Noindex, follow - linked pages not showing
-
We have a blog on our site where the homepage and category pages have "noindex, follow" but the articles have "index, follow".
Recently we have noticed that the article pages are no longer showing in the Google SERPs (but they are in Bing!) - this was done by using the "site:" search operator.
Have double-checked our robots.txt file too just in case something silly had slipped in, but that's as it should be...
Has anyone else noticed similar behaviour or could suggest things I could check?
Thanks!

Well you're on Wordpress and are using YoastSEO. When a Wordpress category is created, a URL is generated for that category.
Your sitemap was created with Yoast:

I can see your articles are indexed now, but I would still recommend removing the Wordpress category URL's from your sitemap. Since the sitemap is commonly used for the things you want Google to crawl and index, I would add the article urls and content with "index, follow" webpages directly to your xml sitemap instead of linking the category pages you don't want indexed.
(IE: ie: http://www.genetex.com/sitemap.xml)
Yoast should give you this option in the settings for xml sitemap generation. If not, I would recommend using Screaming Frog to generate the sitemap.

Just as an update to this question, I submitted XML sitemaps directly to the blog articles and those pages are still not showing in the Google SERPs. It seems that new pages are discovered quite quickly (as per Google Alerts) but are then dropped from the index within a day or so.
The only pages which are returned consistently are links to the page which allows comments to be added.
The links which were initially identified as broken, were not actually broken so there was nothing to fix there.
Next step I can think of is to attempt some page sculpting by setting a noindex on the comments pages...
If anyone has any more thoughts or ideas, I'd appreciate your input

Great - thanks for your help

I resubmitted the sitemap for the blog in GWT and no errors were found...
I have to say I am v surprised at the number of dead links - we don't have that many blog posts so unless this is indicating content on our main site (where the pages are still . Even then, as I mentioned to Alan, the only missing content Google Webmaster Tools picks up on is where event tracking is used and it thinks the label is a link.... I did ask Google about these erroneous missing page and they said there was nothing that can be done to indicate they're not meant to be pages and that it would not affect the site's quality.
BTW, An article we published a few hours ago is now showing up in the Google results so it does seem like the rest of the pages have been penalised
Time to figure out what's going on with the missing pages...
Thanks, Irving

i sent the list, i had a bit of a look and it may be that they were timing out

Thanks Alan, have DM'ed you.

Submit a sitemap.xml file for these pages you want indexed, If they are linked to on the site and not blocked in robots.txt they will get indexed again. Definitely fix that sick amount of broken links, Google could be determining that these pages are not worth anything because the links on them are all dead ends.
-
The broken links were found using the Bing api. so bing will see them as such,
If yougive me a email, i willl send you the list
-
39 no-index pages on the blog could be correct with the category pages.
I'm quite surprised at the number of broken links - is this specific to /blog and are they actual links? GWT usually picks up event tracking as broken links...
Good point about the homepage - I should get a canonical tag on that...
Thanks!
-
I found 39 pages that have been no-index, does that add up?
I also found 33,000 broken links.
anouther problem you have is that both http://www.abcam.com/blog/ and http://www.abcam.com/blog/index.cfm are linked to in your site, this means that the pagerank is split. you should link to only http://www.abcam.com/blog/
-
The blog homepage is http://www.abcam.com/blog
@Alan: The rest of the site is indexable, just the the blog area where noindex has been used (the blog homepage and category pages are auto-generated and repeat a lot of the content in the articles)
@Shailendra: Yes, they were indexed - the last Google Alert which specifically highlights content from the blog is mid-June.
-
Firstly, you don't need to write index, follow on normal pages. Secondly, as you say, "no longer showing in Google SERPs", this means that it was earlier indexed, right? Now if it is no longer in Google's index, it means penalization. Please give the url of your website.
-
It may have something to do with the homepage being noindex, as that is unusual.
Can we get a url, I may find what you missed?

Can I redirect a link even if the link is still on the site
Hi Folks, I've got a client who has a duplicate content because they actually create duplicate content and store the same piece of content in 2 different places. When they generate this duplicate content, it creates a 2nd link on the site going to the duplicate content. Now they want the 2nd link to always redirect to the first link, but for architecture reasons, they can't remove the 2nd link from the site navigation. We can't use rel-canonical because they don't want visitors going to that 2nd page. Here is my question: Are there any adverse SEO implications to maintaining a link on a site that always redirects to a different page? I've already gone down the road of "don't deliberately create duplicate content" with the client. They've heard me, but won't change. So, what are your thoughts? Thanks!

