Effort for "moderate competition" keywords

I'm rather new to this, and while I'm getting some sense of everything I'm trying to figure out what kind of scope of work lays ahead of me.
The keywords I'm looking to rank for are "moderate difficulty" -- somewhere between the 45%-55% "difficulty scale" on seomoz's keyword difficulty report.
Assuming I have a number of "A-grade" (according to SEOmoz's reports) optimized pages for these keywords, how many links of a given quality level should I be looking at building up? I mean, of course, the more the better, but if I'm gunning for high DA/PA pages, am I looking at dozens here or hundreds of such links?
I can imagine that any answer isn't going to come with much specificity, but if there was just an "idea" of the scale of backlinking involved here, that'd be great!

You will hear different people say different things, my best advice is to never listen to anyone, except Google. You can't directly ask them questions, but you can look at how they list other sites and then figure out the patterns from there.
In your case if the top 3 sites have Canada in their title, or description I would have it in mine as well.
Also I would do /lsat-courses instead of course because courses has course in it, not the other way around.

Now, in my defense, I wasn't targeting that page for the LSAT courses at all -- I was actually aiming the /live-course pages towards that... ^_^
That's a pretty noticeable find on the URL though -- I figured keywords in URL wouldn't make that much of a difference, but that's definitely something to look into. I'm thinking I'll get started by creating an /lsat-course subdir instead for use, and 301 the live-course pages towards those...
Regarding the meta description -- I was under the impression that these are just for CTR purposes and the the engines don't actually use those?

Hi well if your going for google.ca it would be good to have Canada in your title tag.
After looking at your site I believe you need a whole lot more than back links.
I like to analyze how my competitors are listed in Google, and look for trends.
For example your competitors in Google.ca are:
www.oxfordseminars.ca/LSAT/lsat_dates.php
www.kaptest.com/lsat
www.powerscore.com/lsat/
cstudies.ubc.ca/test-preparation/LSAT.html
www.ivyglobal.ca/lsat/

By the looks of it the trend is to have a page called /lsat I see you have this page harvardready.com/lsat
This is the page I would focus on.
Now you will want to build links to every page including your homepage however,
**I would save some of my best quality links for this page. **

Nope, I agree -- getting that 'A' grade wasn't difficult; just wanted to get it out there that on-page optimization shouldn't be an issue holding me back.
In terms of the context, the keywords I'm looking for are (more or less): "LSAT courses" (or variations thereof, such as "LSAT course"). This is on the google.ca engine.
The site I'm looking to rank is www,harvardready ,com .
Any insight you had would be great!

I don't think there is a magic number of links it will have a lot to do with your content as well, and how you build the links. I have seen one good press release give someone thousands of links over night, and while they received a boost it was not enough to place them on the first page for a "moderate difficulty" keyword.
I have also seen a site with excellent content take a "moderate difficulty" keyword with less than 100 back links.
It is more about the quality of the links, and content than the quantity.
We could possibly help you a little better if we knew at least one of the keywords, and how much back linking you have done in the past (this can be a big factor as well). I doubt it will hurt anything to post one. Also it would help if we had a link to your site. It is not too hard to get an A- grade.

Possible google sandbox issue? Organically ranking page 1 for our number 1 keyword, but page 5 sometimes 6 on google?
What are some things I can look into to figure out why google is ranking us on page 5 sometimes page 6, with some slight rank boosts to rank 36 from 48 but then falls right back. While Yahoo and Bing rank us page 1 consistently, without these big drops back. I use google search ( webmaster tools ) daily, fix 404s and make sure to fetch new content I create. Our site is within the Sandbox issue time frame, google 1st indexed the site about a year and a half ago, the site has been through various SEO service checks, and has had those issues fixed ( some bigcommerce won't allow, such as full sitewide ssl and a few other small factors ) but all the big stuff was handled or will be 100% handled after this redesign is complete. But just still seems we're stuck in the google hole again. We do use adwords, but no clear signs as to why we'd suffer such hardships with google ranking, only thing we don't have optimized in terms of on page optimization from moz is keyword in url, of which will be changing within the next month or two, as we're rolling our a new redesign with SEO 100% at the forefront, nice url paths, with keywords in their url, much more responsive site that uses less resources. But before we release this redesign, I'd like to find out what toe we stubbed of google's to give us such a ranking blackeye... We don't have that many backlinks, and I know these are a huge factor, however, building quality backlinks it's harder than walking on water at time and on the same level as spinning hay into gold. Any ideas community...

