Penalized by google. How to find out?
-
Our webpage performs very bad on some keywords relating to one product.
At the SeoMoz-ranking page i can se we are number 9
- but we have the highest (higher than our competitors) rating in almost every category (at least 25 of 30) on the keyword difficulty report.
How do i find out why this is so, or if we have been penalized by google? On other search-engines (yahoo, bing etc) we are number one! And we have the highest pagerank among the competitors...

Hi Robert
Yes, language is kind of a barrier in this case
And yes #2 are doing very well. They have a lot of content. And content is king. But we have our brand name and travelling is not just travelling (guides, quality, transfer, flights) - so i think many users read their content, but order a package in other companies, like us. They are focused on the DIY-group of travellers.
Danish is actually such a small language that only 5 million people are fluent. Its amazing we can keep up the company running with a danish website ...
I just found another funny thing about this "rejser til gran canaria" keyword. On SeoMoz's ranking report i clearly show as "rank 1" on Google and "rank 2" on Bing and Yahoo. So SeoMoz actually read the data that is provided as we should be number 1 on that particular searchphrase ...
Under the help-section SeoMoz writes that the ranking shown on page can be different from what i experience using google due to personalization. But even when i'm logged out from google and have flushed my cache i end up #9 on google. SeoMoz suggest adding the "&pws=0" to the google url to prevent any personalization. But that doesn't help either. So something is not rigth!
Regards, Alsvik
Oh - and sorry for the name switch. My name is Alsvik. The old name reffered to the creator of the account.

Rasmus,
A couple of things and you will have to understand that I speak English and some passable Spanish...no Danish.I think the Holiday meta description may be a bit of an issue...May.
I look at the #2 and they have worked on gettiing site links, etc. And they have a nice site. You might want to look at what they are doing.
Other than that, it is difficult as I know to be careful with anything that is mechanically translated.
Hope it is at least a bit helpful. -
Hi Robert
I see your point, but fact is that we lost 6 positions since august 2011. In january we noticed that google showed wrong title and description on the searchresultpage. It seemed that Google had created its own metadata for our page. We updated and 4-5 weeks later google was showing our title and description correctly again.
So i dont feel that our competitors "was speeding in the fast lane: I rather feel kinda like we lost it due to some crazy thing with google ...
But off course, our focus is not to have google fix it.
We will fix this by work, work and then some
www.spies.dk
Keyword (just one out of many) "rejser til gran canaria"Thanks

Rasmus,
First and foremost, if you are penalized by Google I doubt you will be ranking 9 on page one. So the next question is what is going to move you up? Not, how are your competitors ranking above you. The reason is that question is a trap that focuses your attention on the "inequities of ranking" instead of on what you need to do.
Whenever you have a question like this, we need either more data or the url and keyword you are speaking of if at all possible. Now, without it, if you are first on Bing and Yahoo, you are likely paying attention to them as being one third of all search (US) and many who have sites focus only on Google. So, good job.
For your number 9 ranking, look at a few things: Is your on site better than your competitors? Does your meta description get people to click on your site? When they do click on this page, is the content such that they are not bouncing off.Remember, if they are getting more traffic, even if you are higher PR, they will be able to move ahead of you. Is your content fresh? Etc.
Now, that said, understand there are times that someone comes out of nowhere and seems to climb to the top easily even though they do not have PR, etc. In that case, be calm and watch. Typically, with our clients we watch not where they are today, but over time. Are we moving slowly up the SERPs in a highly competitive arena? If we are already up in the SERP's, are we taking care of business so that we do not fall?
Lastly, if you can provide a keyword and a url, mozzers can provide more for you.

Site removed from Google Index
Hi mozers, Two months ago we published http://aquacion.com We registered it in the Google Webmaster tools and after a few day the website was in the index no problem. But now the webmaster tools tell us the URLs were manually removed. I've look everywhere in the webmaster tools in search for more clues but haven't found anything that would help me. I sent the acces to the client, who might have been stupid enough to remove his own site from the Google index, but now, even though I delete and add the sitemap again, the website won't show in Google SERPs. What's weird is that Google Webmaster Tools tells us all the page are indexed. I'm totally clueless here... Ps. : Added screenshots from Google Webmaster Tools. Update Turns out it was my mistake after all. When my client developped his website a few months ago, he published it, and I removed the website from the Google Index. When the website was finished I submited the sitemap, thinking it would void the removal request, but it don't. How to solve In webmaster tools, in the [Google Index => Remove URLs] page, you can reinclude pages there. tGib0

Pages to be indexed in Google
Hi, We have 70K posts in our site but Google has scanned 500K pages and these extra pages are category pages or User profile pages. Each category has a page and each user has a page. When we have 90K users so Google has indexed 90K pages of users alone. My question is. Should we leave it as they are or should we block them from being indexed? As we get unwanted landings to the pages and huge bounce rate. If we need to remove what needs to be done? Robots block or Noindex/Nofollow Regards

Google Trusted Ranking effect?
We are looking into getting the google Trusted badge. We meet the requirements and now just deciding if it is worth the time to do it now or later. Has anyone noticed a difference in your organic rankings or PLAs with it. What about conversion rates? Any input would be great!

Google Places Question......
Hi Guys. I am working with a photographer they do not have a studio they shoot on location. However I noticed many photographers within their industry have their home address listed in their google places, and they too shoot on location. My client doesn't want their home address listed so I wondered what options there would be? Do you think renting mail forwarding address would suffice?

Is google all over the place tonight?
Is it me or is google all over the place tonight? Whilst checking my rankings I came across a site with a page authority of 29 and 23 links from 5 domains ranking at number 6 for a competitive keyword! This site came from nowhere and I'm getting different results every time I search! Weird....

Google Places phone number question
Hi, A hotel/resort has a main phone number of 1-234-567-8901. This phone number is consistent in over 50 directories. However, they have a spa and restaurant with the same phone number. The front-desk answers the phone and routes the call to either the restaurant or spa. The name of the spa and restaurant are also found in the local listing directories under different DBA's with the same phone number as the Hotel/Resort. For example: ABC Resort - 1-234-567-8901 Spa Cuts - 1-234-567-8901 (same address as ABC Resort) The Spa - 1-234-567-8901 ) same address as ABC Resort) Will this phone number that is used by the 3 separate entities penalize the Google listing placements for the actual Hotel/Resort in Google Places? Thanks everyone!

Google SERPs and NoIndex directives.
We have pages that have been added to robots.txt as url patterns in DisAllow. Also, we have the meta noindex tags on the pages themselves. But we are finding the pages in index. I don't think they are higher up in the rankings and they don't have any descriptions, any previews or any cached pages. Why does Google show these pages? Could it be due to internal or external linking?

How does Google determine freshness of content?
With the changes in the Google algorithm emphasizing freshness of content, I was wondering how they determine freshness and what constitutes new content. For instance, if I write a major update to a story I published last July, is the amended story fresh? Is there anything I can do in addition to publishing brand new content to make Google sure they see all my new content?
