E-commerce Adding New Content - Blog vs New Page
-
I have an ecommerce site (www.brick-anew.com) focused on Fireplace products and we also have a separate blog (fireplacedecorating.com) focused on fireplace decorating. My ecommerce site needs new content, pages, internal links, etc... for more Google love, attention, and rankings.
My question is this: Should I add a blog to the ecommerce site for creating new content or should I just add and create new pages? I have lots of ideas for relevant new content related to fireplaces. Are there any SEO benefits to a blog over new static pages?
Thanks!

Thanks Kate - I originally created the seperate blog so that it could develop into a brand of its own. But now the main ecomm site is getting stale and it is the revenue generator. We have articles and static pages on the site, but I am curious if going with a blog on the site would provide any additional benefits as opposed to continuing to add articles as static pages.
We are on an x-cart platform - would you go with a Wordpress add on?
Thanks,
SAM

Thanks Nakul - we do use the fireplacedecorating blog, but the main ecommerce site needs new content and new pages. I would add the blog to your e-commerce story. This way you can continuously create new content and you will aslo be able to create content to link out to and lead back to your e-commerce site, which should over all help you gain in traffic. I usually don't recommend keeping the blog separate from the e-commerce brand unless you have a significant reason for doing so. Is fireplacedecorating.com currently ranking? If so I understand why the blog is separate.

Sam You are not currently using the blog/domain at fireplacedecorating.com ? I like that domain better compared to the brand URL which is hyphenated. Anyways, to answer your question directly, I see that you already have a lot of content on your ecommerce store site. How is it doing ? It might make most sense to continue to strengthen and add new content there vs adding it to a brand new domain. You could also consider adding a www.brick-anew.com/blog. I hope this helps.

Pages with similar content: Redirect or Canonical? Or something else?
We have two pages on our site with similar content. One was originally a landing page for a marketing campaign, somewhat of a micro-site feel with a lot of content. We recently optimized another page on the site with much of the same content from the original landing page/micro-site. In order to avoid duplicate content, and to let Google know our authority page is the new page, we're wondering what is best practice: Should we... 301 redirect the old page? No index the old page? Keep both pages and use a canonical to tell Google the new page is authority? Or something else?

PageSpeed Vs Page Size
Hi, We all know that Google doesnt like slow loading pages, fair enough! However, for one of my websites, user interactivity is key to its success. Now each of my pages are fairly large sized (ranges in the order or 1.8 to 2.5 MB) because it has a lot of pictures, css and at times some Java script elements. However, I have tried to ensure that the code is optimized - for example html minified and compressed, caching enables, images optimized and served through CDN, etc. In spite of high page size, my GTMetrix PageSpeed score is 93+ for most pages. However, the number of requests served is 100+ and page loading time is 4.5s + as per GTMetrix and Pingdom. My question is - should this matter from an SEO perspective. Is google likely to penalize me for high loading time even though I am serving highly optimized pages? I really dont want to cut down on the user interactiveness of my website unless I have to from an SEO perspective. Please suggest. Here is my homepage, just as to give you an idea of what i am talking about: www.dealwithautism.com

We are switching our CMS local pages from a subdomain approach to a subfolder approach. What's the best way to handle this? Should we redirect every local subdomain page to its new subfolder page?
We are looking to create a new subfolder approach within our website versus our current subdomain approach. How should we go about handling this politely as to not lose everything we've worked on up to this point using the subdomain approach? Do we need to redirect every subdomain URL to the new subfolder page? Our current local pages subdomain set up: stores.websitename.com How we plan on adding our new local subfolder set-up: websitename.com/stores/state/city/storelocation Any and all help is appreciated.

Duplicate Content www vs. non-www and best practices
I have a customer who had prior help on his website and I noticed a 301 redirect in his .htaccess Rule for duplicate content removal : www.domain.com vs domain.com RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com [NC]
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | EnvoyWeb
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com/$1 [R=301,L,NC] The result of this rule is that i type MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com in the browser and it redirects to www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com I wonder if this is causing issues in SERPS. If I have some inbound links pointing to www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com and some pointing to MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com, I would think that this rewrite isn't necessary as it would seem that Googlebot is smart enough to know that these aren't two sites. -----Can you comment on whether this is a best practice for all domains?
-----I've run a report for backlinks. If my thought is true that there are some pointing to www.www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com and some to the www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com, is there any value in addressing this?0 -

Blog Duplicate Content
Hi, I have a blog, and like most blogs I have various search options (subject matter, author, archive, etc) which produce the same content via different URLs. Should I implement the rel-canonical tag AND the meta robots tag (noindex, follow) on every page of duplicate blog content, or simply choose one or the other? What's best practice? Thanks Mozzers! Luke
