Rel=author and rel=publisher - what to use?
-
Hi guys i have a big e-commerce website, we have put rel=publisher on our homepage and linked it up with our google + profile.
We sell holidays and have a big resort guide full of quality content, do i need to put rel=publisher on those too?
It doesn't seem right to put a personal author with a personal google + page on content as the author. Do i simply as a business page use rel=publisher instead?
Any advice much appreciated, i find this confusing in all honesty on what benefits the most.

Going back to issues related to rel=publisher ...
Linking your brand's website to your Google+ brand page using the rel=publisher attribute (and vice versa) will verify ownership of the page, and may give your website a slight advantage in search rankings as you build up the value of your Google+ brand page. It may or may not help your brand make it into Google's Knowledge Graph (but is certainly worth a shot!), and will make you eligible for Google+ Direct. Google is also now using rel=publisher to determine relevancy. You should place the attribute on your most important page of your website (usually the home page). Do not place it on multiple pages.
I hope this helps!

Google Authorship places higher value on sites that have high quality content created by real people. Even if the brand is the content "author," an individual wrote the content. (People write content, not brands.) Google's Authorship program is proof of how much they value this, and your brand's participation in Google Authorship will help, not hurt, your brand. Encouraging authors to build up their personal Google+ profiles is key. If they contribute to other sites, that will increase their AuthorRank, which shows Google they are a trusted author, which means you want them writing for your website
My frustration is that there is no solution for collaborative pieces of content. There are solutions to give Authorship to multi-author sites. However, there are no solutions (that I am aware of) to give Authorship attribution to individual pieces of content that are co-authored. I can see this being a problem with "brand-created" content in particular (e.g., your resort guide, Paul.)

I'm with you there Dana - getting the edge right now will pay big when Google rolls out more features.
It stands to reason that they will start to do something more with brand authority as well as personal. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't?
I actually don't know of any sites that have used rel-publisher internally and have only found it on the homepage. Not to say there isn't some, but I haven't been looking. I will have a look on the next e-commerce sites I visit to see what they do.

Hi Andy and Paul,
I have been poking around some e-commerce sites, one is one I do SEO for and the other is just another site that was using rel=publisher. Here are the URLs so you can see how they display in Google's testing tool:
http://www.celebratecommunion.com [home page, rel=publisher]
http://www.celebratecommunion.com/prefilled-communion-cups-with-wafers-box-of-500.html [product page using rel=publisher]
http://www.uniquesquared.com [home page using rel=publisher]
Worth noting:
- All results in the Structured Data Testing Tool show the brand logo next to results. This is not currently being displayed my Google.
- The Structured Data markup for my product page is being recognized in Google Webmaster Tools
- The testing tool also acknowledges my Celebrate Communion site as having both rel=author and rel=publisher, despite the fact that only the rel=publisher tag is in the source code.
- UniquedSqured.com's site uses rel=publisher on the home page only and does not use any markup on product pages that I can see.
The one thing I haven't been able to figure out how to do is to get a thumbnail of my product image to show up in the Testing Tool results for my product page instead of the brand logo thumbnail. It's fairly a mute point right now since Google isn't displaying either right now, but it sure would be nice to be able to tell Google which image to serve up in the search results. I do believe that is part of Google's intention with the rel=publisher markup.
How about the two of you can you find any examples of people using rel=publisher on interior pages?
I hope this is helpful. I am completely fascinated by this whole topic and want to be ahead of the curve when Google starts rolling it out.

This is an interesting debate. There doesn't seem to be any 100% confident answers, perhaps they dont want brands being the author of their content.
Its crazy we have to ask these questions, some clarification would be fantastic.
-
I think thats the point Chris - there is no visual for brands right now. Even if you add a rel publisher and link it to a g+ business page, it still wont show anything.
Also, Google have confirmed that you shouldn't have both publisher and author on the same page.
-
So to confirm, can you show me an example of an ecommerce site that uses rel=publisher on the homepage merely for a visual representation? I thought the author's link would appear somewhere?
-
I recently was in a hangout with AJ Kohn who was talking at length about authorship, but made no mention of publisher being used on any page other than the homepage, and author only being used on pages within the site. Of course, no fix for this situation right now, but if you use publisher yourself on product pages, what are you finding this does for you? Does it throw up any warnings on the structured data testing tool?
-
Hi Paul,
I am in-house SEO for two e-commerce site, one large, one small. Rel=publisher is the way to go both on your home page and your product pages. You are correct in that rel=author is not appropriate in these situations. Andy is correct that Google is not yet displaying brands as authors, but I believe that is going to change over time.
Yes, if you mark up your pages for structured data using rel=author, the testing tool will display your brand image. It's just not displaying in Google search results yet.
Recently, Chris Goward of Wider Funnel marketing interviewed Janet Driscoll Miller (President and CEO of Search Mojo) about this very topic and she had some great advice which echoes what I've said above:
I have also appealed directly to Google for some guidance with this whole issue because not even expert search engine marketers and SEOs can seem to figure out how to handle it.
Hope this helps!

