Duplicate Content: is it a myth?
-
Hi everyone, just wanted to clarify some things, i've heard about a million different things on this; I just wanted to ask if duplicate content is a myth or its not thanks.

It took me about 2-3 weeks each time. I have a large list of Wordpress ping services and I manually pinged everything I could so it's possible it could take longer. Make sure you have a sitemap in WMT and it should speed you along as well. If you just made the change, I'd suggest resubmitting a map so they recrawl fresh.

How long did it take for the tags to drop from Google's index?
I have a site with about 800 tags indexed. Even after I did no-index follow, they're still showing up after a month. Do I have to wait it out... or could it not be picking up the noindex?

Thanks for the answer Matt I appreciate it

Our tested answer is that it's both. And therein lies the problem and the different answers you'll get.
Matt Cutts has repeatedly said "don't put your entire blog post on your homepage but if you have a teaser and link to the actual location that's a good way to do it." (http://www.webpronews.com/google-duplicate-content-2011-12)
He says Google understands blog structure but that you should only show excerpts other than the main page.
The issue is that it conflicts with a lot of things we've seen & heard including older stuff he's said.
"typically a whitehat site doesn’t neet to worry about 1-3 versions of an article on their own site"
The problem is say on Wordpress you tag a post with 15 tags. If you don't no-index a lot of your "ways" of seeing it, you don't have 1-3 versions. You can have 15 tags+ the permalnk + archive pages + category pages + ... and it just adds up. You shouldn't worry about 1-2 versions on your site. You should worry about 15-30 versions.
Out of curiosity, I ran a test on 2 generic wordpress.com blogs. I tagged one with 15 tags, tagged the other with 2 tags. Same subdomain length and topic. I indexed 3 posts with long random strings. In all 3 cases the one with 2 tags beat the one with 15 tags.
Then I no-indexed the 15 tag posts and they passed the 2 tag posts within 2 weeks. So in my experience, fewer duplicated posts meant more juice. However, no-indexing just the tags improved my SEO.
Small scale test but one I'd love to see repeated on a much larger scale sometime. In my opinion, duplicate content hurts unless it's excerpts (news sites, blog front pages).
Hope that helps (and explains why people give you both answers.)

Create content for long tail keywords.
I have identified some potential long tail keywords. But I am not a good writer. My strengths are in programming so I am coding the web site. In the mean time, what is the best way to create related content in terms of blog entries. I intend to have landing page in my blog and rank it as high as possible. How did you outsource the good content creation. How much did you pay? Thanks..

How can a site with no content, non SEO optimized or any value rank better?
I understand there are many more variables to rank #1, but this site is currently #1 for one of our top keywords and I really don't understand what they Competior site barely has 200 words on any given page, very few content other than images with no ALT tags, titles, No H1 tags. in other words the website is not SEO optimized. My site has content, product descriptions, images, relevant titles, and definitely more optimized than competitor. My site VS competitor Total pages: 246 (me) vs 49 (them) Page Authority: 34 vs 26 MozRank: 5.3 vs 4.5 MozTrust: 5.7 vs 5.4 Domain Authority: 22 vs 17 External Links: 65 vs 7 Internal Links 152 vs 1 Followed Links 14 vs 5 More C-Blocks 14 vs 4 Total Social Shares: 127 vs 4

Content optimisation or Link Building first? Small clients & small budgets
Hi there. Apologies in advance for this long message! I have come from a large client-side SEO position where I had a small team of online marketers to assist in our SEO efforts. The effect was that we were able to work on link building and onsite optimisation at the same time and obviously give it 100% of our attention (and the website had very high DA and Trust). I have recently moved to a small agency where I am the sole SEO-Guy and my clients are small. I typically have no more than 8 hours to spend per month on all aspects of SEO (analysis, reporting, link building and content optimisation) per client and I have to strictly adhere to this. To make matters more difficult, these clients typically have weak back-link profiles (low in number and quality and all pointing to the home page) and poorly optimised content (which contributes to low DA & PR). I went through my first 'monthly process' for a particular client in September and focused my 8 hours on optimising the site content for a particular section of the website. This involved optimising meta titles & descriptions, body content and images for our chosen keywords. I didn't focus on links at all. I published the changes to the site on 23rd September. When I look at my rankings as of 6th October, one keyword in particular has dropped by 28 places (from 11 to 39) which seems excessive to me. In my mind, the changes I made were small, so this drop concerns me. The particular URL was ranking in position 11 for a keyword that I subsequently targeted to another (more relevant) page in the site. Both pages have the same MR, PA and links etc. I think I may have effectively cannibalised the keyword and to make matters worse, the new page isn't even in the top 50! Both pages are in the Google Index. So, this is my longwinded way of asking for your opinion on whether other SEOs in my position would recommend spending time on building the back link profile to strengthen DA and PR of deeper pages before you start making content optimisations (given I am unable to do them at the same time). It's tricky with small clients as they don't necessarily understand how long these things can take. Cheers! Laurie

Duplicate Website.. Please Help!
Hi, My Client's Website has been duplicated, exactly the same website theme and etc. It's like a mirror site and my client couldn't figure out who duplicated his website. Actually, it has been hit by Penguin update last May and didn't fully recover yet, because of unnatural links but there's a little improvement with its ranking. I have already fix the keyword stuffed from his homepage with a link to it and the footer links. After fixing it about a week, its ranking is moving up a bit from page 14 to page 8 but it's not stable. Sometimes it go back to page 10 then back to 8. But there still a lot of unnatural links pointing to his website using its targeted keywords to much. I guess the main issue here are the duplicate site and unnatural links pointing to his website. By the way, here's the original site of my client www.apparelus.com and here's the duplicate one www.fs-biz.info/ Thanks!

Sell content - will it be duplicate?
Hi, We are on the verge of selling some of our content articles to a business partner. But my concern is about the content appearing severeal places on the web. It will most likely be labelled as duplicate content. The articles have links to our site, so link building-wise it would be great to benefit from these. What would the best solution be? 1. If I ask the partner to set pages to noindex - google will not label it as duplicate content. 2. If the partner sets the pages with a canonical link to our page, will this be okay SEO wise? -Rasmus

Content toggle, tabs ad accordion for seo text
Hello there, I have two questions. 1. I want to ad seo text in content toggles, tabs and accordions. does Google robots view as seo text , eg, H1 text as it would be written direct on the page? 2. About Pinguin and link building. I am seeing up an onlineprintshop, where any industry can become a client. Lets say a medical company will be our client for prints. If they link back to our onlineprint page does Goole evaluates the link as a link from a related industry. Thanks for your kind answer. Kind Regards Mike 8bMCt
