What do you think of our new category page?
-
Hey Mozzers!
We have come up with a new layout design for a category page and would love to have your opinion on it, specifically from an S_E_O perspective
-
Here is our current page: http://www.builddirect.com/Laminate-Flooring.aspx
-
Our new page (pending approval): http://www.builddirect.com/testing/laminate-flooring/index.html
Just to brief you in on the key differences b/w old and new layout:
Left text link menu is removed in new layout
New layout looks funny with JS disabled - long vertical line up of products(Perhaps important keywords/ content in new layout appears way down?)
Lot of 'clunk' has been removed (bits of text, links, images, etc)Thanks for checking this out.

i don't know, i seem to think more then one image is too much in one go. An image catches the eye, but a gallary bores them, one image and some easy to read suporting text getting your basic message accross.
Only when they are interested will more content be of use.
Thats my opinion

Thanks Alan - we are doing this as of now. I suspect it will come at a cost of conversions/ user experience. We probably we need a lot more testing and several pages to get the right balance and decide on one.

i would get some text above the fold,

Hey there,
The new version looks great! The larger images definitely do more justice with selling products, not to mention adding a clearer level of text hierarchy. Also the green call to actions, in the newer version, have way more prominence than the older yellow ones. As for SEO, I do favor the older title tag versus the newer one. I understand the older title tag is a bit board of a keyword however it makes sense seeing how you target specific keywords on the individual product pages. Also, the newer one seems to have just way too many characters and may over optimized. Lastly, be more concise with adding branding at the end of the title tag. For instance the newer home page has the company name at the end (which is awesome cause it increases brand awareness), but it doesn't seem to appear on the individual products page, which also has a potential to rank in search engines. Hope that helps!

We do use optimizely, which I believe is pretty similar to Google Optimizer. Both are JS based but from what I understand optimizely is a bit simpler to work on. Thanks for the input!
-
I'll take a stab. I like the big and more varied imagery of the new page.
I will say that opinions don't really get you all the way there. I would suggest (maybe you already are) testing the new paging for improved conversion, or other KPIs using Google Website Optimizer (free), or Visual Website Optimizer (my favorite and pretty cheap). I love to prove my own opinions wrong through testing!
- All elements of the headers on the old vs. new pages appear to have different pixel heights
- I found it hard to tell that there were products to choose from because the items that are in this category appear below the fold. I would consider doing something to the page (possibly moving the products higher?) to make it dead simple that there are products below that people need to be browsing through. Check out the Google browser size tool below for help on the lowest pixel to show the important stuff on your page
Those were a few things I noticed right away. I'm sure others will chime in as well.

G.A. question - removing a specific page's data from total site's results?
I hope I can explain this clearly, hang in there! One of the clients of the law firm I work for does some SEO work for the firm and one thing he has been doing is googling a certain keyword over and over again to trick google's auto fill into using that keyword. When he runs his program he generates around 500 hits to one of our attorney's bio pages. This happens once or twice a week, and since I don't consider them real organic traffic it has been really messing up my GA reports. Is there a way to block that landing page from my overall reports? Or is there a better way to deal with the skewed data? Any help or advice is appreciated, I am still so new to SEO I feel like a lot of my questions are obvious, but please go easy on me!

Should we remove our "index" pages (alphabetical link list to all of the products on the site)?
We run an e-commerce site with a large number of product families, with each family having a number of products within it. We have a set of pages (26 - one for each letter A-Z) that are lists of links to the product family pages. We originally created these pages thinking it would aid in discoverability of these pages to search engines, of course as time has gone on, techniques like this have fallen out of favor with Google as it provides negligible value to the user. Should we consider removing these pages from the site overall? Is it possible that it could be viewed by Panda as resembling a link farm? Thanks in advance!

Schema for Landing Pages
Hi guys, I do a lot of landing pages for cars and would like to know what the best practices are for some things in Schema, so I can enhance their web presence. I would like to make some bullet points of the features of the vehicles show up in Google search results. What would be the best way to make this happen with Schema? Also, can I use coordinates in the code to make the landing page show up on a search result saying "2014 Volkswagen Beetle near me," rather than "2014 Volkswagen Beetle near Clarence, NY?" Can I make an image of the brand or car show up in the search results along with the meta description (kind of what bloggers do). Thanks!

Footer links VS Page links - Which one is best?
Hello all 🙂 I was wondering if someone could advise me on a link building question. If you wish to create a couple of landing pages for different locations with anchor text link building etc is it better to have a page like this web site here: http://www.acorncommercial.co.uk/commercial-property/development-sites/ or quick footer links like this web site here?: http://www.robertholmes.co.uk/ (click on quick links at the bottom). I would like to know if there is a difference from an SEO perspective or if they are considered black hat. Your advise would be much appreciated! Yiannis

Is there any value in "starting from scratch" on a new domain?
Hi, Our ecommerce store - we have had some duplicate content issues and they have been corrected, but of course, Google takes time to pick up on these. Our link profile is very poor, so we wont lose a lot by going to a new domain in that sense. My question is, in what instances is it worthwhile starting under a new domain? And in which not? Presumably you can also 301 the whole site - when is it worth doing this or not? Thanks, Ben

Page 1 Ranking - Disappeared!
Hi All We launched our client's website http://rollerbannerscheap.co.uk in January this year. We have been building links making sure we are not over optmising anchor text and only following ethical SEO tactics. Our client's site eventually hit page 1 for it's main key word 'Roller Banner' 1 week ago, the site received impressions/clicks from the SERPS and has started to gain traffic from that particular keyword. I have checked today, and I cannot our client's website URL within the first 10 pages of Google, nevermind on page 1. Our client is currently undercutting competitiors on price, which we stated (the price) in the meta tag. Is it possible other SEOs could de-rank our website? If not, what would be a likely explaination for this occurance? Would just like to add, I recently build a link with anchor text 'Roller Banner Website, but one of my older links uses anchor text 'Roller Banners Cheap Website' - They're not exact match, but could this affect our ranking? Awaiting help Lewis

Landing Page or Doorway ?- that is the question!
Hi Guys, So, I'm looking at a project to build a series of landing pages that cross map cities with Suname. E.g. Sydney + Smyth, New York + Fitzpatrick. On those pages I'll pull in from our directory relevant name based listings and try and display some other tailored / information. The page itself is the end goal - it is definitely not a doorway in the classic sense of encouraging someone to then go on the main site. I want the user to fill out a form on this page because they realise they've landed on a valuable service. I'm looking at potentially 500 names against 2000 locations, creating 1,000,000 landing pages. Although some of the content will be repetitive I genuinely believe someone doing the appropriate search and finding our page will derive value from our page as our whole business is designed to answer their needs. However I'm worried that Google may classify these pages as doorway pages. Could anyone please shine the light of experience on this for me? Thanks!

New website :301 redirection of a established domain
Hello , I am launching a new website which would host user generated content . Based on my brandname i have purchased a new domain . In order to improve SEO rankings i was considering to purchase a good quality domain (have gr8 link backs) and then perform 301 redirection of the domain to the new brandname.co.in domain . Does this work ? Is there any harm in doing this ? . Does the Link juice pass naturally ? Warm Rgd
