Migrating a site to Wordpress
-
I've recently been converting our old website to a wordpress based website and been working on the new version of the site on a subdomain.
Now at the stage when I am getting ready to let the site go live and just wondering exactly how to do this so I have minimal downtime?
Looking in the wordpress control panel there is the setting to enter the address of the site if you want it to be different from the directory it has been installed within - is this a good idea (i.e. is it stable if I do this? good for seo, bad for seo or makes no difference?)?
or should I manually install everything in the root myself (if I do this is there a way to direct people to the temp version of the site on the subdomain?
Any tips, do and don't s would be appreciated as I want to do this right!

Cheers Dan,
Once it's live I will be double, triple, quadruple checking everything! Paranoid I will miss something or do something wrong!
Planning on doing it when I've a lot of time to spare just to be on safe side in case things go wrong!
I shall give the plugin a go as well I think.
Thanks

Hey There
Paul's right, it's going to be impossible to suggest exactly how to do this, since there's several nuanced steps that could be involved.
This is by far the best resource to follow if you're doing it by hand.
There are some plugins and third party sites like Manage WP (which I used once with success) that can help too.
Once the WordPress site is up and live, you'll want to crawl it to look for broken links. The biggest thing is making sure all the old URLs redirect to the new ones.
Hope that helps!

Thanks both, I'll probably try the redirecting of a folder but I shall test it all first on a new folder just to be on the safe side - to be honest the testing on a different folder never even crossed my mind (why did I not think of that!)
Thank you!

If your unfamiliar with your hosting console you may want to test the process before you actually follow through with it. Or plan to do it super early or super late in the day to minimize downtime if you hit a snag. There are so many different hosting consoles and possibilities that are impossible to cover here.
I'm going to make the assumption that your host will allow you to redirect a domain to a different folder.
so: www.example.com -points to -> /htdocs
and dev.example.com -points to -> /dev
In the past I typically just use the wordpress console to make the change under the general settings to the correct domain(note this will break the wordpress for the moment on the development domain dev.example.com). I then redirect my primary URL(www.example.com) to the folder I'm using for the development domain.
IF your host doesn't allow this, there are other options besides changing the data at the database level within PHPmyadmin. If your comfortable with PHPMyAdmin then go for it. Either way it wouldn't hurt to setup dev2.example.com and follow thru the process just to test things out and know the steps before you break anything.
Good Luck!

Okay so let say this:
You have installed your new site at:
- Open phpmyadmin (or any other MySql editor) and locate the link above inside the option table. IMGHERE
- Edit that row to match your domain (installation folder EX: www.example.com)
- Copy all the content how is to the new location (root)
- Go to THIS LINK and learn how to edit your wp-config file
- And you are done
Depending how fast you can act and how fast your server is, this steps can be made under 30 seconds.

Existing URL structure and how to handle new pages before migration
Hi there! Currently, our site uses underscores "_" within the url structure. We are moving to Wordpress soon (the site is currently static html) but it will be a couple of months before the migration. Here is an example of the current structure: www.oldsitestructure.com/about_us/success_stories/custom_vinyl_banners When we do change, our url structure will have hyphen's "-" to separate terms, so the preferred new structure will be: www.oldsitestructure.com/about-us/success-stories/custom-vinyl-banners The entire site (with the exception of our Wordpress blog) currently uses the old structure. We have about 10 - 15 pages we will add before our migration, my question is: Should we use the preferred url structure starting NOW or stick with the old one? And set up 301 redirects are part of the migration process? Many thanks!

Site as one page - SEO implications
We may be inheriting a site and will be asked to do SEO for it. We will have control over the development of the site, so this structure is what it is. My question is - how significant of an impact do you think this is going to have and can you think of any workarounds that may help? Basically, the user experience of the site will feel similar to multiple pages. However, this site will, in essence be one page and pull various content through javascript from different locations. I have not seen the site yet (and believe it is still in development), but this is how it has been explained to me. Any thoughts? My first thought was to add a blog to add page depth to the site and expand the content. Any other thoughts are welcome and appreciated. Thanks. (I know this is limited information, I'm sorry. It's just about all I have to work with right now, and I was a little concerned and was hoping for a second opinion)

HTML to Wordpress - a good idea?
I have an HTML site that is 12 yrs. old and ranks well in Google. I want the more user friendly Wordpress format to update content myself. Should I, and how do I make the transition. Thanks.

How do I optimize a site designed to be one scrolling page of content?
Our website uses section ID's as its navigation so all the content is on one page. When you click About Us, the page scrolls down to About Us. Products, the page scrolls to Products section, and etc. I am getting crawl errors for meta descriptions but will this go away once the main domain has this info? We just added the meta keywords and description to the header and since the navigation sections use the same page, I assume it will correct the errors. Any other advice on optimizing for site designs like ours would be great. www.theicecubekit.com is the site. Thanks,

On site SEO opinions
Hi all, I have been testing different configurations for my on-site SEO for a while now and I think I am pretty much there. However it is always nice to know what other SEO's think about my keyword density and usage. My site is http://www.tomlondonmagic.com I am curious as to what you think regarding landing page content, whether you need lots or text or little text? I have just removed links in the text as I feel I want to keep as much juice on my landing page as possible. Thanks all!

Sites went from page 1 to page 40 + in results
Hello all We are looking for any insight we can get as to why all (except 1) of our sites were effected very badly in the rankings by Google since the Panda updates. Several of our sites londonescape.com dublinescape.com and prague, paris, florence, delhi, dubai and a few others (all escape.com urls) have had major drop in their rankings. LondonEscape.net (now.com (changed after rank drop) ), was ranked between 4th & 6th but is now down around 400th and DelhiEscape.net and MunichEscape.com were both number 1 for several years for our main key words We also had two Stay sites number 1 , AmsterdamStay and NewYorkstay both .com ranked number 1 for years , NewYork has dropped to 10th place so far the Amsterdam site has not been effected. We are not really sure what we did wrong. MunichEscape and DelhiEcape should never have been page 1 sites ) just 5 pages and a click thru to main site WorldEscape) but we never did anything to make them number 1. London, NewYork and Amsterdam sites have had regular new content added, all is checked to make sure its original. **Since the rankings drop ** LondonEscape.com site We have redirected the.net to the .com url Added a mountain of new articles and content Redesigned the site / script Got a fair few links removed from sites, any with multiple links to us. A few I have not managed yet to get taken down. So far no result in increased rankings. We contacted Google but they informed us we have NOT had a manual ban imposed on us, we received NO mails from Google informing us we had done anything wrong. We were hoping it would be a 6 month ban but we are way past that now. Anyone any ideas ?

Wordpress drop down menu issue...
While I am tweaking my current site with getting rid of my footer links, my site will not allow a drop down menu for my service area parent page. It will do a drop down menu for any other tab. Could not find anything in a google search besides just link to parent for drop down... Any ideas?
