Google Local Listings dropped in all major keywords

One of our websites had dropped dramatically in all of his major keywords over the past several days. He was ranked in the maps section in google (the old pages not the google plus pages) in the top 3 in his most important keywords and all of a sudden they dropped off the first page completely - not just down one or 2 places.
Not sure what happened and how to fix it.. help please!!!

Did anyone experience a dance where it went down and came back up after a week? I mean, realistically speaking is there really is a chance it would sort out by itself? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Experiencing similar issues from the latest refresh...just have to ride out the dance and see what transpires.

Hi Yes a lot of us in the same boat from this recent update which i hope will sort itself out soon, one day i am getting a message from Google in webmaster tools that the site experiencing high volumes of traffic from quality content & it recommends placing more next thing it drops about 10 pages in Google for several keywords, Like thanks Google we love you to.

Hi Im experienceing the kind of the same thing on Google.dk, Actually I think its a google dance. My ranks at #2 position went to #8
So guess we have to be relaxed and wait for it.. :S

Dear Highwayfive,
The niche was 'title loans' and 'car title loans' in one of the cities in USA. Keywords like title loans CITYNAME / title loan CITYNAME / title loan / title loans.
No errors or issues with GWMT.
Not sure exactly what day... only that it happened sometime withing the last week or so.
What other information would you need?

What niche was this in? Single or long tail keywords? Any geographical qualifiers at all? What country level Google did it happen in? UK Google results are all over the place at the moment. Lots of movement at the end of last week and it appears to be going through a refresh again today.
Have you checked google webmaster tools for any error message or issues?
Do you know when the ranking drop happened? If it was Tuesday - Thursday last week it is likely to have been caught in the latest update.
More information would help in terms of working out the issues.

Unusual Google+ Local listing ranking well
If you search for locksmith Phoenix, this Google+ page is ranked #3 in the local results: https://plus.google.com/117543374216451236579/about?hl=en The phone number is a VOIP number, they don't appear to have many/any citations, no reviews, etc. They've listed the Yelp search results page as their website. Strange. How are they ranking so well? Is Google ranking them well because it's associating them with Yelp.com? Any thoughts?

Apparently now OK to use PO boxes to optimize local search?
I've always stood behind what I thought was Google's policy of not recognizing PO boxes. But it seems like all you have to do now is create one and take 2 seconds to create a low-quality G+ page. The below link is to a screenshot that shows my guy (yay new, high quality site with growing, relevant, authoritative content!) just out of the local results. He's not technically in Athens, so we knew it was an uphill battle. What's annoying though is the low-quality G+ PO box result above him. https://www.diigo.com/item/image/4bxh7/yi1x I know the PO Box result is not great in a vacuum in terms of conversion, but fact is if it's just phone numbers you're after they're at a distinct advantage, with no effort. For my client, we've indicated in G+ that he has a service area that extends into Athens. If Google is now favoring G+ results, I'm wondering if my guy should get a PO box instead? yi1x

How does google decide what city a blog belongs to?
I'm trying to build links from more local blogs at the moment and considering a huge list of blogs that are in my city, of which many do accept guest posts. I'm trying to discover a metric to thin this list down further. Is there any way of finding out if google considers a specific blog to be local to a certain area? What signals does google consider when it is making this analysis? Is it the content? or is it the "about the blog author" section? Thanks, Storwell

Does position in local directories effect google detecting citations?
There are a lot of local directories that i have seen google pull citations from. Quite often i see people putting listings in these directories prefixed by several "A"s, so that they will appear on the first page of the list. Just how deep does google crawl through the pages of these lists? will google actually crawl through all the pages? Some of these directories offer paid listings that appear at the top of the directory. We have been considering purchasing some of these paid positions, so that google would be more likely to pickup our citations. In one case i have noticed a directory: shopincities.com do something that spiked my interest. Basically, if you start clicking through the different pages of a category, the site will block you after 3 or 4 pages in. It serves you an error saying that you are not human. In my mind this is to prevent google from fully crawling their whole list, so that the people who pay for the top positions are picked up, and the people who don't pay, even though their profiles are listed there, never get crawled by google. Hi Interested in your views on this and any references to research on the subject Using Google Books recently I have discovered multiple citations of a web site I produced years ago in a whole load of publication. Really quite touching to find these 10 years afterwards I imagine that this must have a positive effect on search engine listings for this site. The site has really good listings still. Has any research or any announcement been made by Google about this. Pushing this a bit further ; An advertising hoarding has a web site address http:// ... would Google StreetView pick this up and could it be used as a signal too ?
