Benefits to having an HTML sitemap?
-
We are currently migrating our site to a new CMS and in part of this migration I'm getting push-back from my development team regarding the HTML sitemap. We have a very large news site with 10s of thousands of pages. We currently have an HTML sitemap that greatly helps with distributing PR to article pages, but is not geared towards the user. The dev team doesn't see the benefit to recreating the HTML sitemap despite my assurance that we don't want to lose all these internal links since removing 1000s of links could have a negative impact on our Domain Authority.
Should I give in and concede the HTML sitemap since we have an XML one? Or am I right that we don't want to get rid of it?

It sure is, read the link i sent you, it explains why.
This is not a big job, and it is very important

Our html sitemap is broken down into different pages that never contain more than 250 links. All pages are linked via the top nav back to the homepage and to their section/subsection.
The issue I'm having is not that they don't know how to recreate our html sitemap in the new CMS. It's that they don't believe it serves a purpose. And given limited resources, they don't want to work on this in favor of other more crucial work.
My biggest concern is the removal of thousands of internal links. Should I be worried about this?

the xml and html sitemaps are completly different in what they do.
You dont want to have more then 250 links on a page, http://thatsit.com.au/seo/reports/violation/the-page-contains-too-many-hyperlinks
but 250 * 250 is 62500, so with one leverl you can get a lot of pages linked.
all the pages should be linked somehow, and all should link back to your home page and landing pages if posible.
I dont know your developers, but many CMS developers are limited by the capapabilities of the CMS, and expect the customer to bend to those limitations, i cant see why they would not do it if they have the ability.
Have a read of this page for a quick explaination of how Page rank flows.

How much impact does bad html coding really have on SEO?
My client has a site that we are trying to optimise. However the code is really pretty bad. There are 205 errors showing when W3C validating. The >title>, , <keywords> tags are appearing twice. There is truly excessive javascript. And everything has been put in tables.</keywords> How much do you think this is really impacting the opportunity to rank? There has been quite a bit of discussion recently along the lines of is on-page SEO impacting anymore. I just want to be sure before I recommend a whole heap of code changes that could cost her a lot - especially if the impact/return could be miniscule. Should it all be cleaned up? Many thanks

WordPress blog and XML sitemap
I have a friend that just spent 15K on a new site and believe it or not the developer did not incorporate a CMS into the site. If a WP blog is built and the URL is added to the site's XML sitemap, for all intensive purposes, would Google view this URL as part of the site in terms of overall number of links, referring domains etc.? The developer is saying that even if the WP URL is added to the XML sitemap, Google will not view this URL as part of the site domain. I cannot think of another way of adding unique content to the site unless the developer is paid to build new pages every month. If the WP blog is not part of the overall domain, then we're left with the URL simply pointing back to the domain with anchor text and such and not adding to the total number of links and RD... ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks Mozzers!

Video Sitemap Help
MOZ Helpers, Currently our clients videos are hosted on Viemo and that will not change as our client likes the creative/artist vibe and community via Viemo. That being said we need to create a video sitemap. BTW, Our site uses wordpress. When someone in house uploads a video in the future we want them to be able to enter the video title, description, and tags on the video and when they hit "update" the video and information will get added to our video site map. Wistia has this option here http://wistia.com/doc/video-seo , but like I mentioned above our client has all videos via Viemo. I found a Google XML wordpress plugin, but that said it only works for Youtube video's. The Jr. developer is not confident in creating one himself from the Google webmaster instructions and asked me to search for another solution. Check out the attached pic, that is what I am looking for. Is their a plugin or another option where we can use for easy sitemap updating and management for our Viemo videos? Thanks in advance! No Sub-Categories in XML Sitemap
I have a couple of sites using 3dcart, the ecommerce platform. Their tech support recently told me that they do not list sub-categories in the XML sitemap, only products and top-tier categories. Am I the only one that sees a problem with this? Thanks

How to handle sitemap with pages using query strings?
Hi, I'm working to optimize a site that currently has about 5K pages listed in the sitemap. There are not in face this many pages. Part of the problem is that one of the pages is a tool where each sort and filter button produces a query string URL. It seems to me inefficient to have so many items listed that are all really the same page. Not to mention wanting to avoid any duplicate content or low quality issues. How have you found it best to handle this? Should I just noindex each of the links? Canonical links? Should I manually remove the pages from the sitemap? Should I continue as is? Thanks a ton for any input you have!
