Registering expired domains
-
Hi there,
I've found a good domain that is available for a new project. It has been expired for about 4 months or so. It has a couple of links, with the domain name as an anchor, nothing horrible. Will buying a domain like this be safe from an seo perspective? I'm guessing it would be treated the same as buying a new domain that has never been registered before, Would I be right?

Here is an interesting addition to this folks.
I am reviewing some backlinks on a new clients site and found loads of old blogroll links from foreign language sites. It would seem that these links were paid links as it went but as I dug in I found that in fact, this was a domain that had expired and that these links pointed to the old site.
Now, this domain was unregistered for a while, so it was not a case of dropping the domain and re registering under another name. In fact the site used to be for a Portuguese music band and now is something wildly different.
So, some thoughts on this.
1. tons of these links showed up in webmaster tools so were clearly being acknowledged and still assigned to the domain despite it's being dead for a good while
2. These links all ended up being for the brand of the new business as it matched the old band name but from wildly off topic sites in another language
It is my thought here, that in cases like this, where the domain was dead for a given period of time and the site is clearly not a rehash of the original site but a bricks and mortar business, in a totally different area, in another country that you should be able to use a domain like this even if it had a slightly dodgy past.
But, how would you go about this? Well, my thoughts would be a reconsideration request stating that you are the new owner and giving all the details.
I have nothing to back this up, but my thoughts would be that you should not be penalised here for the past history of a domain. Heck, if I moved into a house where someone was murdered, that does not make me a murderer.
I tried to find some evidence of this and found various mentions, much like the domain reset thing but not much hard evidence but Matt Cutts does detail this here on the back of his domain conference that if you buy a bad domain, then just submit a reconsideration request.
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/trip-report-domain-roundtable-conference/
With the manual review of the domain, it should be fairly easy to see if this is an attempt to shed some old weight or is just an honest acquisition by the 99% of the world that simply would not give the domains history a second thought.
Obviously, there are some caveats here and if the domain was doing something really nasty (porn etc) then it may not be worth it but we do have to balance up good domain with dodgy background vs really crappy domain sometimes so there are a lot of moving parts.
Anyhow, would be interesting to see if anyone has any experience here or thoughts on this.
Also, here is a post detailing how Matt Cutts states domains are reset but... there is little in the way of detail:

Great answers, Thanks Marcus and Irving

I would agree that they are not simply 'reset' hence the need to take a look at the history but... I have seen plenty of discussion relating to this over the years that you will get no credit (good or bad) from an expired domain.
Personally, I would not hang my hat on a domain with a dodgy history but likewise, don't expect to get any positive credit from an expired domain with some OK links either.
If it seems clean, if it has no dodgy backlinks, if it has a safe history on archive.org etc - all of these can help you make a decision.
-
Go to archive.org and take a look at the history of the site and what it used to be.If you see it was a shady site and also has a shady incoming link profile I would avoid it. My guess would be that a lot of really good domain names (short, keyword rich names) were dropped because of penalties.
Dropped domains are not simply "reset" or owners would just let their penalized domain expire and pick it up again under a different name.

Hey Peter
It should, pretty much be like buying a new domain. The only caveat there would be if there was lots of negative equity, bad links etc hung on the back of the domain but if you have had a good solid look then I would not sweat that.
Additionally, when a domain has a new owner, Google claim they 'reset' the domain so any previous link equity, good or bad would be removed. I am not sure how well that works with Penguin etc but again, if they domain looks clean I would not worry about it too much.
Some useful further reading here:

Hope that helps

Moving Shopify from a Sub Domain to the Full Domain
Apologies if this has been asked before. Currently we have a Shopify shop on a subdomain shop.lucybee.com a blog on subdomain blog.lucybee.com and the full domain of course. We'd now like to move everything onto Shopify on the full domain. Therefore the blog rolls into Shopify. We'll manually move pages into Shopify. Any advice or links to resources on how to manage would be gratefully received. Thank you , Jim

Two domains, one unique design?
Hi Mozzers, There are lots of articles on using multiple domains for a company and we all know the story behind that. I have a different question though - I designed and built a really great WordPress theme for my company and it runs on xyz.com and has run on their for well over a year and has decent authority. I would now like to expand my business and offer a different service and I'd like to market the new service on abc.com My question is: If I use unique content on the second domain, but the same WordPress theme, will it have a negative SEO effect on either site? I should mention: I have my reasons for not just using the same domain for both services. I'd love to see what everyone thinks 🙂

