Local Search Not Responding To Optimisation
-
Hi guys / gals.
This is quite rare for me because I normally can put together a good strategy based on the best articles / content etc I have read. However this time I am in a bit of a situation where I dont seem to be able to get results for my Google Local Listings or Google Plus Places page.
The listing is good, has a description, images, url, address etc.
The weakness was a lack of citations, so I got the White Spark Tool and went to work. I have probably built about 20 citations - all pretty good sites, nothing dodgy.
The issue is my listing has gone the wrong way i.e. lost positions. What am I doing wrong here. Is 20 citations just not enough? Is there another ranking factor I am neglecting?
I have digested this : http://www.davidmihm.com/local-search-ranking-factors.shtml
Please advise peeps

Hi Jon,
Situations like this can have very complex causes, so without actually being able to investigate your unique business, my suggestions will need to be broad.
First of all, it's great that you've worked with Darren Shaw's Whitespark tool to begin identifying citations. Please check out Mike Blumenthal's article regarding the time it takes for citations to go into effect:
http://blumenthals.com/blog/2012/09/26/infographic-citations-time-to-live/
And, it's good that you have read through David Mihm's Local Search Ranking Factors, which is the key annual industry report (I'm proud to have been a participant since its inception). The information in the report is exceptional, but it's also a lot to take in. For the sake of brevity, I'm going to excerpt part of a post I published (see: The Rudiments of Local SEO ) recently, summarizing the typical elements of local search rankings:
All Top Rankings Are Not Created Equal
One of the most common questions I receive as a Local SEO is, “How do I get high rankings?” If ‘it depends’ were ever an appropriate answer, this is when. Read this carefully:
The effort and investment you will need to make to achieve high rankings for your local business is completely dependent on the competitiveness of your industry and local geography.
In other words, a personal injury attorney in Dallas, Texas is going to have to make way more effort than a baker in Boonville, California (population: 1,035).
It’s all about the competition. How many competitors you have locally and how much effort they are each making is what dictates the lengths to which you must go to surpass them, if possible.
There is a pretty long list of things your local business can do to establish and promote your visibility on the Internet. What you should do all comes down to how competitive your niche is. David Mihm’s annual Local Search Ranking Factors report is the Local SEO industry’s key survey highlighting the components of high local rankings. Some Local SEOs postulate that there are 200+ factors that go into determining the rankings you receive. Here is a short list of the most basic ones:
- Age and authority of your domain
- Local optimization of your website
- Lack of violations on your local business profiles
- Consistency of data about your business across the web
- Proximity to city centroid
- Number and authority of your citations
- Number and velocity of your reviews
- Social factors
- Number and authority of links
You cannot control factors like the age of your domain or the reviews you receive, but you do have control over other factors like the optimization of your website and the correctness of your local business profiles. Whether you need to make major investments in areas like Social Media and linkbuilding all boils down to how competitive your niche is. Every business is different. Educating yourself or hiring a pro is what will help you discern the amount of effort you need to make to achieve the highest possible visibility.
I'm excerpting this part of my post both in hopes that perhaps you can see something on the list where you realize you can improve what you're doing, and, also, because it speaks to your question as to whether X amount of something is enough.
In other words, 20 citations may be all some businesses need, based on their industry and locale, but they won't be nearly enough for other businesses in different places. What you need to do is based on the competitiveness of your specific situation.
Finally, if rankings for an established business (not a new one) begin to fall off, you must always investigate the possibility of violations, penalties or bugs. Such work typically requires a full audit of the website and all its profiles. There will never be a 'simple' answer when this arises, because there can be several things going wrong and these have to be discovered and, where possible, corrected.
I hope my response is helpful to you and gives you some idea of where to turn your attention. Good luck!

Hi Jon,
You're on the right path. I'd be checking the amount of citations your competitors have, and checking the proximity your competitors are to the centre of the town/city.
In my experience if you're further away from the centre, you can still get a local ranking, just depending on who you are competing with. If more competitors are getting into local, it could be the reason your ranking is dropping.
Also are there any citations that conflict with the address your getting citations for, i.e. another address.

Thanks for the reply Keri.
Its the building industry which does trigger local results in Google.

What industry? Some industries, such as web design, won't have a local listing even for a local business. Sharing a URL would be helpful, but I realize you may not be able to do that in public Q&A.

Community Discussion - Voice Search: A Future to be Shaped
Voice search represents a new challenge for SEOs, certainly, but it may also outline some pretty cool opportunities. In Purna Virji's post about the subject, there's an interesting line of thought raised in the comments: voice search reacting to differences in accent and mispronunciations, and taking those things into account for optimization. Let's just take a minute and think about all the wild possibilities in a hypothetical world where voice search is more prevalent than text queries. Release your imagination from the confines of current reality. cue Twilight Zone music

"&" in search for site:domain.com
Hi, a few days ago we talked to a seo agency. They told us something about the "site:" search, that we hadn't heard before.
SERP Trends | | Sandra_h
As they told us, a search for "site:domain.com/&" would give you the number of relevant pages that Google indexed for your domain. We tested this search with some domains. Lots of the results showed up to 25% less indexed pages, than the search for site:domain.com/ Has anyone heard of this before, or is it just a sales gimmick?0 -

Storing & Analyzing Site Search Phrases
We are adding a JQuery smart search to our site that provides product suggestions as our visitors type. I can create a simple script to store precisely what the visitors are searching for and how they type it. However... I am not sure how to best analyze the data for use. Simply storing the data does not tell me how many times a particular phrase was used. I believe a smart suggestion search tool will skew my results, as it will suggest what I list my product names as in my database rather than what they call it. I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I found a great JQuery script for the suggestion search, but is there anything out there for storing and analyzing the user search input?

How to optimize a site for search engines in India
I am working on a website that is a manufacturing company selling items to companies in the United States, India and some other countries. I already know what keywords I would target in the US but what about India? In the US we optimize our keywords for the Google search engine but in India what search engine is the biggest. I know http://www.google.co.in/ exists but is that the most powerful (most users) for India? Is there a certain language I do research for keywords or should I stick to English keywords? Also if I rank for a national keyword (no location in the phrase) well in the US should it be similar for India?

YouTube, Closed Captions and Search
Hey team, Just wondering if there's anyone out there that may have dabbled with YouTube closed captions and if having them has any effect at all on search results. My theory (unfounded) is that perhaps these files can be crawled (or viewed) by crawlers and/or given priority in search due to having indexible content which defines the content within the clip - which otherwise wouldn't have been known. Now, I have no evidence that this may be the case but wondering if anyone out there may have seen or read something about it. Seems like kind of a cool thing for SE's to do to help promote accessibility across teh web. Thanks guys.
