My site was a PR 5 and now is unranked?
-
A site that I do SEO and SMM (www.corporatecomplianceinsights.com) had a PR 5 and now it shows "unranked".
I had the #1 position for many core keywords, and now they are all gone.
I don't do any black hat at all. Mostly article distribution and onsite content growth.
The only logical thing that I can think of is, the server was going down several times a day, for about 3 days, a few weeks ago. But I can imagine that would cause me to lose all my rankings, and a PR 5. But then again, this has never happened to me before.
I am trying to find out what caused this, how to fix the problem, and how long it will take to recover.
Any suggestions or help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
I am willing to pay for good advice on this issue if need be.

Hi JT. Here's how I found the nastiness. I looked at your url on Open Site Explorer and clicked on "Anchor Text". This shows you how your site is linked to. The 6th most popular anchor text was "buy cheap viagra online" and the seventh was "buy cheap software". I expanded the first one and saw the urls linking to you and clicked on one.
Then, when I was on that page, I did a CTRL-F to search for your site. I also searched for the words "buy cheap viagra online". My CTRL-F told me that the words did exist on the page but I couldn't find them. So, I did a view source. (I'm using chrome, so I just right clicked and chose view source.) I can't remember exactly what the issue was but I believe they were positioning the words so that they are off of the screen.
As far as removal goes, it may be a good idea to start a new question on this one. Perhaps title it, "My site has 'buy viagra' links pointing at it that I didn't create! How do I get them removed?"
I have never had to deal with such an issue so I'm not sure how you would do it. You can certainly try to find contact info for the URL but I'm doubtful that they're going to talk to you. I do believe that you can file an reinclusion request with Google and explain the situation and they may listen. But I'd want to get more advice on that before I did it.
Also, set up your webmaster tools now! You may not get a message, but I have heard of sites that set up WMT and 1-2 days later the unnatural links warning pops up. At least then, you'll know what you're dealing with.
Good luck!

Nakul,
Thanks for the reply! No errors, or major changes lately. I wish that was the problem!
Many Thanks
-
William,
Thanks for the reply!
Yeah! I've lost ranking before that quickly bounced back in 3-4 weeks, but never something like this.
I had about 8 #1 rankings and they are all gone.

Marie,
Thanks you so much for your answer. I had no idea those nasty links were there. I took the SEO and SMM over on this site last November, and there were a lot of that stuff. I thought I had gotten rid of it all.
Do you mind me asking what tool you used to find them?
Your explanation seems the plausible. But I have never had a Google penalty, and unfortunately I have not used WMT. So I did not receive any messages. That mistake will be corrected immediately.
Any advise on how to handle the penalties? Procedures? - Time-frames?
Thanks again,
JT

Do you have any messages in your WMT?
You've got a lot of unnatural looking stuff in your backlink profile including a large amount of anchor texted links.
Were you aware that you have links pointing back at your site with the anchor text of "buy cheap viagra online" and "buy cheap software"? I checked out one of those backlinks and they're linking to your home page. The link (on http://archive.d3sports.com/dailydose/) is a hidden one.
I would venture a guess that you've got some penalties going on.
If you didn't place those links, then you may need some professional advice on how to get rid of them. Hopefully some of the more seasoned pros will chime in for you.

It looks like your homepage is not cached in Google. A lot of the category pages I checked were not cached as well. However your article/post pages are cached. Did you install any new wordpress plugin lately that might have messed up ? It does not look like related to your server being down. Do you see any errors/warning in the Webmaster Console ? I would suggest you install a XML sitemap Plugin, Generate the Sitemap and submit it via the Webmaster Console unless you are already doing so.

Give it some time, this happens sometimes in my experience.
It is unlikely that the down time will cause PR problems because PR isn't updated frequently. So give it a few days and try different PR checkers.
Also on another note, if your traffic and organic traffic hasn't changed, there shouldn't be too much worry.

