Landing Pages

Howdy Guys,
We currently have around 19 landing pages that are near enough identical for each make of car.
The content on each page isn't identical but you can tell its a template.
Do you think we should change this and just target models instead of makes.
Thanks,
Scott

I think this is borderline and the kind of thing Panda hit in some cases. While the pages aren't true duplicates, they do appear a bit thin - they're basically the same content with a few brand-related keywords swapped out. It really comes down to scope, though - if you spun out 100s or 1000s of these, you could really dilute your index and even creep into potential Panda penalty territory.
With about 600 pages in the index, though, and these accounting for only 19 of them, it seems like your risk is pretty low. It would be great to build out the content and make it more unique, but I don't think you're in any immediate danger. You don't want to NOINDEX or block these pages somehow, because I assume you're trying to get some mileage out of the long-tail keywords. My best advice is to try to beef them up and don't spin out too many variants (100+ of these pages with a 600 page site would be dangerous).

Hi Scott,
I'm not an expert on Panda but from what I personally have gathered is most of the sites hit were ones involved in some form or another with link exchanges, or "bad" paid seo services. The paid services usually used some severally black hat tricks to get immediate results, get their money and run. Duplicate content is something to worry about but using a template is not going to cause any problem unless you are dynamically creating content based on every possible keyword, resulting in millions of pages with very little differences.
As far gathering the long tail keywords.. I have used Google Ad Words, keyword suggestion tool. Type in some broad keywords, and let them suggest some keywords play with the filtering settings and see what keywords are the most appropriate for your market that also have the best traffic, then optimize for those.
The keyword suggestion tool is located in Google Ad Words > Tools & Analysis > Keyword Tool
Hope this helps

Great reply Don!
The main reason to ask the question really is for general knowledge.
Our main site was hit pretty hard in the penguin update back in April and we have been removing links and completing overhauling our website to try and get out of the penalty.
We / I was just checking this couldn't be effecting the panda update neither.
We are thinking of targeting the models slightly more though like "bwm 3 series warranty"
How do you fully test long tail keywords...

Hi Scott,
I will comment on the template part first. There is no problem with using a template, most websites do. I looked at your site, the content on each page is different enough not to warrant any concern.
I do wonder why you asked the question other then that, are your worried about Google Ad Ratings, or just keyword optimization or just general seo?
Overall I will just add this, if you're trying to rank in the top SERP's for YMM (Year / Make / Model) you may have trouble because those are hugely contested keywords. And your service really isn't something that "most" people would expect to see when searching for their YMM. However, it is something they may want to see if they search for YMM + warranty or extended warranty. Which is why I would suggest evaluating the long-tail keywords and seeing if I can get those to rank first.
Hope that helps,
Don

Hi again Scott,
I would emphasize more the car´s brand but since there is no need to navigate trough those landings to select your brand, template usage its fine.
Kind regards

When I say they are the same template, here is an example:
Let me know what you think of the above.

Hi Scott:
Does those landing pages have correlations with ecach other? Users should navigate trough one or more of those landing pages to buy the product? If so, i would highly recommend to customize every template to the product in question. If not, there is no problem for using the same template IMO.
Kind regards

Unsolved Should I combine pages?
Hi, Im not sure of the correct route to take here... We are a training provider and I manage the website. The main course offered is the transport manager CPC. Currently, I have a "catch all" landing page which links to each different course option: Landing page > Classroom Online Self study Distance learning The main keyword revolves around "transport manager cpc" I want searchers to land on the online page is they search "online transport manager CPC" for example but I think its confusing Google. I'm wondering if I should de-index the store pages (although some perform very well) and increase the content on the main landing page to rank for every related keyword on that page. Initially, I wanted to devalue the landing page in favor of the store pages but I'm unsure if that's the right way to go. I've stripped out the bulk of the keywords and content and shifted it to each individual page. but as above, Im now unsure if that's the right route to take. Any help would be greatly appreciated 👍 Thanks

Shifting target keyword to a new page, how do we rank the internal page?
I have been targeting one keyword for home page that was ranking between the postilion 6-7 but was never ranking on 1st as there were 2 highly competitive keywords targeted on the same page, I changed the keyword to an internal service page to rank it on 1st, I have optimized the content as well but the home page is still ranking on 11th, how do I get the internal page rank on that keyword

2 Similar Pages
Hello, I have two very similar pages. The first page is an apartment rental page with a map, rental listings and some neighborhood data below. The neighborhood data includes useful info about the area with photos, text about the area, crime rates, avg. rental rates, etc. The second page is a neighbourhood guide that includes virtually the same data as the rental page, but in longer form ie. more photos, more text, etc. I want the rental page to rank, while ranking the neighborhood page is not important as it would be used more for link bait. But since the information on the two pages is the same, I don't want them to compete with each other. I'm thinking of putting a cannonical tag on the neighborhood page pointing back to the rental page. Is that the correct thing to do in this instance? Thanks for your help. J

Should I optimize my home-page or a sub-page for my most important keyword
Quick question: When choosing the most important keyword set that I would like to rank for, would I be better off optimizing my homepage, or a sub page for this keyword. My thinking goes as follows: The homepage (IE www.mysite.com) naturally has more backlinks and thus a better Google Page Rank. However, there are certain things I could do to a subpage (IE www.mysite.com/green-widgets-los-angeles ) that I wouldn't want to do to the homepage, which might be more "optimal" overall. Option C, I suppose, would be to optimize both the homepage, and a single sub-page, which is seeming like a pretty good solution, but I have been told that having multiple pages optimized for the same keywords might "confuse" search engines. Would love any insight on this!

Category listing page coming above product pages
A new SEO client we have taken on seem to be hitting most of the points right on with their site and SEO. However one thing that is bugging me is that their category pages i.e. "Footwear" which title tag includes the brands they stock. Is almost always coming up above (if they are ever even found) the product individual pages. Anyone seen this sort of things happening? Very frustrating.

Autogenerated pages
My main product is database conversion software. As it supports tons of databases, it's fairly easy to generate thousands of landing pages simply by variating source/target database names, connection information etc. In fact, I autogenerated almost 25k pages that way. As I didn't want to jeopardize my main site, I placed all that content to a new microsite (www.fullconvert.com) which had no history and no inbound links. Results were nice - site is live two months and in second month already had 1300 visitors. Now, my question is - should I create the same thing on my (old and rather authoritative) main site www.spectralcore.com? I could use a different template to avoid duplicate content. Of course, my main concern is being penalized by Google. In my opinion, this autogenerated content is fine because it provides (tons of) laser-focused landing pages, so visitors will instantly recognize they found what they're looking for. But Google might disagree! What do you think? Is there a danger in trying to leverage authority of my main site in adding 20k+ autogenerated pages with inbound no links to them?
