What free app/tool do you wish existed?
-
Is there something you find yourself needing to do, but there is no tool to help you do it? A task you do all the time you're sure could be done easier with a nice app?
I'd love to hear about it! If we like your idea, we'll create it and make it 100% free (for linkbait, of course!).

I would like to monitor my competitor's link building. I give your tool 5 competing urls and then the tool accesses some backlink database to tell me (1) the number of newly discovered links for each url that day (like the MajesticSEO backlinks chart when using fresh data), and (2) lists the new links along with the estimated mozRank or something (so I can see if they got any really important new links). The goal would be to (1) keep tabs on competitor link building campaigns, and (2) identify places I should ask for links to maybe get similar links to what they recently got (ala the Competitive Link Research Tool at SEOmoz).
Another cool one would be something to tell me which keywords I should focus on among those I've optimized pages for. For example, if I have 100 pages optimized for 100 different keywords, the tool would go fetch the estimated traffic for each keyword from Google. Then it would estimate how much traffic each spot in the first 10 or 20 spots of the SERPs would be worth in terms of clicks (using the studies that show the 1st spot gets x% of the clicks, the 2nd spot gets y% of the clicks, and so on. Then it would lookup my current Google rankings for each keyword. Finally, it would give me a sorted list of ways to improve my organic traffic by comparing my current ranking with a targeted ranking (user-defined, perhaps) and say: If you moved "keyword 5 from its current spot 8 to a target spot 3 you would increase your organic traffic from this word by 200 clicks/day" (or something like that). And then repeat for every keyword. The reason I want this tool is that sometimes I find myself optimizing a long-tail keyword where even if I get the #1 ranking I may only get 5 clicks/month. Even those are possibly very highly targeted, the time spent achieving that #1 ranking might be better spent getting a #3 ranking for a keyphrase that has 1000x more traffic. A tool to help me prioritize time vs estimated reward would be helpful.

I personally wished there was a tool to convert my recipe website into a microformatted hrecipe website. This is proving to be a painful task because I have over 1500 recipes posted. There are some plugins that do this, but they are adding tons of extra code, and formatting that I do not want.

Tools to see how many times a domain has been bought and sold? Domain Owner History?
Hi Folks! I'm in the process of trying to buy a domain off someone who isn't really using it for much other than a single anding page for his defunct company. The current ower is putting a massively high price on the domain (five figures) which is WAY more than what any regular buyer would value it at. He claims he paid that price several years ago when he bought it. I don't believe him, and I feel he's just using that as an excuse to value his domain very highly. Does anyone know of any tools I could use to help me see how many times the domain has changed owners? I have a sneaking suspicion that he is the original owner, but I have no way to tell. It currently has privacy on it so I can't tell much by looking at whois.sc or using my subscription to whorush.com. Any one have any other ideas for me?

Do you use interns in your company/agency?
I was reading a CNN article about interns at the White House and how much it costs them financially as the position is unpaid. Recently there was a story re a Bank of America intern who had died after working 72 hours straight - I did not read up on it and have no opinion, but interns are in the news. We use interns regularly and we only use paid interns. The rationale behind it is that we are not looking for free labor, we are looking for bright people who want to learn and contribute and if they are going to contribute, why would we not pay them. Secondarily, whenever I have been in a place where the interns were not paid, they seemed to be in charge of coffee and donuts. (And that's my job.) We want to have them teaching and learning from day one. We place real client issues in their hands and we are very serious about it. The work is always checked by a senior staff member, but I never cease to be amazed by what they can produce when you believe in them. We recently had 6 heading back to college or HS and we put on a crepe party with a local creperie in our offices. It was a huge success. It was funny to see a couple of other marketing firms that know us come out within a day or two with how they are looking to hire interns. As I looked at those and others, I found several large agency types stating they take interns but they are not paid and mainly because of the superior experience, etc. So, if you have interns do you pay them or not and why? I am not looking for anything around right or wrong, I am trying to let you know if you are diligent in hiring them, you will be astounded at what they and you can achieve.

Best Website satisfaction Survey Tool/Company to use
I need to do a voice of customer survey on one of our key webpages. It's basic questionnaire of why did you come here today, did you complete your task, etc. The company we were using last time Ipercetion has gone up tremendously in price and I was looking for another vendor with same attributes of easy to build survey and simple code that can be put on page easily. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Best X-Cart SEO Solutions / Modules?
We recently acquired an e-commerce client that uses X-Cart. We have no previous experience with this platform and it's hard to find any good / helpful info regarding SEO functionality online. Right now I need to figure out how to handle mass redirects of 404 errors, friendlier URLs, resolving duplicate content, XML sitemap generation, robots.txt generation. The functionality built into the platform so far is terrible and all of the modules are pricey. Any recommendations, general or specific, would be insanely helpful if anybody out there has experience with this particular platform. Thanks!

Siloing/Sculpting... confusion....
Hiya, I saw that someone asked something similar to this here but I'm wondering if anything has changed. I've found some stuff exclaiming that siloing is a must, and should always be done. But then I've seen that you guys don't really endorse it, or at least in that Q&A you didn't and I can't find anywhere that you give instruction on the best way to do it, except a tiny bit by Richard Baxter here... and usually you do a lot more with everything that is worthwhile. So I guess my question is, where do you stand on it? and if you are for it, will Rand do a tutorial on the best way to go about it, with lots of diagrams and stuff at some point? 😄 Thanks, Steve.
