Fresh set of eyes on this page please. Why isn't it ranking?
-
Morning all, I'd really appreciate it if you could take a quick look at this page and see if I'm missing something here.
The targeted keyword (wedding favours) is pretty competitive and the rank had been slowly improving until recently and we've now slipped to 25th on Google UK. I've added a "Pay with a tweet" button for our eBook which has been pretty well received (around 100 downloads) so far so the social side is better than our competition.
I've also written a few guest blogs with links back to the page from a variety of sources.
Here is the page analysis on OSE.
If you could take a quick look and let me know if I'm missing anything here, it would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Brendan,
Are you still having difficulties with this thread or have we managed to solve the issue you've been having?
-
I don't think having a subdomain is a problem in itself, but the problem is that the internal URLs are relative and so is the canonical link, and if someone gets a shop URL and removes shop or replaces it with www or a browser mishandles it, then you will end up with people getting 404 errors.
At the very least, whatever is handling the www side, if it gets a shop URL, it should 301 to the shop.
Whatever it was that Ben and I drank, it isn't good for us.
Favours it is.
Your H1 has spurious whitespace:
<h1> Wedding Favoursh1>
-
Personally I don't see a problem with the shop being on a sub-domain if I'm honest, long as you have good pages on /www.confetti.co.uk with a logical heading structure and good keyword usage in the page then it should be fine.
-
Thanks for the replies guys. Unless I'm going crazy here, the H1 tag is for wedding favours and not wedding flowers.
I take your point about the canonical link. Unfortunately this is an issue with our CMS which I'm looking to resolve shortly. Do you think that could be one reason for the ranking?
I also completely agree with you on the sub domain issue. It's something I want to resolve in the long term but in the short term, it's not really an option I'm afraid.
Thanks again guys.

Good answer Alan. Sadly I posted a reply before going to work and didn't have much time for a really in-depth look so I provided (what I thought) was a good on-page starting point.
I agree with your comments and would say this is probably another good reason for the poor rankings.
-
Brendan,
yes, what Ben said, plus, if you want to rank for wedding favours, then not having it in the H1 isn't helping you.
You are #15 for Wedding Flowers - which is most important to you?
Your Canonical tag is relative, which is allowed, but an absolute path leaves no room for misinterpretation.
Plus, you have a big problem:
You have shop.website and www.website and if you try the www version of that URL you get a page not found, so you are throwing away traffic.
Your system needs to be smart enough to realise that is a shop URL and do a 301 redirect.
- and this is the reason you really need the canonical URl to be absolute.
-
One thing I would say is that the on-page seo could be improved. Your main heading
is "Wedding Flowers" and there are no h2 tags on the page. I would recommend that you use
tags for the products like
Favour Bags
or
Seed Wedding Favours
that will give google a bit more to play with.
You might want to add a 2-3 line description of what the products are to entice people to click through to view the product page, this would allow you to potentially bold keywords or at least provide more textual content for search engines to use to rank that page.
You can add more keywords into the title and alt text of the images, but its good to see you're using the alt and title tags, most people forget that!

Domain and page backlinks
Hello Everyone, I am new at SEO, and I am a bit confused with the following situation: I have domain, wordpress site on it, and I am building backlinks to it (testing). I do not have "home" page among pages in wordpress, if it means anything. When I build links, i use different anchor texts, but they all point to http://somethingsomething.net -Ahrefs shows that I have 830 backlinks from 45 domains, to my URL, which is http://somethingsomething.net (it is also my site's home page address) -MOZ;s Open site explorer, on the other hand, shows the following: 8 internal links and 0 external links for page specific metrics, and 878 total links 0 external for root domain metrics. -Google Webmaster tools shows 10 external links pointing to my site Please can someone explain to me what is happening here? Thanks a lot

It would be much appreciated as I have never been hit by an update so not sure on how to recover from one. Thanks!

