Categories and rel canonical
-
Hello everyone,
I have a doubt in how to approach this problem.
I have a local business website, and i want to rank this website for our main KW.
So the idea is to rank the main Keyword to the home page www.sitename.com
At the same time we blog every week and one of the categories is the same has the main Keyword. It makes sense because the majority of the blog posts are about it.
In a certain way the homepage and the category page are competing for the same keyword. How can i approach this problem?
Should i use rel canonical in the category page, pointing to the homepage?
Thanks for your help.

While I think keyword cannibalization is a valid concern, it's natural for there to be some overlap when a site is clearly focused on a topic. I hate to over-generalize, but my gut reaction is that the home-page and a single category page aren't a big problem. Sure, they'll compete a little, but we're only talking about two pages, and the home-page is generally already stronger. I think the canonical might be artificial here (these aren't true duplicates, and it could look a bit odd to Google).
I'd think more about how the two pages can co-exist - are their certains aspects of the keyword that one more naturally fits than the other? Could you reflect those in the on-page content/tags (TITLE tag, especially)? If the topic merits an entire site, there almost definitely enough facets to it that two pages can live together perfectly well.
Again, don't to over-generalize, but I think you may be worrying too much about this one. If the pages compete in an undesirable way later, you can always add a canonical, but two pages shouldn't be a big issue.
Unless I'm misunderstanding, do NOT 301-redirect. That's going to kill your category page, as 301s impact human visitors as well as search bots.

I apologize I did not have the opportunity to get back to last night.
Wordpress SEO by YOAST Is a great plug-in. With the plug-in you will not have to worry about
<code>rel="canonical"</code>
<code>The plug-in has all of the built-in so when you go to make </code>
<code>a page will not have to worry about ``` <code>rel="canonical"</code> ``` ``` Might I ask what framework you're using and what host? ```</code>

you definitely do not need to make the home page have a / with the keyword it is not necessary if you optimize site correctly. However if you were to do that and you want to know what the rel=canonical is it would be
<code>however if you can keep from having to do this for your homepage I would do a 301 redirect</code>
<code>that way your site is set the way you want to be and you have a link that is clean. Then do a</code>
<code>a ``` <code>you want the rel=canonical to reflect the page that you want to be the homepage you want to tell Google this is the page I want.</code> ``` ``` So your best cases is www.KeywordBrand.com ``` ``` Sincerely, ``` ``` Thomas ```</code> ```

It's a www.KeywordBrand.com type domain.
And the category is keyword
So we have www.KeywordBrand.com/Keyword
And in theory the Homepage is the same has the category but with an introduction.
In this case what's best ?
a 301 to the homepage, a rel=canonical or not doing nothing?

Are you talking about that exact match domain? If I were to say I don't mean his example.com and my keyword is example?
In order to blog effectively in each blog 300 words or more at least 4 times a week or 20 times a month. It also must be engaging content that keeps people coming back.
I hope it helped you,

Rel=canonical Weebly
My problem is with my website as it says I have duplicate page titles and contents because of a /index.html. It says the duplicate content is due to the fact that my homepage on my website is www.seacandytackle.com but it is also www.seacandytackle.com/index.html because I use weebly. How can I use the tag to fix this? It won't let me do a 301 redirect because it is a home page. How can I fix this? What code would I have to use and which url? Also it says that I have duplicate page content between http://www.seacandytackle.com/index.html and http://www.seacandytackle.comhttp://www.seacandytackle.com but I don't recall having any page that looks like http://www.seacandytackle.com http://www.seacandytackle.com from weebly. How can I fix this issue as well? Thank you for any help. Step by step implementation would be particularly helpful in using the rel= tags to fix these duplicate issues.

Using Rel Nofollow on Duplicate Pages
Hi there, I have a rather large site that has duplicate content on many pages due to how it's being spidered by google. I was hoping I could set the internal link to this page as "nofollow." My question is that I have hundreds of other sites with backlinks to these duplicate content pages.. will this affect me negatively if I tell google not to index the duplicated pages?

Rel=author Verification
I am working to add rel=author markup to my companies website. We have about a dozen editors each posting under their own byline. Because my team does not have full access to the website's code and our lack of "author" pages, we are using the Email Verification Method. We have set up Google Plus Fan pages for each of the editors. Can I use these pages as the verification source - or does it need to be a personal profile. Thanks, Mike

Schema Tags Configuration - Ecommerce Category Pages
I'm semi confident that some schema tags are implemented correctly on our ecommerce category pages.. but I would just like to double check. An example url http://www.freshcargo.co.uk/shoes I have just fixed some errors using the Google rich snippets tool... but the thing I'm not sure about is why the prices are being displayed as seperate items Eg: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freshcargo.co.uk%2Fshoes&view= Thanks in advance

How to structure rel=canonical for a e commerce site
Hello, So I have searched the Q & A , Google, the zen cart forum and at this point I am looking for some one to give a concrete answer on what I should do. There is a lot of different opinions on " rel=canonical" and how to apply it , since there are many other variable in place. I have a zen cart site. I am using the latest 1.3.9 version. The default setting ( seem to me) uses the rel=canonical to point back to the specific link product or category respectively. Most of the time I have two scenarios. 1. Main category ---> Sub category----> Product 2. Main Category----> Product I'll give an example http://www.perfectindesign.com/awards ---main category http://www.perfectindesign.com/awards/acrylic-awards sub category http://www.perfectindesign.com/awards/acrylic-awards/slanted-award product (this example has three sub categories with maybe 12 products in one 4 in the second and 5 in the third) From looking at the source code for each url it the rel=canonical just points back to its own url. I want to avoid competing against my self, for the example above keyword "acrylic awards" so should the use of the re=canonical be changes site wide to have products point back to sub categories when they exist and have products point back to main categories when no sub categories exist? I am very new to seo, specifically eCommerce seo. If you have experience and have done this to a site you manage for a client or your own please advise how to proceed. Also if I'm missing some thing that will give me a better understanding of the bigger seo picture that would be great. Thanks, Yevgeny