You're welcome - hope it gets sorted soon

I think Google need to come out more and decide what recommendations there will be for content written by a business. Currently its all so vague, not good. Thanks for your thoughts Andy much appreciated.
-
At the moment, I really don't have a solution myself and have been thinking about it.
You could try the business page as the author and do a little testing, but my guess is that it won't take advantage of this, just because I have yet to see brands turn up as an author.
Perhaps try it with a business page and run it through the structured data testing tool to see what it comes back with?
Andy
-
Hi Andy cheers for that.
The issue is why would i assign content written by my business to an individual, surely it makes sense got google to allow a brnad page to be the author of content.
I've got all this great content and i feel i might miss out on rankings/benefits from not assigning an author - but i dont want to assign any specific individual, it was written by the business as such. Any recommendations? perhaps google will let brand pages be the author of business content in the future?
-
Rel publisher is for the homepage only Paul and isn't for any internal pages - those should be given rel author.
I know what you mean about how it looks, but that is the way Google are doing things right now.
With large brands, I would be tempted to have rel publisher on the home page. What I can't tell you with any certainty is what others in a similar position do. However, I do know that you never see a brand turn up as a page author.
Andy

I Use them 100%, but The 5-star review system is archaic
The 5-star review system is archaic. Let me first say that 5-star reviews are a successful part of my eCommerce strategy and also everyone I know that is successful as well. Why are they out of date? When you look at something with a total of 400 four-stars reviws on Amazon, what does that tell you? Almost nothing if you don't read why it was not 5 stars. It could be something Amazon automatically fixes and you don't care about. Thus it's 5 stars. It could be an issue you really care about. It's now more like 3 stars or the real 4 stars. Different products have different types of things that cause less stars, not always obvious, good, or bad. Thus I propose a new system, one that you can read the rating and know what it means. It's called 3-Levels 5-Stars. It would vary per industry. For shoes it would be, like: Walking Shoe Sold Online 1. Matches Fantasy of Style I want: 1-5 2. Logistics Like cost and if it was broken on arrival: 1-5 3. Usability, Usefulness, Durability: 1-5 The goal is for 80% of the people to not have to look any farther than the three-level five-star system. Otherwise, everybody has to read every four-star review to know for sure what's up with that product. Same with 3 stars. 4 and a half stars. Just expand the little 5-star thing the world's got going to include three categories. You could also have a variation statistic for those that don't know that 4 reviews isn't a big enough set not to have variation in outcome, but that's only an extra addition.

Is google plus really useful?
Hi guys first of all i am really thankful for such an opportunity to test such a wonderful app and i didnt know there is a Q&A community here 🙂 i was actually searching on google about google plus and end up here but the thread i bumped into is a bit outdated anyway a little background on what i am doing. Our company have a 15 local branches, its a service that we provide on our local clients. I am totally new to SEO like 6 months and i am really learning a lot and i am now learning on how to build my own backlinks and my 1st struggle is on google+ actually i am dismayed that its too confusing (at first) but somehow i manage to understand but still unsure please correct me. So google+ has 2 type 1 is for personal and 1 is for brand am i correct? So since we have 15 local branches what i did is create a personal page and make it as our business page and then claimed all the 15 branches on google maps and all is verified now. You think im correct on creating a personal page and make it as our main business page? I asked because i want to create brands page on each branch or do I even need brand pages for my branches? Was thinking of this custom URLS for our main page (which is our personal page) +OurBusiness for the branch brand page +OurBusinessCity you think it would be cool? 🙂 then on about sections (brand page) where i can add links on tag line description i will put the dedicate branch page of our website www.ourbusiness.com/city, then on that website page i will also put our google plus brand page +OurBusinessCity so its a 2 way link. Please bare with me as i am fairly new to this and i am not really sure if my ideas are stupid so please dont laugh 🙂 By the way my another question is about the ABOUT ME section of google+ personal page, when i add link on the description its a nofollow, i know cause i have this extension on my browser that detects do/nofollow links but on the link section its a dofollow. On the other hand google+ brand page has no links section so if you have a link and want to include it on your google+ brand page easy way to do it is put it on description and i just found out its a do follow HOWEVER it seems like the links on both pages (personal, brand) are not seen by search engines i tried it on several google search simulator and also checked the source code of the pages and i cant seem to find the links so my question is, is google really that useful when it comes to backlink building? Another question is that when i build brand pages i have to use our brand name and so all the branches have the same brand names includes our personal page so all of those 16 pages have the same name, will it be ok? Another question is that is there anyway that i can edit its meta description? 🙂 please i am really new to google so bare with me. Thank you so much in advance and hope to hear from the gurus 😉