Page Rank, Domain Rank, Link Building....Oh my!
Hi Everyone, So I am looking into a couple of sites that we can use for press release distribution. Naturally, I am looking for sites that will improve our SEO (sites that have a high domain authority). I guess I am just trying to wrap my head around the whole domain/page authority and how it effects our SEO. So for example, I am looking at prlog.org. They have an overall domain authority of 91...sweet! Is this all I should be looking at when I am looking to place a press release, which will include targeted links using appropriate anchor text? If I drill down even further to the actual section that the press release will live on, which will be the security section of the site, the page authority is a 49. Is this what I should be looking at? Do I have to drill down even further and look at the page rank for the actual URL that my press release will actually live on? I am assuming since it will be a totally new page that the page authority will be very low. Is this correct? Should I be looking at a combination of the two? The page authority of 49 is pretty low but the domain authority is very high. What does this mean for my SEO and my links? In a nutshell I need to know what I should be looking at for SEO purposes, is it domain authority, is it page authority of the section the site will live on or is it the actual page that my press release lives on. Is it a combination? What would you do in this situation? Also, could you give me a little more insight into when a low domain/page authority can actually hurt you. What the threshold where you get no link juice or are actually penalized? Do you have any insight in the domain/page domain number that is considered not worth it? Thanks all! Pat

Merging 10 niche pages into 1 large page: how to go about it?
Good day,
Link Building | | rayvensoft
I am new to SEOmoz, so please allow me to take this opportunity to introduce myself before jumping into the questions. I have a small network of sites that focus on language education online. I have been working on them for about 3 years, and they were starting to do well. I am sure I made some mistakes along the way with regards to SEO (I paid for article distribution, and directory submission). I also did link exchanges - mainly with related sites, but some of them were kind of grey . I stayed away from blackhat entirely.
So, like many people I got affected by Google Penguin. Luckily it was not as bad as many of the people I have heard about. 7 out of my 10 sites, stayed on or near the top for the main keywords. They did however drop for some of the secondary keywords. 3 of the sites however got hit hard. Based on this, I have ventured to guess that google is telling me I was doing it about 70% right, and 30% wrong. Well, live and learn.
After April 24th I started to scower the web to find out what happened and to see what to do. In my readings I noticed that a lot of people were affected, but some where not. The one thing I found that most of the people who were affected had in commune was that they were on SEOmoz. So I decided to join. So now I am here to hopefully learn what I did wrong, and what I need to do right. I have no problem at all in starting from scratch and putting in the hard work. Now, as for my question. As I mentioned, not all of my sites were hit by Penguin. More of them survived than got killed. I was hoping to be able to leverage those sites to give the new larger site a kick-start. Just to give you some metric, all 10 sites have a quality rank of between 40-60 according opensiteexplorer. The linking is nothing extreme. The pages have anywhere from 200-1000 links. Nothing more than that. So here are the questions. 1) The SEO I did on all 10 sites were very similar. So I am afraid of just doing a 301 redirect from the 7 other sites in the future google may punish them as well, and as such my main page new page will suffer. What would you guys recommend. Instead of a 301, I could just ad a link to the sub pages on the new site. It would be less effective, but also less risky. What would you all suggest? 2) If I take the 301 option, what is the general recommendation on how to phase it in. I am assuming Google would not like it if all 7 pages got redirected on the same day. That would essentially make the page have 5000 or so links overnight. What is the general recommendation for these kinds of things. one 301 a week? one 301 a month? The 301's would not be to the homepage, they would each go to a relevant sub-section of the site. Sorry for the long first post. My wife tells me I don't know when enough is enough sometimes. 🙂 Thanks in advance for any assistance and I am excited to see what I can learn on SEOmoz.0 -

Multiple links to dead pages
I have just taken over a client and have been shocked to see a lot of wasted 'link juice' from hundreds of websites linking to old/dead pages within my client's domain. My question is - what is the best method to re-capture that juice given that it is impractical to change the links at source. Thanks.
