What happens to (external) linkjuice after you redirect a page?
-
Hope everybody is having a good day:).
I was wondering what happens to the external link juice of a page when you redirect it to a new (and improved) url?
For instance www.example.com/lowvolumesword/highvolumeword/ 301 --> www.example.com/highvolumeword/
Will the /highvolumeword/ page lose a lot of (external) linkjuice?
Is it best to change the external links to the new url manually or leave them as is and let the 301 redirect take care of it?
Is it possible to say that no more than x% of your linkjuice will be passed through via a 301?
I hope im making sense here and am looking forward to your reaction.
Thanks in advance,
Lawrence -
Hi All,
Mini update here.
Matt Cutts posted a video exactly about this issue on YouTube yesterday.
Basically he says 'PageRank' loss via 301's is a MYTH :D.
In my opinion this sounds like great news to me.
I assume i won't have to change all my external links to a new url just to save +- 10% juice

Hi Takeshi Young,
Very intersting information from pretty much the most credible source.
So if i leave the links as is i'd have a little loss of linkjuice (10/20%), If i want 100% juice to be passed along i would have to change the links targetting url to the new ones.
Does Google get 'upset' if you change existing external links? I can imagine that the 'bots' don't like existing links changing much and could consider it spam tactics.

Matt Cutts from Google has said himself that 301s do not pass all their link value:

As to exactly how much value is lost, only a Google engineer would know. From my experience, it's not a very big loss, probably only 10-20% at most.

Hey Dan,
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you 100%.
I wonder if there is anyone else who has another opinion or knows of case studies that have tested what we are thinking.
Got a lot of migration ahead of me with quite a bit of linkbuilding on the 'old' url's, so definitely want to do whats best in thiscase

HI Lawrence
As far as i understand it aprox 90% of the 'juice' will be preserved/passed on to the new URL
If able to change any of the external links to the new one quickly and easily then why not, to get the 100%
Thats my take on it anyway
All Best
Dan

Unsolved Are links from staff profile pages no longer good for SEO?
Hey there, We run a small site that lists lawyers and we have an opportunity to ask the lawyers to display a 'badge' on their own website's staff page, linked back to the page on our site that they are listed on. Initially I thought this would be good link building (i.e. the lawyer's own staff/profile pages on their website linking to our site where they are listed = a highly relevant link). I was less concerned about the authority of the law firm's sites, though these will range from sometimes low-ish to medium. I just assumed that Google would see the value in the lawyer wanting to link to our site where they are listed. However, our SEO has said that these days Google doesn't give much/any value to these types of links from individual staff pages. His advice was to try and get the badge added to one of their service pages (or their About page) which will be unlikely as the badge is person-specific. I thought I'd ask if this was everyone else's experience regarding Google not valuing links from individual staff pages? Thanks for you help 🙂

Does an external link to an image file on my site help my SEO?
I found a few websites that are displaying images from my site. Curiously, they have also linked these images to the source image file on my website. I found these because Moz showed these sites in my list of backlinks. I assume that means it impacts my Domain Authority. But does this actually help me in search engines since it's not linking to a page on my site?

Redirecting broken backlink to my site
Hello guys, I found an expired domain with inbound links from 41 different root domains, almost all of them from relevant sources. I have 2 ideas in my mind: A) I am thinking about buying this expired domain and place a 301 redirect to a post in my blog who talks about a similar subject.Relevance: let's say the content of the expired domain is about "horses wallpapers" and the content of my site is about "horse transport". Not the same, but a post in my blog could talk about "top 10 horse wallpapers". Do you see what I mean? B) Contact all the webmasters with broken links, alert them and expect they are nice and place a nice link to the post in my blog talking about "top 10 horse wallpapers". What do you think? Should I take A or B? Any other idea? I added a picture with the Domain Rank of the broken links 🙂 Thanks a lot !!! Luis V1LZBC3

Make a new page or more links to existing page for 2nd keyword?
We have a page optimized for 'blue widgets'. We rank in organic spot #3 or 4 for that (moves around from week to week). Fairly happy with that. We have another derivative term 'blue widgets small' (example, but it's same format: <original phrase="">+ <single word="">) where we currently rank #6 organic in Google when people search on the 3 word phrase.</single></original> We'd like to rank higher than #6 for the 3 word phrase. Should we: (1) Build a bunch of links with anchor text equal to the 3 word phrase and point to the existing page (which is optimized on-page for the first 2 of the 3 words) or (2) Make a new page optimized for the 3 word phrase and then start building links to it with anchor text equal to the 3 words (and non-cannibalizing variants of the 3 words)? The 2 word phrase is pretty competitive and it has taken us months to get that page to be #3 or 4 organic for that phrase. The 3 word phrase is much less competitive and we don't think it would take that long to make a dedicated page rank higher than #6 for the 3 words. Suggestions? Thanks.

What % Page Metrics & Social, What % Links?
It seems that a lot of the focus of SEOs, especially whitehat SEOs like SEOMoz and Distilled has shifted a lot more towards improving page metrics (bounce, return rate, etc) and social metrics. I'm curious - And of course, I'm just asking for guesses - But what percent of ranking do you think is page metrics, social metrics and other non-link based metrics and what percent do you think are link based metrics?

301 Redirect Domains with old links
I came across a nice discovery of about 20 old domain names that each have many root domains and a bit of DA. I want to know the best way to utilize them without any type of penalty. Currently, (as of an hour ago) I am 301 redirecting all of them to the most relative pages on a single domain. Will i get the majority of the link juice from the domains? I'm excited to see what will happen here. Thanks in advance, Daniel
