How should I look to gain traffic for a blog hosted on our own site?

Ok I know what you're going to say.. social media etc right?
The problem is we do that already but we're stuck in an industry that just isn't very sexy!
People reading twitter/facebook don't want to read about toilets in their spare time, or keep it as a hobby.
If you search bathroom blog (uk google), you will see we are about 5th, it gets us no traffic, as I imagine it's not a popular term so I can see you starting to ask why we write a blog in the first place.
We write the blog because at the moment the whole industry is dominated by pile it high sell it cheap online stores and all their blogs are written for google only so finding decent or unbiased advice is rare.
Seriously, these guys are creating fake blogs and paying for links inside other blogs all over the place in order to boost their rankings so we figure if you really want some good advice people can't find it.
If they find our blog they will get some good advice and good content.. and then the hope is that they give us a call and we can see if we can help them.
The problem is these guys are hogging all the keywords.. and it seems the bathroom industry has very few keywords that people search!
Now I know we are in it for the long haul.. so taking time doesn't bother me, but I was wondering if there were any tried and tested places to post a blog that could get us at least seen so that people could see how different our content is?
Or if all else fails, can anyone suggest the right keywords to aim at besides the "bathroom suites" etc that these huge online stores dominate?

Have you used Google's keyword tool to find other relevant keywords people are searching for? I've found the tool very helpful for gauging how relevant a keyword is a determining how much effort I should put into ranking for that keyword. Thanks for the prompt reply.
I've tried the whole google alerts thing, but apart from finding some very dodgy pay me £200 and i'll spin your article a 1000 times type stuff anything moderately interesting usually mentions the bathroom as a place of the activity rather than the focal point of a search.
Completely agree on the useful answers bit, I think I will get straight on that one.

It's an unfortunate fact, that despite Panda and Penguin and all that other jazz there are still loads of over SEO'd sites dominating in certain niches. Maybe the overdue Penguin update will come along and help out but in terms of big keywords, you may find that you are left chasing some of those boys for a while who are playing the link building/buying game.
But, something else you said interested me much more than that:
"finding decent or unbiased advice is rare."
If that is true, then, you have an opportunity to provide that advice and people will find you. Now, you may not win tons of links as unlike Internet Marketing and SEO I doubt there are tons of toilet sites out there but over time, you will be able to build a powerful resource.
Likewise, if you provide lots of relevant information that people are looking for and you are pushed down by three or four spam blogs, aggressive retailers etc then people will keep looking till they find what they want and if you are the first person providing that info, then, you should be on to a winner.
If it was me, then I would work on figuring out the big questions that people have and getting them answered and then, try to find out what people are talking about relative to your niche and provide the answers. Use Google alerts to monitor discussion and start frequenting popular message boards and such to determine what common questions people have and make sure you are answering them.
If you swing into these discussions and provide best of class answers to people then you will soon start to see some solid referral traffic to supplement the people finding you through search.
So... if you are up for the long game, which content marketing really, really is and you are prepared to put the effort in then 12 months down the line, you will see the results.

I lost traffic from my website and the rankings also gone down... What should I do?
I've started working on a project recently (for 20 days) and it got average 1800 visitors per day and the ranking were seemed good. When I started that project, I saw that there were too many plugins installed. I removed unnecessary plugins and keep the importance ones. And I started modify some pages considering SEO perspective. Few days ago I created a backlink in reddit; from where I got way too much traffic in the site at the time and the server gone down. So I have to change the server. Now I see the drastic drop down in both ranking and the traffic. I am wondering if the ranking affected when I changed the server? Or Is there any other way to check why my ranking and traffic gone down?

Different site behind the flag
Hello, I am in a very complicated situation. I have a site in Itaian which is targeted in Italy by webmaster tools so the majority of the organic traffic comes from there and everything is fine. However this site got a link from a major international site. So now I get traffic from all over the world but I can't take advantage of it. From the Italian traffic I get from this site I see high pageviews numbers and many minutes in average visitor time. The problem in this situation is that for many reasons this website cannot be translated so I can put many language choices in this site. I want to ask, If I put, let's say an English flag in top of my site, that will indicate the English language, but instead of the user to see an English version of the site he/she will be redirected(no follow link) to another site of the same content in English, will this violate any of Google's guideline or hurt the seo of the original site? Blogger relationship - One Off VS periodic monthly blogging (which is best)
Good day all, I am interested in building relationships with my bloggers (i.e...people that are interested in my website and blog about it regularly). I would also propose to them the idea of blogging about our page regularly, perhaps recurring monthly. If the strategy is in place, could receiving links from the same bloggers each month cause any negative SEO effects? Thanks for your input.

Site dropping in rank even through there are more backlinks being added
Hello, One of my client's sites is ranking lower than he should. This happened when we took off backlinks (20 little blogs, several site-wide paid links. It really dropped the site, but it had to be done. Since then we've increased his # of root domains by 10% through white hat link building in his non-competitive niche, and rankings are still poor. I know that's not much in the way of added backlink value, but we're working on it. My question is, how have the recent (and coming) updates possibly effected us. We want to take the remaining problem areas off right away, but another drop in traffic is not a good idea. Even though the blogs (see below) have no backlinks of themselves, they cause drops when taken off) He still has -20 little blog backlinks w/ a quarter of them being exact match anchor text.

-3 links on a domain, this one looks fairly editorial, but there are a bunch of paid links on that page. Changing to non-exact-match anchor text

Do legitimately earned links from unrelated sites help or hurt?
We have a few charity events coming up that have offered to link back to our homepage. While we do genuinely like the charities we are going to sponsor, I'm not sure how those links will look seo-wise. For example, one is for the local high school basketball team and another is for a Pediatric Care Mud Run. To a human, these links make perfect sense, but to a robot, I'm not sure if it differentiates these links from spam/some negative link. Granted, I understand that a small percentage of links probably won't do anything either way, but I'd like to ignore that for the purposes of my question. All things being equal, do links such as these help or hurt? Thanks for your time and insight, Ruben

Cross-Site Links with different Country Code Domains
I have a question with the penguin update. I know they are really cracking down on "spam" links. I know that they are wanting you to shift from linking keywords to the brand name, unless it makes sense in a sentence. We have five sites for one company in the header they have little flag images, that link to different country domains. These domains all have relatively the same domain name besides the country code. My question is, linking these sites back and fourth to each other in this way, does it hurt you in penguin? I know they are wanting you to push your identity but does this cross-site scheme hurt you? In the header of these sites we have something like this. I am assuming the best strategy would probably be to treat them like separate entities. Or, just focus on one domain. They also have some sites that have links in the footer but they are set up like:

What's the best way to set up 301's from an old off-site subdomain to a new off-site subdomain?
