When rankings dip what's the best diagnostic procedure?

Bonjourno from 10 degrees C lighly raining Wetherby UK
Every so often SEO feels like a game of snakes & ladders. One minute your rankings go up and then then within the click of a mouse they drop back down. Like a Greek play you begin to feel our mortal lives as SEO pundits is controlled by the Google Gods.
A case in point is illustrated here in this graph:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/lincoln-drop_zpseeb04690.jpgNow if i want to explain why the rapid dip has occured for target term "Lincoln Solicitors" here's is what i'd do:
1. Go to webmaster tools and check for crawl errors
2. See if a Google algo change has changed the rules of engagment
3. Check another site administrator hasnt tinkered with the original layout
But i wonder what process do other SEO practitioners follow to explain to a disgruntled client - "Why have my rankings that i pay you to look after nose dived?"
Any insights welcome:-)

I would check where those 500-errors originate from. Your website does not handle errors well do - i.e. the link to "/About-Us/Partner-Profiles/Partner-Profiles/Anna-Mosey.aspx" throws a 500 and should really be 404's or 410's.
When I do the search (from South Africa), the search term is on page 1, 4th position.
I would perhaps have a look at validating HTML as well - found it quite strange that the anchor-texts in the have so much trailing whitespace.

Well, firstly we can do a simple check against dates of known algorithm updates and see if that matches the drop.
So, you have a good rank on 17th July and have dropped at the next rank check on the 26th July.
Panda 3.9 hit on July 24th so there is every chance the site was flagged in this update so that would be my first port of call to see if this seems a likely case.
It's very hard without a link, but start with the dates and if you find something that seems like it could be the case then review the page to see if it is weak, or a near internal duplicate or some such.
I have checked the 14th result for that search term and the page is pretty weak, I am not sure if this is your client but if it is (first two letters of url are www.bm) then these are very weak pages with little to no unique content beyond the address so this is a page created pretty much entirely for search engines so is typical panda fodder.
So, to resolve? Make this page better along with other similar ones and if that is the case, then it should help resolve matters.
Hope that helps!

Bing rankings question
Hi, We just wrapped up a website redesign about a month ago. The content stayed primarily the same. Once we launched the new site all of our rankings in Google stayed the same but we lost rank for all competitive keywords on Bing. I looked in Bing Webmaster tools and it doesn't show any penalties but it does show that we have too many H1 tags. I don't think the H1 tag thing is the issue but maybe. Do you know what could be causing this?

Strange URL's for client's site
We just picked up a new client and I've been doing some digging around on their site. They have quite the wide variety of URL's that make for a rather confusing experience. One of the milder examples is their "About" page. Normally I would expect something along the lines of: www.website.com/about I see: www.website.com/default.asp?Page=About I'm typically a graphic designer and know basically nothing about code, but I just assume this has something funky to do with how their website was constructed. I'm assuming this isn't particularly SEO friendly, but it doesn't seem too bad. Until I got to another section of their site. It's a section that logically should look like: www.website.com/training/public-seminars It's: www.website.com/default.asp?Page=MT&Area=Seminars&Sub=MRM Now that's nonsensical to me! Normally if a client has terrible URL's, I'd say let's do some redirects, but I guess I'm a little intimidated by these. Do the URL's have to be structured like this for some reason? Am I missing some important area of coding here? However, the most bizarre example is a link back to their website from yellowpages.com. Where normally I would expect it to lead to their homepage, I get this bizarre-looking thing: http://website1-px.rtrk.com/?utm_source=ReachLocal&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=AssetManagement&reference_id=15&publisher=yellowpages&placement=ypwebsitemip&action_target=listing_website And as you browse through the site, that strange domain stays. For example the About page is now: http://website1-px.rtrk.com/default.asp?Page=About I would try to google this but I have no idea where to even start! What is going on with these links? Will we be able to fix them to something presentable without breaking their website?

Redirecting .edu subdomains to our site or taking the link, what's more valuable?
We have a relationship built through a service we offer to universities to be issued a .edu subdomain that we could redirect to our landing page relevant to that school. The other option is having a link from their website to that same page. My first question is, what would be more valuable? Can you pass domain authority by redirecting a subdomain to a subdirectory in my root domain? Or would simply passing the link equity from a page in their root domain to our page pass enough value? My second question is, if creating a subdomain with a redirect is much more valuable, what is the best process for this? Would we simply have their webmaster create the subdomain for us an have them put a 301 redirect to our page? Is this getting in the greyer hat area? Thanks guys!

Need advice for new site's structure
Hi everyone, I need to update the structure of my site www.chedonna.it Basicly I've two main problems: 1. I've 61.000 index tag (more with no post)2. The category of my site are noindex I thought to fix my problem making the category index and the tag noindex, but I'm not sure if this is the best solution because I've a great number of tag idexed by Google for a long time. Mybe it is correct just to make the category index and linking it from the post and leave the tag index. Could you please let me know what's your opinion? Regards.

Sudden drop in ranking google.co.uk ranking
Anyone else had any sudden drops in rankings this week? Is there an update going on? One of my primary keywords has dropped from 6th to 49th in the google.co.uk search results. Not in webmaster tools to flag an issue. I have downloaded the links from webmaster and it does look if some content has been scraped and then linked back to us from a large number of sites that we have never sort links from. I have upload the google disavow link tool. Only one keyword appears to be effected not all of them? Any ideas? Thanks