Generating a signature and expires in java
Hello, I am developing a tool for my company to get stats from SeoMoz using your API. During development, I have been using the example signature and expires values which are auto-generated for me. Now that testing is complete, my code will need to generate these values. I have been googling looking for a resource demonstrating how to do this using Java, but I have not found a good example. I was hoping that someone at SeoMoz would have a resource or an example that they could share. The email associated with this account belongs to a non-developer, so if a response is provided via email in addition to the forum, sending it to my email would be much appreciated. Thank you, Anthony aruffino@ignitemedia.com

301 Redirect for 3 Domains into 1 New Domain
So I wanted a quick sanity check on the htaccess syntax for migrating 3 domains into 1 new domain. For example, we're migrating 3 sites abc.com, def.com and ghi.com, all into 1 new site on ghi.com. Here's the htaccess we're placing on the root of ghi.com: redirect 301 http://www.abc.com/wines.html http://www.ghi.com/wines redirect 301 http://www.def.com/trade.html http://www.ghi.com/trade

redirect 301 http://www.ghi.com/winery-tours.html http://www.ghi.com/visit/taste On the DNS side of things, we're parking abc.com and def.com on the ghi.com server. I'm not seeing examples of htaccess files for this scenario, and none that use any domain info on the "from" side of the redirect 301 syntax. Any suggestions before we pull the trigger? Thanks!0 -
Parking Domains
I currently have a website domain.com.au, an American branch of the company who own domain.com are currently having their site built and want to forward there domain.com to domain.com.au while construction is taking place. Are there any negative effects to parking the domain.com on my domain.com.au? What is the best method to do this without causing any problems for my domain.com.au?

Keyword in Domain or not?
My on page optimization grade is an "A" with the following factors; Factor Overview <dl class="scoreboard clearfix"> <dt>Critical Factors</dt> <dd>4 / 4</dd> <dt>High Importance Factors</dt> <dd>7 / 7</dd> <dt>Moderate Importance Factors</dt> <dd>8 / 9</dd> <dt>Low Importance Factors</dt> <dd>11 / 11</dd> <dt>Optional Factors</dt> <dd>5 / 5</dd> </dl> The main thing I appear to be missing is keywords in my URL. How truly important is that in today's SEO world and how much time or ranking would be lost if I do not have control to change the external links to my website if I decided to migrate to a keyword relevant url?

Migrating a better performing domain to a less well performing domain
I have a customer who has many domain names and assets but she's wanting to consolidate some of them to help her simplify things for her customers but mostly she wants to build up her website through which she sells products. Grief Reflection - www.griefreflection.com is a personal journal that she's keeping to process the impending death of her husband and it's also linked to her business website which sells healing from grief types of products. Storybooks for Healing - www.storybooksforhealing.com is the website through which she sells workbooks and memory books for people who want to keep the memory of their loved one alive after they've gone. I've setup both of these domains as campaigns and have been looking at the metrics for both. The grief reflection blog out performs the storybooks for healing website. If we merge the two then the Grief Reflection blog would likely become a subdirectory under www.storybooksforhealing.com and be more fully integrated which she thinks will help her visitors not get confused while navigating her website. www.griefreflection.com has 12,637 links while www.storybooksforhealing.com has 1,462. Also, Google has indexed 380 pages of Grief Reflection and only 100 pages for Storybooks for Healing, though that may be because there are fewer pages to index. Grief reflection also has a 4.36 mozRank and 5.30 mozTrust, where Storybooks has 4.13 mozRank and 5.15 mozTrust. Should I counsel her to keep these domains separate? If not, would simply setting up 301 redirects from the www.griefreflection.com domain name to the new subdirectory under www.storybooksforhealing.com be the way to go? Thank you ever so much for any wisdom anyone can provide.

Is my non-www domain working
I believe we may have an issue with out domains and links which is causing our seo to suffer. As far as I'm aware, our non-www domain is being treated as a different domain name. Open Site explorer returns different information for each one. However, when I go to the non-www domain in my browser (I have to force it using the http as otherwise the browser auto inserts the www) my browser returns a page cannot be found. But there may be a chance this is actually an issue with the server we access the internet via at work. I need to establish 100% beyond all doubt that our non-www domain is not working. This is the www: http://www.jetbookingdirect.com/ This is the non-www: http://jetbookingdirect.com/ If it is definitely not working, is the right thing to do to ask my web host to setup a 301 redirect? Further, I thought redirects could only point to one address. If we 301 redirect, if someone accesses a specific page via the non-www domain, does it then take them to the correct page? Also, is it safe to say that our non-www domain not working has affected our SEO, and if we fix it, will it improve things for us? Thank you so much for clarification on this issue.