How to proceed? Older ecommerce site, unnatural link warning 2013, disavow, now what?
Hello all, I have a small, older ecommerce site. It has been around since 2002. It ranked very well until a few years ago. It currently does rank for some terms, but not many. (I am trying to say that it is not completely off the map.) Our domain authority is 36. Our Spam Score in Open Site Explorer is a 2/10. We received a notice in GWT in May 2013 re: unnatural links. That notice has since cleared from our account. I assume that it has expired. We were working with an SEO consultant when we received the notice from Google in 2013. He started working on cleaning up our link profile at that point. He submitted a disavowal file to Google with all of the domains that he was not able to get cleaned up manually. He kept working and updated the file again in June 2014. He told me that we did not have to file a reconsideration request. He did find that an SEO company that I hired in the past had gotten me a lot of spammy links. We got these taken down. There are still some spammy links that seem to keep cropping up. I have started going through Open Site Explorer to again contact some of these spammy sites to ask them to take our links down. Of course, the emails immediately bounce back to me. I am documenting everything. I feel like I am in a hole and can't dig out. What am a doing wrong? Should I disavow again? Should we have filed a reconsideration request a year or two ago? At this point, is it too late to do so as the penalty no longer shows up in my GWT account? How should I proceed? I prefer not to post my URL, but I would be happy to PM it to anyone who can offer advice. Thanks in advance. Melissa

SEO question regarding rails app on www.site.com hosted on Heroku and www.site.com/blog at another host
Hi, I have a rails app hosted on Heroku (www.site.com) and would much prefer to set up a Wordpress blog using a different host pointing to www.site.com/blog, as opposed to using a gem within the actual app. Whats are peoples thoughts regarding there being any ranking implications for implementing the set up as noted in this post on Stackoverflow: "What I would do is serve your Wordpress blog along side your Rails app (so you've got a PHP and a Rails server running), and just have your /blog route point to a controller that redirects to your Wordpress app. Add something like this to your routes.rb: _`get '/blog', to:'blog#redirect'`_ and then have a redirect method in your BlogController that simply does this: _`classBlogController<applicationcontrollerdef redirect="" redirect_to="" "url_of_wordpress_blog"endend<="" code=""></applicationcontrollerdef>`_ _Now you can point at yourdomain.com/blog and it will take you to the Wordpress site._

Multiple Ecommerce sites, same products
We are a large catalog company with thousands of products across 2 different domains. Google clearly knows that the sites are connected. Both domains are fairly well known brands - thousands of branded searches for each site per month. Roughly half of our products overlap - they appear on both sites. We have a known duplicate content issue - both sites having exactly the same product descriptions, and we are working on it. We've seen that when a product has different content on the 2 sites, frequently, both pages get to page 2 of the SERPs, but that's as far as it goes, despite aggressive white hat link building tactics. 1. Is it possible to get the same product pages on page 1 of the SERPs for both sites? (I think I know the answer...) 2. Should we be canonicalizing (is that a word?) products across the sites? This would get tricky - both sites have roughly the same domain authority, but in different niches. Certain products and keywords naturally rank better on 1 site or the other depending on the niche.

Noindex Mobile Site?
So I wanted to get everyone's opinion. Have a client in online retail on ASP and their developers built a mobile site a while back before we took the client on. For the sake of this post, just assume, resources are limited anddevelopers are not good (constantly break things we request to get fixed). They never installed analytics on the mobile site, so all I have to go off of is referral data on the main stores GA account for m.example.com However if I look to see what is indexed by doing site:m.example.com am not seeing many pages. The mobile site has a ton of internal links in GWT and am questioning its negative impact as there are no canonicals, no mobile sitemap present. In the ideal world, I would implement proper Mobile SEO practices but given the resources of no dev budget and devs not being good, I was thinking about noindexing the mobile site since I can RDP into the site and access robots. Thoughts?

How to decide on which site to 301 redirect
Hi there I'd like your opinions please! My client currently has their website at not-very-good-url.it which has a really good link profile they also have duplicate sites at: much-better-brand-name-url.it and much-better-brand-name-url.com but both these other sites have only a handful of links in. How important do you think a better brand url is? And therefore do you think it would be better to 301 to a better brand URL and take the risk that the link profile will get hit? Or leave the main site where it is and 301 the other two to it? Many thanks
