Competitor Out Ranks My Site
-
Hi
This is my first question on SEOMoz and I am confused how a competitor can out rank me for a local search term SEO Tamworth. I have a higher Page Authority, Domain Authority, Number of links etc..
Would this be down to the quality of the links to my site or could it be down to the structure. I score an A for SEO on the on page analysis.
Regards
James

Hi James,
I'm glad it helps and excites you going forward with your business.
Check your Analytics data as well - see if there are ways to quickly improve time on site, loading speed, bounce rate, average pages per visit - anything Google gives you could be an insight into what they want you to improve.
If you have any related questions, just ping me to let me know and I'll check back.

Thanks Dana. I love talking about SEO and I type fast so it helps get those thoughts out. Appreciate the comment.

Matt what an excellent response... I am going to look at the links you've provided as well.
Yes it definitely answered my question I am going to get Google +1 onto my page ASAP as that is an easy step.
I need to look at the copy to make sure users stay on the page, I am pretty sure the page is all white hat but may be in my early days I used board line methods which could be impacting it.
I have some good results for my clients and I can get them to do me a nice little testimonial on the good work I have done on possible Google places, Qype and some others which rank well.
Thanks again... (I am actually very excited today after reading this response)

Matt, This was a great response. I especially like that you didn't stop at just offering links but you offered a complete answer in addition to those. That's something that makes this forum great.

Hi James,
I (and others) have answered this a number of times recently so I'm mainly going to link you in.

The basics of it are you are looking at maybe 3 or 4 metrics of maybe 200 that affect SEO. DA and PA matter but they are heavily influenced by other factors such as domain age, page loading speed, time left on registration (surprisingly!), number and quality of anchor text vs branded text, follow vs. nofollow (not in the ways you'd necessarily expect), and again, like 175 other factors. There are always a million "could be" answers.
Let's say the other site had a PR7 SEO site before and it is now offline. Maybe they used it for the "black hat" version of their business. They've seen the light, black hat works less than ever, and they've gone all white hat. Now they 301 that domain over to the new one. You can't "see" the 301 but the effect would be massive. Maybe they have one big client who they managed to ask for and get a big link that isn't on the Moz index but it's showing up in WMT. Maybe their average visitor visits 3 times as many pages as on your site or stays for 10 minutes longer per visit. Those type of metrics make a huge difference in SEO.
I hope that helps answer your question! A huge amount of factors control SEO - social, possibly, the platform of the site, +1s on Google, local citations that may not include a live link so they aren't picked up by Moz.... see the issue in figuring this out?

Sudden disappearance from google organic ranking
I have been ranked in top 5 for all relevant search terms for years. I have been in business for 25 years and am modestly speaking the best in our field. The name of my company is "Alaska Yacht Charters" and suddenly I have disappeared from Google search. Google "alaska yacht charters" and I am nowhere to be found. This all occured within days of my suspending my adwords account which I felt I didn't need because of my great organic ranking. What has happened?Geoff Wilson www.alaskanyachtcharters.com

Multilingual site with untranslated content
We are developing a site that will have several languages. There will be several thousand pages, the default language will be English. Several sections of the site will not be translated at first, so the main content will be in English but navigation/boilerplate will be translated. We have hreflang alternate tags set up for each individual page pointing to each of the other languages, eg in the English version we have: etc In the spanish version, we would point to the french version and the english version etc. My question is, is this sufficient to avoid a duplicate content penalty for google for the untranslated pages? I am aware that from a user perspective, having untranslated content is bad, but in this case it is unavoidable at first.

How is this page ranking?
Hi. A client of mine is being outranked by a competitor whose landing page does not include the keyword within their page content AT ALL. Nor does their URL. Nor do any image alts. And their page title features the keyword in the middle of it, not at the start. Their link profile is not great with directories and the like. They are not socially active.. I am confused! I thought content on a page absolutely had to include the keyword to get ranked for it. Here's the page: www.springsoft.ie, keyword is "water softeners" Any thoughts I would appreciate. Many thanks.Christoffa

"irrelevant pages of a site"
Hi there! Some pages of my site like "contact" or "registration": Should they have a title and a description tag? They are pages that I don't want them to be shown in the SERPs....Could I be penalized by google If I don't do so? The SEOMOZ crawling tool warms me about this issue (to short titles, no meta-description tags....) Many thanks

Creating Duplicate Content on Shopping Sites
I have a client with an eCommerce site that is interested in adding their products to shopping sites. If we use the same information that is on the site currently, will we run into duplicate content issues when those same products & descriptions are published on shopping sites? Is it best practice to rewrite the product title and descriptions for shopping sites to avoid duplicate content issues?

Can Anyone Explain Ranking Drop?!?
Good Morning, I'm hoping someone out there can try and help me figure out what has caused my site to drop from #6 to #10 to #14 and now #19 for my main keyword.. ( My Site is : http://goo.gl/JgK1e ) I am convinced that my site has the best/most unique content in this niche. Every other site uses the same manufacturer descriptions and info and i have added text to certain pages to try and give them more unique content. I believe that my site is very easy to use and navigate, and should be considered a great user experience... Any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks

Should you try to rank for misspelled keywords?
Hi there, 2 part question: Is it best practice to try to rank for misspelled keywords that bring in lots of traffic or should you instead just try to rank for the correct spelling of that keyword and hope that you rank better on the misspelling as an indirect result? E.G. The misspelled keyword "Hamilton island accomodation" is a common misspelling that brings in traffic but we have an "F" rank for that term (obviously because we spell accommodation correctly on our site). We don't want to misspell anything but are there techniques to rank better for misspellings that won't hurt content quality? The On-Page Optimization tool says that our website doesn't rank in the top 50 on Google Aus for "Accomodation Hamilton Island" or "Hamilton Island Accomodation" but when i do a manual search, we actually are the first result. Is this an error with the On-Page optimization tool? Thanks!
