Embed hosted videos or Youtube videos on site
-
Youtube is our major source of traffic.
We also have many of the same videos on our own site, self-hosted. They use the same video player as our paid video course, which allows the user to increase or decrease speed.
We're debating whether to replace these self-hosted videos with youtube embeds.
Pros:
- Increase Youtube viewcounts
- More engagement with videos (videos suggested at end of youtube videos are almost all our own)
Cons
- Possible outbound traffic to youtube.
- We can't showcase our video player's speed change function
I'm not sure how embed views are taken into account by Youtube, and how big a factor outbound traffic is. Would you suggest swapping out our self-hosted videos for embeds?
We want to maintain our Youtube channel's edge, and convince people to sign up for our course.
-
If you just want the videos watched - Host the YouTube versions, but bear in mind that you'll be sacrificing rankings to your own site as a consequence.
Additionally consider that View Counts don't actually effective YouTube video's ranking position much. More important to improve visibility on YouTube.com is the user engagement (how many peopel watch the video through to the end and then thumb/comment/share it).
-
With all respect, that article is completely misleading.
While YouTube videos will almost always get indexed on your site, it does not then follow that your site is the one that ranks for them. 99 times out of 100, YouTube will outrank your site with the rich snippet.
-
We have the videos on Youtube right now as part of our marketing strategy. Currently, Youtube traffic is a large percentage of our referrals. We wouldn't take those videos down, even if we keep the self hosted embeds.
Does that change your answer? Our PageRank is pretty low, so I'm not sure we could outrank our competitors' Youtube videos even if we took down our own and set up a proper video sitemap.
Thanks

If you properly code a video you host yourself on your website, you have a chance for your page to rank for that video with a thumbnail in the search results as well, giving it a better CTR than a standard link.
If you host the video on youtube, then youtube will always out rank your site, so you're sending more traffic to youtube instead of to your sites page which will convert hopefully.
Webmasters spend time and money setting up a player on their site just for this reason. If you haven't generated video image thumbnails and submitted video sitemap.xml files you haven't done what you need to do in order to see the effectiveness that hosting videos on your own platform could bring.
-
I don't see why not, if the SERP display is the same, then it should have the same chance of increasing your click through.
I would say that would be a great test. Try a few videos using embedded youtube - so you can get more views (as you stated is desired) and a few self hosted. See if you can get them both to get an enhanced SERP display and watch the traffic.
-
That's a good point. We don't currently have a video sitemap, but we could set one up.
I did see this article that suggests Youtube embeds can now achieve the same effect. Do you know if they can be made just as effective?
-
One of the things you'll hear Rand stressing lately is how enhanced your SERP result is for your site. I believe that by self hosting and properly optimizing (video sitemap and related content) you could see higher click through for pages which get a video snippet in the SERP. You take up more real estate in the results and draw the users eye in. This could get you higher CTR and in the end more video views.
-
Hmm...the main action we want people to take on the page is to watch the video. The main effect of embedding them would be to boost our view counts. But I've heard embeds don't translate 1-to-1 into increased views, and I know a lot of companies (such as SEOmoz) self-host rather than embed.
I presume there is a reason.
What kind of CTA did you have in mind? I'm not sure what question it would solve.
-
How about adding a cta (call to action) next to your embedded video and then doing A/B split testing in Google Analytics Experiments?
Serve 2-3 versions of the same URL to your visitors, track everything in GA Experiments and then you'll get an idea which solution is better for your site.

Should I bother with a Video Sitemap?
Morning all, I've started a pretty aggressive Video content push in recent weeks. All our videos are on our YouTube channel. I decided to go with hosting the videos on YouTube based on my research on moz.com, especially considering the potential reach of the content on YouTube. What I'm finding is that the YouTube channel is doing great. We've hit 200 subscribers and 15K views in a little under a month. Wayyyy more than I could have ever hoped for. But the blog posts on our website are getting minimal traffic and no search visibility. That doesn't necessarily bother me, since the intention of our marketing campaign is to use YouTube to drive traffic to our website. So I guess my question is really more to do with optimizing the site with Video Sitemaps and best practices for Google Webmaster Tools. Right now we have YouTube videos embedded on blog posts like this one that have a time-stamp. But I've been working to create Gallery-style pages (no time-stamp) which would have multiple YouTube videos embedded on them like this one. These make it easier for visitors to watch multiple videos without needing to skip around to multiple blog posts. The challenge I'm running into is that when I go to submit a Video Sitemap to GWT I get an error saying that I have duplicate page content within the video sitemap. I've used several WP plugins to do this. It seems that when there is a video embedded on multiple URLs (pages + posts) the plugins will ignore the posts and only add the pages to the video sitemap. Here is my regular Sitemap Here is my video Sitemap I've attached a screenshot of my current Yoast Video SEO config if that's useful for reference. Does anyone have experience with using multiple sitemaps in GWT? I'm starting to think that maybe I shouldn't even bother with a video sitemap. Maybe those gallery-style pages should just go in the regular sitemap? Any thoughts or advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks llQfydA

