Siloing/Sculpting... confusion....
-
Hiya, I saw that someone asked something similar to this here but I'm wondering if anything has changed.
I've found some stuff exclaiming that siloing is a must, and should always be done. But then I've seen that you guys don't really endorse it, or at least in that Q&A you didn't and I can't find anywhere that you give instruction on the best way to do it, except a tiny bit by Richard Baxter here... and usually you do a lot more with everything that is worthwhile.
So I guess my question is, where do you stand on it? and if you are for it, will Rand do a tutorial on the best way to go about it, with lots of diagrams and stuff at some point?
Thanks,
Steve.

Thanks for the reply. Well, it's more on the siloing side of things that I'm wondering, it's just I noticed on a Bruce Clay article that he says scuplting and siloing are pretty much the same thing with different names... is that not the case?
I understand what to do with siloing (well, I sort of understand it) and I understand why to do it, or at least I understand the reasons given that I've read, but it's cloudy at best.
My question really relates to siloing through themes. I can see how it would be beneficial but only if what I've read is correct... and I don't know that it is. In terms of what have I read, I just Googled "Siloing" and read a bunch of articles on the first couple of pages.
Also, I'm doing the SEMPO Advanced SEO course (which FYI doesn't seem that advanced so far, it should be called the SEMPO Intermediate SEO course really, I was hoping to learn some stuff and this siloing is the first thing I've come across in it that I didn't already know), anyway... the course recommends siloing if you have any content that is not indexable, or not easily indexable (Javascript, Flash, etc...).
I gather there really is no definitive answer as to whether it's something that should be done?

Do you use interns in your company/agency?
I was reading a CNN article about interns at the White House and how much it costs them financially as the position is unpaid. Recently there was a story re a Bank of America intern who had died after working 72 hours straight - I did not read up on it and have no opinion, but interns are in the news. We use interns regularly and we only use paid interns. The rationale behind it is that we are not looking for free labor, we are looking for bright people who want to learn and contribute and if they are going to contribute, why would we not pay them. Secondarily, whenever I have been in a place where the interns were not paid, they seemed to be in charge of coffee and donuts. (And that's my job.) We want to have them teaching and learning from day one. We place real client issues in their hands and we are very serious about it. The work is always checked by a senior staff member, but I never cease to be amazed by what they can produce when you believe in them. We recently had 6 heading back to college or HS and we put on a crepe party with a local creperie in our offices. It was a huge success. It was funny to see a couple of other marketing firms that know us come out within a day or two with how they are looking to hire interns. As I looked at those and others, I found several large agency types stating they take interns but they are not paid and mainly because of the superior experience, etc. So, if you have interns do you pay them or not and why? I am not looking for anything around right or wrong, I am trying to let you know if you are diligent in hiring them, you will be astounded at what they and you can achieve.

Long copy/articles vs short copy/articles
Hi i'm after data which shows having long articles (e.g. 3000 words) outperforms a much shorter article like 1000 words (assume they are both the same quality of articles) for SEO and even conversion. So far i have seen these articles. http://moz.com/blog/why-content-goes-viral-the-scientific-theory-and-proof including the PDF which links to it. http://moz.com/blog/what-kind-of-content-gets-links-in-2012 Can anyone recommend any other sources which backs the claim that long articles are normally better than short articles. Cheers, Matt

Best Website satisfaction Survey Tool/Company to use
I need to do a voice of customer survey on one of our key webpages. It's basic questionnaire of why did you come here today, did you complete your task, etc. The company we were using last time Ipercetion has gone up tremendously in price and I was looking for another vendor with same attributes of easy to build survey and simple code that can be put on page easily. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Difference Between www.domain.com and www.domain.com/ ?
Hi, Of course, it is obvious that when other sites link to you, they choose how to do so in terms of the anchor text. My questions is: 1. Most of the domain names I see on the web are: www.domain.com/ however, I am pretty sure that when someone thinks you have a site that there members can benefit by they will link to: www.domain,com , am I coorect in stating that the search engines (SE) see these as two separate and distinct domains? 2. If so, are these too, then these must be different and distinct as well: www.domain.com/best-service vs. www.domain.com/best-service/ **I went on that assumption and have created 301 directs for the latter example. ** 3. How would one check to see if a 301 direct is in place? As always, I am appreciated to this site and member's skills. Jim

What free app/tool do you wish existed?
Is there something you find yourself needing to do, but there is no tool to help you do it? A task you do all the time you're sure could be done easier with a nice app? I'd love to hear about it! If we like your idea, we'll create it and make it 100% free (for linkbait, of course!).
