Is it a good idea to use sub-domains?
-
Hello everyone!
I have a question about whether we should be using sub-domains. We are currently in the process of redesigning our site so this would be the time to do it. We are a reseller of brand name IT equipment (servers, storage, etc...) should we create a sub-domain for each brand for example:
or should we just use folders instead like:
does one have any more SEO value than the other?
Thank you!

In terms of SEO, subfolders are almost always the better option. If your brand pages are in a subfolder, they will receive more of a boost in rankings because they are considered part of the main site by search engines. More of the link authority and trust will be passed to pages in a subfolder. Subdomains are considered as a separate site by search engines - for example the blogs like sitename.blogspot.com or sitename.wordpress.com and receive little trust and authority from the rest of the site.

301 redirect is a permanent redirection. If you set up a 301 redirect and a search engine requests the page, the search engine is sent a reply that says the page has permanently moved to a different location. So Google will consider the new page as the one to be indexed. Google will also transfer the value of any links to hp.domain.com to www.domain.com/hp.
In most situations, I believe it is best to optimize one domain than several. Search engines will consider a subdomain as a complete separate domain. And yes www.domain.com are considered two different domain names (although I suspect Google tries to sort that one out). Using the 301 redirects to the folder transfers the value of the links of the sub domain to the file in the folder, which is also a link in to a place on the domain www.domain.com.
Search how to do redirects, there are many tutorials for different platforms. It is not difficult. However if you are using one of those free hosting sites, you are not going to have any luck.

Hello Christopher,
Thanks for a quick reply! I'm a newbie to SEO so if you don't mind I'd like to pick your brain about 301 redirects ( I will have to research this subject in more detail). However from what I understand:
Create a subdomain hp.domain.com and do a 301 redirect to www.domain.com/hp
Now my question is this, so my content for hp.domain.com technically resides on www.domain.com/hp correct? or it resides on hp.domain.com ?
Question #2, why would I want or why is it recommended to do a 301 redirect on a subdomain to a folder on a main/root domain?
Thanks!

I like subdomains for usability, but maintain 301 redirects to folders. Humans may prefer the subdomain, so they are useful.
hp.domain.com has a 301 redirect to www.domain.com/hp
Search engines will consider hp.domain.com a different domain than www.domain.com.
I do this most commonly for mobile.
m.domain.com has a 301 redirect to www.domain.com/m

Page missing meta description some times a good thing?
Just courious to why http://moz.com/learn/seo does not appear to have the meta tag: name="description" content=""> Is this purposely done this way for some reason? Or has it become less important? Just curious.

Nofollow links to resources used to save bandwidth?
I have a site on volusion, www.ecowindchimes.com. Until recently I was doing fairly well (top 3 for keyword(s) for 6 years) in serps. I was hit by the an update around july of last year, and did a full page redesign in november. My site has been losing ranking for its main keyword "wind chimes".

One change I noticed is that no-follow was removed (when the designers added a lightbox popup for the sound) from the many many links I have for my sound files of the wind chimes (I house them on a separate server to save bandwidth, which is expensive at volusion). The webaddress the sound-files are on doesn't even have a page... it is just there for the files. (there are ~100 files linked to on almost every page of the site where a product listing shows). Should I go through and no-follow all of these links again? Is that hurting me?
I suspect it is, but it is a lot of work for nothing if that is not the problem.0 -

Domain Analysis
Hi all, Thanks for taking time to view my first question. I've noticed quite a change in our domain analysis figures in the last month (we have dropped two points whilst a competitor has jumped up 7 points for domain authority) and wondered if this was unusual or not as I've only been a member for a couple of months and it seems to quite a leap for them!? Cubicle Centre Ltd (washroomcubicles.co.uk) from 35 to 33 and Venesta (venesta.co.uk) from 27 to 34 The main changes I can see are that our number of links for External Followed (EFL) / Total External (TEL) and Total Links (TL) has dropped considerably whilst their's have remained fairly constant: EFL from 439 to 242 TEL from 466 to 263 TL from 3686 to 2980 We have managed to hold a top three spot in Google for the search term 'toilet cubicles' (UK!) for quite a number of years now and I am concerned these figures may be the start of a fall / reduction in our search engine performance. If anybody could give me some feedback or maybe even take a peep at our website (http://www.washroomcubicles.co.uk/) and see if there are any major SEO issues which I need to address to improve on the stats above, it would be very much appreciated. Remember this is my first question so please go easy on me! Thanks in advance.

I need to buy a website template - anyone knows a good place to buy it? where you should buy one template?
I used the www.templatemonster.com or http://themeforest.net/, but is difficult to find a template with a focus on SEO. Also with the necessity to include text in the beginning of the website, is difficulty to found something really good.

Optimal redirect configuration from a misspelled domain that we own.
We have a handful of inbound links to www.t-chek.com (note the hyphen). Our normal site is www.tchek.com (no hyphen). We own both domains and have some sort of domain-wide redirect set up now. This works fine for traffic, but I suspect it's not optimal for SEO purposes. I came to this conclusion by looking in OSE and noticing that none of the inbound links to www.t-chek.com were also being attributed to www.tchek.com. 2 questions: Is it immediately evident what type of redirect I have in place now, or do I need to figure that out? Is the fix as simple as editing the .htaccess file on the hyphenated domain? I don't have direct control over the hyphenated domain, and I'd like to be able to know exactly what we need to do so I can request help from my IT department. I'd appreciate hearing your wisdom. Thanks!

Does using Wordpress Multisite have any negative SEO impact?
I manage multiple websites in Wordpress and the idea of managing them all under one Wordpress install is very attractive. Are there any dangers SEO-wise to doing so? I know that all of the sites would live under the same IP address, but that's not something I'm really concerned with anyway because I don't do a lot of inter-linking between the sites. Thanks for your help! -El Juano