Micro Site Penalty?
I have been carrying out On-Page optimisation only for a client www.shade7.co.nz. After three months or so I have been getting some great results, improving to the top three positions for at least 30 of 45 keywords targeted. Couple of more tweaks and I would be a very happy camper. Disaster overnight! Rankings CRASH! Unbeknown to me the client a month or so back decided to link just about every product/link on a micro site he owns (www.shademakers.com/ ) plus one other site he owns. Explorer I think discovered over 350 back-links (follow) from these sites! As this is a site he owns and it is targeting the same keywords I presume this falls into the EVIL bucket of SEO. Two part question do you believe I am correct that this is the reason for this rankings crash and what would be the best way to resolve this! server-side 301 redirect for the micro site? Delete the micro site (drastic measure) Remove all the links other than maybe one in the contact page saying visit our other site shade7 other options? The client or I have not received any bad link Emails from Google.

Updating Youtube Videos
My company has a popular Youtube channel. Some of the videos are old, and lower quality than the new HD videos we host on our site. We'd like to get the new, better videos on Youtube, but we don't want to erase the viewcounts and comments of the old videos. We also don't want a duplicate content penalty, if that exists on Youtube. What should we do? We could: 1. Overwrite our old videos with the new ones, and lose the view counts 2. Add the new videos, and leave the old videos untouched 3. Add the new videos, and add some kind of redirect from the old videos 4. Do nothing. We want to embed the new videos on our site to increase our Youtube view counts, so options 1-3 are preferable. Has anyone faced a similar situation?

Site structure from an SEO standpoint
I am fortunate enough to be working with a client who is still building their website. From a site structure standpoint, what can I look for with my SEO hat as they build their wire frames and storyboard their site? I want to make sure I don't miss any components that might be helpful short and long term

The speed of my site do you agree with my hosting company
Hi my site is www.in2town.co.uk and i have to be honest i am not really happy at the moment. i took a huge gamble because my site was getting around 10,000 visitors per day but because the site was getting really slow as i was using the old joomla my hosting company suggested to me to use the modern version of joomla as i was using joomla 1.0 Now for months i said no but they said the site would remain slow until i updated it. I decided to take a gamble and as i was going to now move it to the new joomla i decided that i would redo the whole site and make it better which i am doing at the moment. But even though i am paying for a dedicated server and have done what they have said and using the new joomla and according to them they have refreshed my database the site is still running slow. If anyone could do a test on the site and let me know what speed they are getting. Below is the email i have sent to my hosting company and below is also the resonce that i am getting from them.- I would love to hear your feedback as i have taken a huge gamble and when i get back from spain i will be continuing the finish the site which will take me another week to complate and get it the way i want it. here is the feedback hi can you please look into my site www.in2town.co.uk as i am getting lots of reports that it is slow. we redone the whole site which i am still working on because of it being slow and you said that you cleared everything in my database so there was nothing there so we can start from scratch. when i started building the new site you said that the database would be like a brand new one but it seems that this is not working. what i mean by this is, we listened to you and got a dedicated server as you said this would make the site faster, this did not work, you said about redoing the site and using the latest joomla as this would make the site faster and after a lot of work we done this although we are still continuing to build it and as a result of this we lost lots of traffic and links and rankings but even though we done this the site is still slow. i have to be very honest with you, i am not happy and feel disapointed as the site is slow and i need this sorting out. i am in spain at the moment meeting clients ref the site and it is embarrassing when they say the site is slow so please can you look into this for me Hello, Thank you for contacting TMDHosting Technical Support Team. We have checked your current server load and it is below 1: top - 11:53:54 up 123 days, 9:47, 1 user, load average: 0.24, 0.12, 0.11 this is shows that the system is running fine. You have close to 1GB RAM free which provides enough resources for your scripts to function. As the server state is healthy the optimization of your website should be applied on its coding and main functions. This is a development related optimization and we do not offer development services at this point. If your developer recommends a server with more resources provide us with his/hers requirements and we will provide you with suitable solution. Should you have any further questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact us. Best regards, Gabriel Reed from me., i will have to have someone look into this as it may be a case that i will have to get rid of my dedicated server and take the sites to another hosting company and see the difference with them and see if the site is faster as no one else using joomla has the problems that i am having. can you let me know what speed the site is then, and then compare this against some other sites. for example, female first, claire hegarty.co.uk etc as when i do speed checks i am getting back over ten seconds and the site which is very small at the moment should not be more than 2 seconds Hello, Please note that even if you move the website to another hosting provider this will not change the reason because of which its speed is not as per your requirements. However it is up to you to explore different options. What we have ensured is that your server is not overloaded and it has resources for the functions on it to run. The optimization of your website coding I am afraid are outside of our technical the scope of our technical support. Additionally note that the loading speed of your website depends on huge number of other factors on certain remote locations which are not under our control. Should you have any further questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact us. Best regards, Gabriel Reed

TMDHosting.com If anyone can please comment on this and look at my site www.in2town.co.uk and test it for me on speed and advise me as i have done everything they have said and it seems that the site is no faster. There is not much content on there at the moment as they managed to lose over 20,000 pages of content while transfering it all which i am not happy about. So there should not be an issue on speed and now i am working through and putting some of the old content back on while writing new content0
