Duplicate Content Issues with Forum
-
Hi Everyone,
I just signed up last night and received the crawl stats for my site (ShapeFit.com). Since April of 2011, my site has been severely impacted by Google's Panda and Penguin algorithm updates and we have lost about 80% of our traffic during that time. I have been trying to follow the guidelines provided by Google to fix the issues and help recover but nothing seems to be working. The majority of my time has been invested in trying to add content to "thin" pages on the site and filing DMCA notices for copyright infringement issues. Since this work has not produced any noticeable recovery, I decided to focus my attention on removing bad backlinks and this is how I found SEOmoz.
My question is about duplicate content. The crawl diagnostics showed 6,000 errors for duplicate page content and the same for duplicate page title. After reviewing the details, it looks like almost every page is from the forum (shapefit.com/forum). What's the best way to resolve these issues? Should I completely block the "forum" folder from being indexed by Google or is there something I can do within the forum software to fix this (I use phpBB)?
I really appreciate any feedback that would help fix these issues so the site can hopefully start recovering from Panda/Penguin.
Thank you,
Kris

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your feedback. In regards to thin content, do you know if there is a certain minimum requirement of textual content that should be on a page? I have read a few articles that recommend having at least 300 words for each page. Do you know if there any validity to this?
I appreciate your input about the forum issues. I will look into adding/updating the robots file to block everything but the main posts.
What are your thoughts on removing bad backlinks and how critical is this for Panda/Pengiun recovery? There are so many areas to work on but only so many hours in the day
Thanks,
Kris

Kris,
The ideal scenario is to eliminate or consolidate content that exists on extremely thin pages on a site. When it comes to forums, consolidation is a near impossibility technically and likely to cause problems for usability. As a result of those challenges, the best course of action would to either eliminate the content entirely or block the forums from indexation via robots.txt file.
If there is any potential for any of the forum content being of value from a search engine perspective, it would likely be a case where you'd want to keep the core forum posts indexable but block the member pages.
Unfortunately there's no one answer and no true way to gauge the impact on any action you choose without actually taking that action and then waiting to see what happens.

Duplicate 'meta title' issue (AMP & NON-AMP Pages)
how to fix duplicate meta title issue in amp and non-amp pages? example.com
On-Page Optimization | | 21centuryweb
example.com/amp We have set the 'meta title' in desktop version & we don't want to change the title for AMP page as we have more than 10K pages on the website. ----As per SEMRUSH Tool---- ABOUT THIS ISSUE It is a bad idea to duplicate your title tag content in your first-level header. If your page’s <title>and <h1> tags match, the latter may appear over-optimized to search engines. Also, using the same content in titles and headers means a lost opportunity to incorporate other relevant keywords for your page.</p> <p><strong>HOW TO FIX IT</strong></p> <p>Try to create different content for your <title> and <h1> tags.<br /><br />this is what they are recommending, for the above issue we have asked our team to create unique meta and post title for desktop version but what about AMP page?<br /><br />Please help!</p></title>0 -
Duplicate Content
I'm currently working on a site that sells appliances. Currently, there are thousands of "issues" with this site, many of them dealing with duplicate content. Now, the product pages can be viewed in "List" or "Grid" format. As Lists, they have very little in the way of content. My understanding is that the duplicate content arises from different URLs going to the same site. For instance, the site might have a different URL when told to display 9 items than when told to display 15. This could then be solved by inserting rel = canonical. Is there a way to take a site and get a list of all possible duplicates? This would be much easier than slogging through every iteration of the options and copying down the URLs. Also, is there anything I might be missing in terms of why there is duplicate content? Thank you.

Content in forum signatures being spidered, does it matter?
Hello, first post here, just started with SEOmoz so hope it's relevant. Searched a fair bit on this without getting a good answer either way so interested to get some opinions. The core of the site I run is a forum dedicated to collecting, for the sake of argument let's say cars. A good percentage of the users have signatures which list their collection, for example 1968 Car A - 1987 Car B - 1998 Car D and so on.... These signatures lists can be 20 items or more, some hotlink the signautres back to the relevant post on the forum, some not. The signatures show on every post on which the user makes. What I'm noting is a) SEOMoz is reporting a LOT of links on every forum page, due mainly to these signatures I guess. and of more interest b) The content of the signatures is being spidered. So for example of you search for '1968 Car A' you might get a couple of good results directly relevant to '1968 Car A' from my site, but you also get a lot of other non-relevant threads as results because the user just happens to have posted on them. Obviously this is much more apparent on the site google search. So what is the best approach? Leave as is? Hide the signatures from the BOTs? Another approach?

How much constitutes duplicate content in your opinion?
Mornin' In your experience, how much constitutes duplicate content? A sentence, a paragraph, half a page, etc? What about quotes - are they considered duplications, too, if there aren't quotation marks? Over the years, the client has been a bit bad in taking a paragraph from here, a sentence from there, and coupling it all together as daily news on their site. I'm now in the middle of a purge. Oh boy! All hail originality.
