What's the best strategy for dealing with old ripoff reports that dominate your name rankings?
-
We are just now starting to work on our site optimization. There are a lot of old ripoff reports and other complaints that surface, specifically around our name search. Our competitors use this commonly and our clients come accross regularly. We have made management changes, and real changes in the business since then, but we don't know the best way to get our positive news to replace old negative news. Any ideas? Specifics would be great. Thanks,

How to deal with the complaint directly is a loaded question.
CMC-SD makes valid points... Social media profiles are an easy thing to start off with if you don't already have them. Profiles on websites of professional organization that you belong to can be helpful as well. You also want to build links to these profiles to increase the chance that they show up higher in the SERPs.
Paid advertising on your own brand name can help in a small way in these sense that it will push the organic search results down (assuming your paid ad shows above the organic results), and this measure can oftentimes result in the ripoff report link being pushed below the scroll. If someone is searching on your brand name, most people won't have a need to scroll down.
If it's a really popular ripoff report, there may be links to that individual report that are allowing it to rank higher which will just fuel the fire. You might not be able to get any type of satisfaction from Ripoff Report of the author of the report, but if you use OSE to check out where the links are coming from, there may be an opportunity to contact a webmaster site/owner and convince them to remove the link to the report.

"Always respond (politely, professionally, and accurately) to complaints on ripoff/review sites that allow a response."
I respectively disagree. You'll wind up getting a response from the poster most likely and go back and forth with the person online instead of via email and creating more content on that page and Google will push that page higher in the results! Also, once higher more people see it and might chime in as well.
If you feel you must respond don't write it with any of your keywords or company name!
Try to get other content to push it down, ripoff report will never remove your page unless you sue.

The general idea is to own the top 7-10 results, since most searchers don't click through to page 2. Make sure you have an active brand page on every social network imaginable. The search engines often rank those well for company name searches. If that's not enough to push the bad reviews to page 2, then you should think about PR opportunities. Can you get some neutral or favorable news coverage?
Always respond (politely, professionally, and accurately) to complaints on ripoff/review sites that allow a response. Honestly, an irate, unreasonable complaint that has a good response can make your business look great. I'm a compulsive Yelp user and I see that all the time there. A company that acknowledges its mistakes and bends over backwards to fix those mistakes is a company I'm happy to work with.
Make sure your site has lots of trust signals. If someone is dubious when they get to your site, the BBB logo can nudge them in a more positive direction. Create a page that details your customer service policies -- returns, refunds, etc. You might want to work this content into cart and checkout pages (assuming it's an e-commerce site).

Page optimised and SEO ranking
Hi SEO is new to myself and I'm still trying to get my head round it. My friend and myself run a DJ company in our spare time but we are desperately trying to rank higher to increase our visibility. we have worked hard on our page optimisation and scoring high 90's, we'd love to invest in someone to do it, but simply dont have that kinda cash at the moment. I'm aware that some pages need meta description and alt image text, which is what I'm now working on, but even other sites with lower percentage are ranking higher. is this due to recent changes and google not ranking our pages? Will our ranking improve over time and how long should it be before we see any changes.

Best practices to rank a new website that does not produce much content.
Hi What would be the best practice for ranking a new site .. lets say a business site that does not have a blog to produce regular content in it. Building backlinks are not just the options when these days people are all focused in content marketing. And specially, when you are competing against big competitors. Big competitors are of course getting their contents published on bigger sites since they are already established. No one will talk about you when you are new in the market. And you still need to bring up your site to people and SEO is the only option for that. What would you suggest ? Thanks

Should I remove spaces from my brand name?
I'm looking for some second opinions on this one. In talking with another SEO, he is of the opinion that if my company name is two words like Crazy Man, I should write some news release that have my brand combined as Crazyman because it is a variant of the brand name. He claims that Google does not look at my brand as Crazy Man, but as one word and in Google's mind Crazyman as one word is my brand. What do you all think?

Best practice for heading structures on Ecommerce homepages
I have been doing some research into the heading structures of some of the top selling online stores in the UK. One thing that has come to my attention is that many of them do not have H1 elements on their homepage. I am presuming that because they are targeting their own brand on the homepage that they feel no need to have a H1?? Examples are: http://www.boohoo.com/ http://chainreactioncycles.com/ http://www.jdsports.co.uk/home Some of them even use the logo as a H1 such as http://www.missguided.co.uk/ Does anyone think that using the logo as a H1 would have any negative effect from a search engine perspective? Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Using mlm and 'scammy' websites to identify brand/reputation management opportunities
I think this almost warrants a youmoz post, but I was wondering if anyone has used MLM or 'shady' industry companies to see where they place their reputation/brand links to dominate the first 2-3 pages of google for things like 'company name + scam' 'company name + reviews'. On a side note what is your opinion of a company that goes to great lengths to create a very strong push to control those keywords? Would you recommend your clients dominate the first 2-3 pages with 'honest review about company x' and 'the truth about company x' fakeditorials? Do you guys think people see right through them. Take any MLM..for instance legal shield scam (not my company, but an MLM that I am very wary of) as professionals what do you think of their reputation management build out......what do you think consumers would see when they read this? is there such a thing as going to far to refute false claims and building sponsored reviews? I'm personally against doing sponsored reviews and spamming with them, but maybe I am naive.