Why are these internal pages not showing any internal links?
If you look at Author profile pages like this one, http://experts.allbusiness.com/author/denise-oberry (THE top contributor on the site with over 82 posts under her belt), or any Author profile page, they show zero internal links or Page Authority. The same goes for most posts for each author on the site. Author pages should show internal links from every post the author has on the site. And specific posts should also have internal links from categories, etc. Yet they show zero. The only posts that show internal links and PA are ones that were either syndicated to the root domain's homepage, or syndicated to Fox Small Business. ZERO internal links. Does anyone know why this is? The root domain does not act this way with Author pages and posts. And I see nothing blocking links or indexing via the robots.txt file or page level nofollow tags. A real head scratcher for this SEO nerd, that I'm sure someone here will have a really simple answer to.

Can Google show the hReview-Aggregate microformat in the SERPs on a product page if the reviews themselves are on a separate page?
Hi, We recently changed our eCommerce site structure a bit and separated our product reviews onto a a different page. There were a couple of reasons we did this : We used pagination on the product page which meant we got duplicate content warnings. We didn't want to show all the reviews on the product page because this was bad for UX (and diluted our keywords). We thought having a single page was better than paginated content, or at least safer for indexing. We found that Googlebot quite often got stuck in loops and we didn't want to bury the reviews way down in the site structure. We wanted to reduce our bounce rate a little, so having a different reviews page could help with this. In the process of doing this we tidied up our microformats a bit too. The product page used to have to three main microformats; hProduct hReview-Aggregate hReview The product page now only has hProduct and hReview-Aggregate (which is now nested inside the hProduct). This means the reviews page has hReview-Aggregate and hReviews for each review itself. We've taken care to make sure that we're specifying that it's a product review and the URL of that product. However, we've noticed over the past few weeks that Google has stopped feeding the reviews into the SERPs for product pages, and is instead only feeding them in for the reviews pages. Is there any way to separate the reviews out and get Google to use the Microformats for both pages? Would using microdata be a better way to implement this? Thanks,

Splitting Page Authority with two URLs for the same page.
Hello guys, My website is currently holding two different URLs for the same page and I am under the impression such set up is dividing my Page Authority and Link Juice. We currently have the following page with both URLs below: www.wbresearch.com/soldiertechnologyusa/home.aspx
Technical SEO | | JoaoPdaCosta-WBR
www.wbresearch.com/soldiertechnologyusa/ Analysing the page authority and backlinks I identified that we are splitting the amount of backlinks (links from sites, social media and therefore authority). "/home.aspx"
PA: 67
Linking Root Domains: 52
Total Links: 272 "/"
PA: 64
Linking Root Domains: 29
Total Links: 128 I am under the impression that if the URLs were the same we would maximise our backlinks and therefore page authority. My Question: How can I fix this? Should I have a 301 redirect from the page "/" to the "/home.aspx" therefore passing the authority and link juice of “/” directly to “/homes.aspx”? Trying to gather thoughts and ideas on this, suggestions are much appreciated? Thanks!0 -
Is it better to delete web pages that I don't want anymore or should I 301 redirect all of the pages I delete to the homepage or another live page?

IFRAME WIDGET - FOLLOWED LINKS
<iframe style="border: 2px #CCCCCC solid;" src="http://www.cpsc.gov/cgi-bin/javascripts/cpscrss.aspx" title="CPSC RSS Feed" frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" width="224" height="258"></iframe> That is the code my client wants to add to an internal page where we can keep updated news on a specific subject. Only problem is this widget has links within it, these links are "followed". Should i worry about these links being followed? There are quite a few, does anyone know if they will be counted if within an iframe or is there a way to add "no-follow" attribute to them. Can i somehow tell the HTACCESS to add no follows to all links on specific pages? Any thoughts, solutions are greatly appreciated.

If two links from one page link to another, how can I get the second link's anchor text to count?
I am working on an e-commerce site and on the category pages each of the product listings link to the product page twice. The first is an image link and then the second is the product name. I want to get the anchor text of the second link to count. If I no-follow the image link will that help at all? If not is there a way to do this?