What is everyone using for social media reporting now?
Now that Moz has retired the social element, I'm at a loss as to what to use instead. What have you all switched to? We use Hootsuite to schedule Twitter and LinkedIn posts for our clients, and Facebook native mode for scheduling there. At the end of each month I produce an SEO report for each client and up to now, that's always included the social report from Moz. I want to be able to report on the following for Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. what traffic has come to the client's website from each social channel growth in followers/fans engagement for the month eg how many retweets, likes, shares etc best performing posts on each channel I've looked at Sprout, but it seems to me that in order for Sprout to give you all the reporting info you need, you have to use it to manage all your social media channels, and as mentioned above, we already use Hootsuite for this. I don't want to switch completely. Twitter Analytics gives me the info I want for Twitter, but doesn't output this to a pdf style graphical report. I just want a nice summary to give my clients every month. Any ideas as to the best way to report on all this while still using Hootsuite to do the scheduling? My feeling is that I just want a flexible, easy to use and comprehensive reporting tool that covers all social channels, and not a social media management tool.

Is this mistake in use of 'publisher' meta tag
Hi There!, There is a confusion with 'Publisher' meta tag. Instead of using 'Google+ page' we have used Google profile pages in meta 'publisher' tag on most of pages. Currently they all are indexed. Also, in 'Author' meta tag same Google Profile page is linked. E.g. - on page - https://www.sitegeek.com/arvixe , following are the publisher and author tags: <a href="https://plus.google.com/117949772080676863960" rel="<a class="attribute-value">publisher</a>">a> <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/102179677098786549874/about" rel="<a class="attribute-value">author</a>"> So I am not sure how much it would effect SEO rankings. Please suggest what would the best way to update it? Further, site has its Google+ page: [https://plus.google.com/+Sitegeekcom/posts ] so it should be updated in 'publisher' tag or we should create a new Google+ page using existing Author Google+ profile. Authorship not working despite code showing rel=author
When you run this page through the rich snippet testing tool, it says the page doesn't contain authorship markup. Problem is, a look at the code shows rel = author has been properly added, and the author has listed the domain as a site he contributes to. Hopefully someone in the forum can tell me what I'missing? Why isn't authorship effective here?

Instagram - Any ideas how this can be used for SEO?
If indeed Google does use social signals for ranking factors, how would you go about using Instagram for SEO (if it's even possible)? Thanks

Google 'Author' tag question (Guest Blogging)
Hi, It seems like im seeing more and more about the Author tag, its now in Webmaster Tools and Google+. If your guest blogging, is it a good idea to include the Author link back to your Google+ account? If your Google+ account is also connected to your website and Google confirms they can see the connection does the Author links help with ranking when you push them back to the connected Google+ account?

Anyone know if optimal Twitter use frequency for promoting a keyword i.e how much is too much
Have a Twitter account and theres much confusion over Twitters use of planting keywords into posts and have some SEO benefit from this. Wondering if anyone has come accross an effective use of promoting keyterms on by twitter posting and how often is deemed okay? Generally see some twitter users who are obvioulsy promoting keyterms for their buisness or company who put in as much as five to ten posts in any one day for the same keyword, or keyphrase. while this looks spammy surely this is liable to be flagged by the search engines? Appreciate any insights on this.
