Content by Country
-
Currently we have a news website aimed at several countries. We want to filter the content of some url (home, category pages, ...) using the country of origin of the visitor.
For example in the home we've heard of global character, and a column with news of the country of origin of the visitor.
This may affect the position or cause a Google penalty?
thank you very much

According to Matt Cutts this sort of thing is ok - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFf1gwr6HJw - provided you're not treating Googlebot differently - which would be cloaking.
However, as I said above I have seen sites that have implemented this sort of thing penalised - likely because they've inadvertently tripped some sort of cloaking filter (even though strictly speaking what they're doing isn't cloaking).
Hope this helps,
Hannah

Thanks for the replies.
I show you what we do on the Web in beta
gestion.org / beta
All content is the same for all countries, except the middle column shows posts where the user's country. So far only four countries (Spain, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia). If a user is not in any of these countries, shows general posts.
This can be done?

Hi Jose,
Are you talking about doing an IP redirect to country-specific URLs? Or changing the content displayed based on the user's IP?
If so, I don't really like either of those options - automatically redirecting a user based on IP can cause issues in terms of indexation as Google crawl via a US IP, and if you're not careful US content is all they'll be able to see.
Similarly if you're talking about dynamically delivering page content based on IP - again you're likely to have indexation problems as Google may only be able to crawl and index US content; plus (more importantly) I've seen sites penalised in the past for doing this sort of thing.
If you want to direct visitors to the most appropriate content I quite like the approach that Cheap Flights use - if you visit cheapflights.com from a UK IP you're pushed to this page - http://www.cheapflights.com/workers/profile-select.aspx?sref=CFUK&redirect=GeoIP&geoip=GB&cfref=CFUS&spt=Home&rp=/
I hope this helps,
Hannah

Can i have your site URL ?? I am not sure but if you have filtered your content using country origin then it will not affect your ranking and does not cause Google penalty.

Optimizing a product category vs. a bespoke content page
Hi there, I work for a furniture retailer in the UK and I have a question about ranking for search phrases. Say I'm looking to rank for the keyword phrases: 'Tempur mattress' and 'Tempur mattress liverpool' and I have a category at: www.mysite.co.uk/tempur/ which list all of our mattresses, would I be better trying to optimize this page for those key phrases or would I be better generating a new page, say, www.mysite.co.uk/tempur-mattress-liverpool.html Thank you for your input.

This brought up another question. should the review page (which now has a canonical to the item page) be Index, follow? My item review pages are showing up with Duplicate Content errors in MOZ. Here are two examples http://www.americanmusical.com/ItemReview--i-HAM-SK1-LIST http://www.americanmusical.com/ItemReview--i-MAC-203680902-LIST is the problem that the pages contain the same code and questions with very little customer created info?

Duplicate Content from WordPress Category Base?
I recently changed my category base in WordPress and instead of redirecting or deleting the old base, WordPress kept the content up. So I now have duplicate content on two different urls - one on the old category base, one on the new category base. How should I handle this situation? The site is only a couple weeks old, if that makes any difference.

Static content VS Dynamic changing content what is best
We have collected a lot of reviews and we want to use them on our Categories pages. We are going to be updating the top 6 reviews per categories every 4 days. There will be another page to see all of the reviews. Is there any advantage to have the reviews static for 1 or 2 weeks vs. having unique new ones pulled from the data base every time the page is refreshed? We know there is an advantage if we keep them on the page forever with long tail; however, we have created a new page with all of the reviews they can go to.

Is duplicate content harmful? Example from on my site
I'm not talking about content copied from another site but content unique to a site being used on several pages. I have a delivery tab that has precisely the same content as another product page. This content is on four product pages and the dedicated delivery page. Thanks

Duplicate page content errors
Site just crawled and report shows many duplicate pages but doesn't tell me which ones are dups of each other. For you experienced duplicate page experts, do you have a subscription with copyscape and pay $.05 per test? What is the best way to clear these? Thanks in advance
