Only bad if those 404 pages are resulting from pages in your own site. ( For example, the page that has the 404 is being linked to by another page on yoru site) Not from external sites. That being said, fix them. It's easy. If the page actually doesn't exist then remove them from your sitemap and them remove url like I mentioned before. If the page exists (like example.com/page but the 404 is for example.com/page.html) you can 301 pages or fix your site extensions. I know Joomla has a SEF URL setting.

404 is harming seo?
-
This is an area where I'm not too familiar. I would post a new question and give describe in length what is going on. Do my steps first and if you don't get all of them cleared up then post new question and have a server guy help you. Good Luck!

Host with hostgeter and use joomla for website and Wordpress for blog.
-
Looks like it is a hosting server error. Where do you host and what platform are you on? (html, wordpress, joomla, etc)

A Soft 404 generally means that someone has requested a page that wasn't found by Google. You might want to "Fetch as Google" to find any pages that are being linked to that do not exist. (Go into WMT and under that specific URL, under "Health", select "Fetch as Google") This should give you a list of all the URLs that are returning a 404 or other errors. If you have already done this, make sure that the pages that are showing up in your errors are not still included in your sitemap. (remove them if they are and then remove the URLs from Google by going to Optimization and Remove URLs) You should also make sure that the "preferred URL" has been selected for your site. If you use the www version of your site and the non www has the errors (or vise versa) then this could be the problem too. (You'll have to confirm both versions of your site and then go into configuration, settings then preferred domain). I gave you a lot of work here but these should solve the problem. If not, post any feedback and any solutions you worked on.

Hello Friends, I have a question regarding demotion of sitelinks in Google webmaster tool. Scenario: I have demoted one of the sitelink for my website two months back; still the demoted sitelink has not been removed from the Google search results.May I know any reason, why this page is not getting removed even after demoting from GWT? If we resubmit the same link in demotion tool one more time, will it work? Can anybody help me out with this? Note: Since the validly of demotion exists only for 3 months (90 days), I am concerned about the same.

Google webmaster showing 0 indexed, yet I can see them all them Google search?
I can see them all the pages showing up in Google when i search for my site. But in webmaster tools under the sitemaps section in the indexed pages - the red bar is showing 0 indexed pages, even though they seem to be indexed. Any idea why is this showing like this? I don’t really think it’s that important as the pages are still indexed, but it just seems odd. Please see in the image.

What if 404 Error not possible?
Hi Everyone, I get an 404 error in my page if the URL is simply wrong, but for some parameters, like if a page has been deleted, or has expired, I get an error page indicating that the ID is wrong, but no 404 error. It is for me very difficult to program a function in php that solve the problem and modify the .htaccess with the mod_rewrite. I ask the developer of the system to give a look, but I am not sure if I will get an answer soon. I can control the content of the deleted/expired page, but the URL will be very similar to those that are ok (actually the url could has been fine, but now expired). Thinking of solutions I can set the expired/deleted pages as noindex, would it help to avoid duplicated title/description/content problem? If an user goes to i.e., mywebsite.com/1-article/details.html I can set the head section to noindex if it has expired. Would it be good enough? Other question, is it possible anyhow to set the pages as 404 without having to do it directly in the .htacess, so avoiding the mod_rewrite problems that I am having? Some magical tag in the head section of the page? Many thanks in advance for your help, Best Regards, Daniel

Google indexing page with description
Hello, We rank fairly high for a lot of terms but Google is not indexing our descriptions properly. An example is with "arnold schwarzenegger net worth". http://www.google.ca/search?q=arnold+schwarzenegger+net+worth&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a When we add content, we throw up a placeholder page first. The content gets added with no body content and the page only contains the net worth amount of the celebrity. We then go back through and re-add the descriptions and profile bio shortly after. Will that affect how the pages are getting indexed and is there a way we can get Google to go back to the page and try to index the description so it doesn't just appear as a straight link? Thanks, Alex
