Holy Redirects

Currently working on a project for a medium sized site (http://sleeponcall.com/) but the SEOMoz crawl crawled over 14,000 pages because the report is showing more than 8,000 redirects.
The client has no clue how this happened as their previous web programmers may not have been on the ball.
What could be causing the problem and what is the best way to untangle this mess?

If you check through Everett Sizemore's pro webinar about E-comerce SEO, he covers the correct way to set up of Megneto for ecommerce, from memory he also offers some additional resources you can check out. i think its around 45 mins in.

Did you have a look at the file I made for you? Hope so, took me 20 minutes to compile and all
As William said, look for 301 or 302 mentioned in the .htaccess file, if those are mentioned there, that's a sign that things are being redirected.
A rebuild is always useful, but of course, the budget probably isn't there and I can respect that.
Let us know about the .htaccess file..

If you have the resources I suggest rebuilding it under Magento again. Might be well worth the time if you have a lot of problems with the previous design.
-
I agree the way the entire site is setup is strange. Still trying to get answers from the original site builders as to what they did and why.
-
Look for the numbers 301,302 redirects.
i.e. [r=301,nc] and something along those lines. Look for the culprit that way and remove it.
I thought Magento was up to date on these problems, are you running the latest? I find it odd that everything is within the sub /index.php/'category'.

Thanks for the help, the site is in fact run on Magento.
I'll have the programmer check the redirect code in the .htacess file, is there anything specific I should be looking for in the Magento setup?
-
Hi Carl,
I immediately fired up Xenu and did a test, there's an option to set redirects as errors, to locate the redirects. Here's is the downloadable export: http://www.imoddigital.com/sleeponcall/sleeponcall.xlsx
When you look at the file in Excel, the redirect pages won't appear as 200, they'll either be 301 or 302, this will allow you to isolate the troublesome pages.
Please do check your .htaccess file like Justin has suggested, that would have been my very first point of call.
Hope that helps!

Its sounds like pages are on a redirect loop....
Run a scrawl using link sleuth and identify the URL's that are redirecting and you can take it from there.
Perhaps do the scan, and then report back with an example of why they are redirecting and we can be of better assistance.

My guess would be that at some point the url structure of the site has been changed and have 301'd from the old url structure to the new one.
Have you checked the .htaccess file on the server to see if there are any redirect code in there?
Another possibility is the platform could be causing it. What platform is the site created in? If it is an off the shelf e-com system then configs can cause these kind of issues, I believe magento is a culprit of this if its not set up correctly.

My homepage redirects to itself?
Hi there - I'm not a SEO so help would be appreciated! Moz is telling me we have a redirect loop but the URLs are the same. https://www.example.com/ to https://www.example.com/ Why is my homepage creating a redirect loop to itself? We use Wordpress and I do not have any redirects listed for our homepage. Could this have something to do with switching to https in April? Thanks, Katherine

Redirect Question
We have a client that just did a redesign and development and the new design didn't really match their current structure. They said they didn't want to worry about matching site structure and never put any effort into SEO. Here is the situation: They had a blog located on a subdomain such as blog.domain.com - now there blog is located like domain.com/blog They want to create redirects for all the old the blog urls that used to be on the subdomain and not point to the domain.com/blog/post-name What is the best way of doing that - Through .htaccess?

Redirect 301 /armaflex.html http://www.just-insulation.com/002-brands/armaflex.html
Returns this response in the URL bar of ...
http://www.just-insulation.com/002-brands/armaflex.html?file=armaflex
I am at a loss to understand why the suffix "?file=armaflex" is added The following code is inserted at the top of the file ...

Using 302 redirect for SEO
Hello, I'm in charge of SEO for an information website on which articles are only accessible if you have a login and password. Most of the natural links we get point to our subscribers' subomain : subscribers.mywebsite.com/article1 If they follow these natural links, visitors who are not logged get redirected (302) to www.mywebsite.com/article1 on which there is an extract of the article and they can request a free test subscription to read the end of the article. My goal is to optimize SEO for the www.mywebsite.com/article1 page. Does this page benefit from the links I get to the subscribers.mywebsite.com/article1 page or are theses links lost in terms of SEO? Thanks for your help, Sylvain

What to do with 302 redirects being indexed
Hi there, Our site's forums include permalinks that for some reason uses an intermediary URL that 302 redirects to the URL with the permalink anchor. For example: http://en.tradimo.com/learn/chart-analysis/time-frames/ In the comments, there is a permalink to the following URL; en.tradimo.com/co/50c450005f2b949e3200001b/ (there is no content here, and never has been). This URL 302 redirects to the following final URL: http://en.tradimo.com/learn/chart-analysis/time-frames/?offset=0&limit=20#50c450005f2b949e3200001b The problem is, Google is indexing the redirect URL (en.tradimo.com/co/50c450005f2b949e3200001b/) and showing duplicate content even though we are using the nofollow tag on these links. Ideally, we would directly use the last link rather than redirecting. Alternatively, I'd say a 301 redirect would be preferable. But if both aren't available, is there a way to get these pages out of the index? Is the canonical tag the best way? I really wish I could just add /co/ to the robots.txt file, but I think they would still be in the index, right? Thanks for your help!

301 redirect
We have just had an outside SEO agency report on our site: One of things brought up were arounf broken links, and how they class them as broken links. Could any body tell me whether this statement holds true please, as I am not aware of this "Our latest intelligence shows that google are downgrading ranking from sites that feature 301 redirects within the internal link structure". Any help would be greatly appreciated Regards
