What are the top directories?
-
If I was going to submit to 5 directories where would you recommend?
-
I would suggest that it would be vertical specific. But, if you are open to spending the money we suggest Yahoo Directory ($299) and Best of the Web (typically 99. to $150.)specifically. As to the dmoz mention, two things: while you can submit to DMOZ, you are not guaranteed to get into it and it often takes time, the second is I am still surprised by the people who utilize noodp, noydir. When you use those meta robots you block anything from those links. The reason for blocking is past based on my experience. I see sites with DMOZ links and they have noodp. (no open directory project - DMOZ).
For local, restaurants must be in Yelp, CitySearch, etc. (and some others - I am making a point about given verticals).
Always go for the BBB, Chamber of Commerce, etc. if you are a local business as these are high value links. Understand there are rules for each (BBB most cities you must have a site/business up a year, etc.). I think over time we will see more directories like these counting and less of the others.
As to the SEOmoz list, it is not bad in my opinion. I think these things are changing as fast as updates from the zoo. (Pandas, Penguins, etc). My hope is that Yellow Pages, Avvo, SuperPages, etc. go straight to, uhhh purgatory. They got in early and they are worthless in my opinion. The bigger issue is when they duplicate the clients content with cut and paste and the client doesn't do business with them. But, they got the early links all over the web and on Places, etc. because people were simply unaware.
As long as there are humans who are curating the directories there is the chance they will have value.
EDIT: Tate Larson has a list of 7 good ones here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/the-ultimate-top-10-directory-list
Hope this helps.

Without clicking on each link, I can't tell you if the directories still exist.
-
I was under the impression that was an outdated list... no?
-
Not all directories are bad - Just the spammy ones that serve no real purpose
If you can find one that fits your niche, it's a good move to include yourself.

Great link! So to confirm, if our site fits into this niche, then submit the website to that directory? I'm confused because I thought web directories were bad?
-
I believe it depends on your industry. However, the 2 I believe most everybody should be in..

Why Links from Top Level Domains doesn't Pass Link Equity?
Hello, I have a doubt about Equity-Passing links report of OpensiteExplorer.org According to Sam Weber http://moz.com/community/users/432678 links which pass value from one page to another including followed 301 and Meta refresh links are under Equity-Passing links. I am surprising after looking at the links report generated by opensiteexplorer.org. Most of the article and directory links which have low DA and PA are under Equity-Passing links. Whereas websites like EzineArticle or Articlebase which have good DA and PA are not found in either Equity-passing links or under only nofollow category. Please suggest me if the report of Opensiteexplorer is not good enough or the links from the site like Ezine Article doesn’t pass the link equity. Thanks.

Directory Submissions = Negative?
I see that a lot of SEO companies offer a large 5,000 directory submission package with slow, 160 day submissions. I don't mind spending the money to have this done, but my question is... would they help, or would they actually hurt my rankings? Since a lot of these directories are basically just copies of each other on different domains. As an added question, would it be worth submitting to all of the general directories on this list? http://www.seomoz.org/directories

Where to find specialized directories
I'm looking to find some specialized directories, as I assist with a laboratory robotics group. These can be paid (actually preferred for now) or free. I know that seomoz has a helpful list of directories, but I was wondering if anyone else knows of a good place to find specialized directories like this. Thanks.

Listings, paid profiles and directories
Hi, In the industry I am working in (education), we do have a lot of portals offering paid listings (for example profiles featuring a school, the courses you offer, sometimes with reviews etc). Almost all big competitors and big names normally do have these kind of listings. Besides from having to decide if these sites really bring the relevant conversions, I am wondering about their impact on SEO. An example for an offer:

Our Top Picks listing is a 40 word listing and logo we put on any 30 pages of our web site, example.com for 12 months, for $595 US. You can choose the pages you want, or we can put you on all our [category] pages, or certain continents/countries you want to target. Now, I am wondering: Do I have to worry about my linking profile ? (All of sudden a bunch of links with the exact same anchortext and content embedding to our site?) Or can I just decide to go with a paid listing based on the link value the page offers me? Looking forward to reading what you think!
