Bi-Lingual Site: Lack of Translated Content & Duplicate Content
-
One of our clients has a blog with an English and Spanish version of every blog post. It's in WordPress and we're using the Q-Translate plugin.
The problem is that my company is publishing blog posts in English only. The client is then responsible for having the piece translated, at which point we can add the translation to the blog.
So the process is working like this:
-
We add the post in English.
-
We literally copy the exact same English content to the Spanish version, to serve as a placeholder until it's translated by the client. (*Question on this below)
-
We give the Spanish page a placeholder title tag, so at least the title tags will not be duplicate in the mean time.
-
We publish. Two pages go live with the exact same content and different title tags.
-
A week or more later, we get the translated version of the post, and add that as the Spanish version, updating the content, links, and meta data.
Our posts typically get indexed very quickly, so I'm worried that this is creating a duplicate content issue. What do you think?
What we're noticing is that growth in search traffic is much flatter than it usually is after the first month of a new client blog.
I'm looking for any suggestions and advice to make this process more successful for the client.
*Would it be better to leave the Spanish page blank? Or add a sentence like: "This post is only available in English" with a link to the English version?
Additionally, if you know of a relatively inexpensive but high-quality translation service that can turn these translations around quicker than my client can, I would love to hear about it.
Thanks!
David

Not knowing the nature of the blog, so mine is simply a "common sense" suggestion:
would not be possible to schedule the posts with few days of anticipation respect the day of their previewed publication, so to to have them translated and so publish both the English and Spanish version at the same time?
Or... isn't it possible for you to take care of the translation of the posts.
Finally... if nothing of these solutions are possible, then I suggest you to put as canonical URL of the Spanish version the URL of the English one, at least until the translated version is not ready. Doing so you won't have any duplicate content issue.

Thanks for the response.
The Spanish page is automatically created when the post is published. There's no way around that.
I agree with your point though. Unless someone has a better suggestion, we'll start adding "this post is only available in English," or something along those lines...in Spanish, of course
Thanks!

"What we're noticing is that growth in search traffic is much flatter than it usually is after the first month of a new client blog."
Given that you are already seeing less progress than what you are used to I would go ahead and put something else on the Spanish page until the content is translated.
Even better would be not to release the Spanish page until it's ready, is that an option you have?

Duplicate content across different domains in different countries?
Hi Guys, We have a 4 sites One in NZ, UK, Canada and Australia. All geo-targeting their respective countries in Google Search Console. The sites are identical. We recently added the same content to all 4 sites. Will this cause duplicate content issues or any issues even though they are in different countries and geo-targeting is set? Cheers.

Duplicate Content Issues :(
I am wondering how we can solve our duplicate content issues. Here is the thing: There are so many ways you can write a description about a used watch. http://beckertime.com/product/mens-rolex-air-king-no-date-stainless-steel-watch-wsilver-dial-5500/ http://beckertime.com/product/mens-rolex-air-king-stainless-steel-date-watch-wblue-dial-5500/ Whats different between these two? The dial color. We have a lot of the same model numbers but with different conditions, dial colors, and bands.. What ideas do you have?

Noindex Valuable duplicate content?
How could duplicate content be valuable and why question no indexing it? My new client has a clever african safari route builder that you can use to plan your safari. The result is 100's of pages that have different routes. Each page inevitably has overlapping content / destination descriptions. see link examples. To the point - I think it is foolish to noindex something like this. But is Google's algo sophisticated enough to not get triggered by something like this? http://isafari.nathab.com/routes/ultimate-tanzania-kenya-uganda-safari-july-november

Duplicate content throughout multiple URLs dilemma
We have a website with lots of categories and there are problems that some subcategories have identical content on them. So, is it enough to just add different text on those problematic subcategories or we need to use "canonical" tag to main category. Same dilemma is with our search system and duplicate content. For example, "/category/sports" URL would have similar to identical content with "/search/sports" and "/search/sports-fitness/" URLs. Ranking factors is important for all different categories and subcategories. Ranking factors is also important for search individual keywords. So, the question is, how to make them somehow unique/different to rank on all those pages well? Would love to hear advices how it can be solved using different methods and how it would affect our rankings. When we actually need to use "canonical" tag and when 301 redirect is better. Thanks!

Migrating a site from a standalone site to a subdivision of large .gov.uk site
The scenario We’ve been asked by a client, a Non-Government Organisation who are being absorbed by a larger government ministry, for help with the SEO of their site. They will be going from a reasonably large standalone site to a small sub-directory on a high authority government site and they want some input on how best to maintain their rankings. They will be going from the Number 1 ranked site in their niche (current site domainRank 59) to being a sub directory on a domainRank 100 site). The current site will remain, but as a members only resource, behind a paywall. I’ve been checking to see the impact that it had on a related site, but that one has put a catch all 302 redirect on it’s pages so is losing the benefit of a it’s historical authority. My thoughts Robust 301 redirect set up to pass as much benefit as possible to the new pages. Focus on rewriting content to promote most effective keywords – would suggest testing of titles, meta descriptions etc but not sure how often they will be able to edit the new site. ‘We have moved’ messaging going out to webmasters of existing linking sites to try to encourage as much revision of linking as possible. Development of link-bait to try and get the new pages seen. Am I going about this the right way? Thanks in advance. Phil

Duplicate content for images
On SEOmoz I am getting duplicate errors for my onsite report. Unfortunately it does not specify what that content is... We are getting these errors for our photo gallery and i am assuming that the reason is some of the photos are listed in multiple categories. Can this be the problem? what else can it be? how can we resolve these issues?