Having Trouble Ranking .us for branded Keyword
Hi Mozers, First time poster here. I run the website http://OrangeOctop.us/, it provides winning tips for FIFA, NBA 2K, NHL. The domain authority is 22 but I am unable to rank for the term OrangeOctopus. I know there are dozens of factors that should be assessed when looking at competition in Google (such as backlinks, domain age/relevance, social). However, I feel like you guys might have some suggestions for being able to rank for OrangeOctopus. Thank you! Joey

I must be tripping. How is this site ranking for the term "SEO Company"??????
When I go to Google non-custom search results and search the term: seo company The website "greencowseo.com" is ranked 3rd. OpenSiteSearch shows nothing. And get this... the domain was registered 14 days ago by somebody in Egypt. Do I need to quit my SEO Moz membership and hire this guy? 🙂

Reached No. 1 for my Keyword, what next?
Hi, After months of targeting, promoting etc... I have now reached Google.co.uk rank position 1 for my phrase "creative recreation trainers" and I stand at rank 3 on Google.com. I am happy with these results as this is the phrase I targeted and this is the brand I wanted to rank first for. But were do I go from here? I am thinking I change brand and try work some magic on that, but still continuing to add backlinks etc... to the Creative keyword phrase? What would people advise? Also can anyone do an analysis of any sort on that keyword phrase and/or the url http://www.designerboutique-online.com/all-clothing/creative-recreation/ and tell me some good points, bad points, what to do next and so on? Discrepancy in Competitive Link Analysis?
I currently have a campaign set-up that monitors a few competitors compared to our site. When I look at the Root Domain Metrics I see that Company A has 2,053 total external links, and Company B has 1,632 total external links. I wanted to view these links in more detail so I ran Advanced Inbound Links reports. The reports returned 432 results for Company A and 693 results for Company B. Shouldn't these numbers match up with each other, or am I missing something? Also, I noticed that in the Inbound Links analysis for my competitors there are a number of results listed that are not actually inbound links, but are internal links from there own site. Is there a reason these are appearing? I am having problems because I am trying to use this campaign to show the improvements in our site vs our competitors. However, OSE shows dramatically fewer total external links for our site (about 260 vs 3200 in Webmaster Tools) and I cannot tell if the competitor data is accurate? Thanks

The competitive analysis data I get on my blog heartspm.wordpress.com is Wordpress domain data. That doesn't help me much. I know Wordpress has a lot of domain authority. Can I get comparitive information based solely on heartspm.wordpress.com?

"keyword" - rank the home page or sub page domain.com/keyword?
One of my clients has a pretty decent website that ranks 1st place for most major keywords in their line of business. EXCEPT one keyword that i've been struggling to get 1st position on Google (currently 2nd). My problem is: let's say "tennis shoes" as a keyword the home page of course has several other shoes listed but I've seen that Google took my home page and made it 2nd position (on 1st page). Where the section domain.com/tennis-shoes is on 2nd page of Google. My question is should i rel cannonical from the /tennis-shoes section to the home page so it focuses more on the specific keyword that i need to get the home 1st? Or should i leave the home page generic and focus more on /tennis-shoes to get that 1st position? What do you Moz'ers Think?

How to select appropriate keywords to optimize for SEO?
I have an e-learning website called www.graduatetestprep.com and we provide university students preparation for the GRE examination. This is an entrance exam required for admittance to graduate school across the US. I was wondering what is the best way to find the best keywords focus on to optimize on google and the other search engines.
