What am I doing wrong?
-
I am trying to do my own SEO for my small photography business. I have been with SEOMOZ for about a week now. My ranking before was about the 4th page for "Houston Wedding Photographer"
I have found places to add my link for back-links. I fixed the duplicate page content errors... I had Google re-crawl my site the other day because I felt like I had done a significant job improving the rank. My website has now slipped to the 5th page.
What in the hell am I doing wrong?

As far as rewriting goes, you want to pick one version of your site, either www or non-www, and stick with that so that, when you get links, they point to the correct address. When you don't rewrite your URLs, it looks to search engines like there are actually 2 websites, the www version and non-www version, that display duplicate content. I'm guessing that you selected the www version in Google Webmaster Tools because that is the only one it displays. Regarding fixing it, your domain registrar and host will sometimes have a simple setting for that actually so that you don't have to do a mod_rewrite. If you don't find anything with your registrar/host about it, you might be best served by posting a new question here about it.
Regarding keywords, that's a tough one, but like many SEO issues, we'd like to think the rules are hard and fast, but they're not. You're not supposed to be able to get by with keyword stuffing – as your competitors apparently are – but it happens. There might be a newer version of this video, but in 2009, Matt Cutts talked about the fact that Google doesn't use keywords as a search ranking factor.

Thank you. I had no Idea such an awesome page existed. I was looking for the directories the hard way.
-
Thank you for the help.
I log out to see where I am listed, if I don't, the top 4 to 5 posts in the search are from either my Google places reviews or my Google Page.
Can you explain the rewriting URL's part? How do I fix that? Is that part of the coding at the top (before the )?
I know that Keywords can help. I drastically reduced them (there are now only 4 (or 9 if you break up each word) I thought having a few would still be okay. I looked at the top listed sites and they are using their keywords to repeat "Houston wedding photographer" over and over and over again... yet they are listed at the top?
-
Thanks. One of the (apparently stupid) SEO self help sites told me to do it that way. It was a bitch to do by hand, and a bitch to fix. But I fixed it.
-
Thank you. I have a Google Places listing, and a Google Page. I use Dreamweaver and when I space things, it uses whatever word code I was last using. Thanks for pointing that out. I am fixing it.

not enough content on homepage and alt tag keyword stuffing

While you're link building, I would also check out your local directories and make sure that your address/link/phone number is updated on all of them. You can check out GetListed.org... an SEOMoz bought company to see if your information is accurate everywhere.

Hey Kelly,
First congratulations on taking your first steps towards optimizing your site.
The main thing holding you back(and every other photographer I ever worked with) is content. Your site has plenty of beautiful images, but you have almost no real content/words on your site.
Google does not see images at all. They will see alt tags if you add that to the code of your images.
Also there are some real issues with the code of your site. I would highly encourage you to learn a little more about how your site is built. Theres several sections on your site that use blank heading tags(h1, h2, h3) to space things out. Heading tags are a key indicator to Google about what your page is about. Using them to create spacers could be a real problem.
Last look at who is ranking number 1 for your key word "Houston Wedding Photographers".
All of the results at the top are actually Google Places listings and not just websites. Maybe the key to more business is as simple as creating a Google Places listing!

It can take a while for a site to settle into its place in the rankings. Are you logged out, set as being in Houston, etc when you're doing your searches? I logged out and went into private browsing and didn't see your site at all in the rankings.
Does WMT say that it's indexed all of your pages? I'm seeing 39 pages and quite a lot more images. While you're at it, you might as well submit your sitemap to Bing.
Fwiw, you appear to have 8 H1 tags on your homepage. Generally, you want to have just one if you can help it. Also, I don't see a canonical tag, which you might want to put in place, and you're not rewriting your URLs. If I type photogbykelly.com into my address bar, your site returns photogbykelly.com. If I type www.photogbykelly.com, your site returns www.photogbykelly.com. You should be rewriting your URLs to either the www or non-www version so that, for example, I get back www.photogbykelly.com when I only type in photogbykelly.com.
The last few things that come to mind are that... you're using meta keywords on your pages. Those don't help your rankings, but they can harm your rankings if you appear to be keyword stuffing. On your homepage, it looks like stuffing. And, you have some odd pages like photogbykelly.com/backlinks.html that make it look like maybe you're reciprocal linking or something like that?

Wrong URLs indexed, Failing To Rank Anywhere
I’m struggling with a client website that's massively failing to rank. It was published in Nov/Dec last year - not optimised or ranking for anything, it's about 20 pages. I came onboard recently, and 5-6 weeks ago we added new content, did the on-page and finally changed from the non-www to the www version in htaccess and WP settings (while setting www as preferred in Search Console). We then did a press release and since then, have acquired about 4 partial match contextual links on good websites (before this, it had virtually none, save for social profiles etc.) I should note that just before we added the (about 50%) new content and optimised, my developer accidentally published the dev site of the old version of the site and it got indexed. He immediately added it correctly to robots.txt, and I assumed it would therefore drop out of the index fairly quickly and we need not be concerned. Now it's about 6 weeks later, and we’re still not ranking anywhere for our chosen keywords. The keywords are around “egg freezing,” so only moderate competition. We’re not even ranking for our brand name, which is 4 words long and pretty unique. We were ranking in the top 30 for this until yesterday, but it was the press release page on the old (non-www) URL! I was convinced we must have a duplicate content issue after realising the dev site was still indexed, so last week, we went into Search Console to remove all of the dev URLs manually from the index. The next day, they were all removed, and we suddenly began ranking (~83) for “freezing your eggs,” one of our keywords! This seemed unlikely to be a coincidence, but once again, the positive sign was dampened by the fact it was non-www page that was ranking, which made me wonder why the non-www pages were still even indexed. When I do site:oursite.com, for example, both non-www and www URLs are still showing up…. Can someone with more experience than me tell me whether I need to give up on this site, or what I could do to find out if I do? I feel like I may be wasting the client’s money here by building links to a site that could be under a very weird penalty 😕

301'd an important, ranking page to the wrong new page, any recourse?
Our 1,300 page site conversion from static html to Wordpress platform went flawlessly with the exception of 1 significant issue....an old, important, highly ranking page was 301 redirected to the wrong corresponding new page. The page it was redirected to is about a similar product, but not the same. This was an oversight that slipped through. It was brought to my attention when I noticed this new page was still holding the old page's rankings but the bounce rate skyrocketed (clearly because the content on the wrong new page was not relevant). Once identified, we cleaned up the redirect. My fear is that all the juice built up on the old .html page that ranked well has now permanently been passed to an irrelevant, insignificant page. -Is there any way to clean up this mistake? -Is there anything I can do to assist Google in associating the correct 'new' page with correct 'old' page after the wrong redirect was initially set-up? -Am I going to have to start from scratch with the new page in terms of trust, backlinks, etc. since google already noted the redirect? Thanks!

Wrong pages ranking for key terms
Hi, I have a website that was rebuilt and redesigned earlier this year, and it's struggling to rank. The problem is that the wrong pages are ranking for the key terms. For example, there is a page for 'Loft Conversions Essex' but the page that's ranking is actually the FAQ page (which doesn't mention the word 'Essex' at all). I have been through all of the usual items, and none of them seem to apply: The landing pages have been properly optimised (not overly so), while the pages that rank only contain the terms within the menu (the link that goes to the actual landing page) We thought it may be a redirect issue since the site was a bit of a mess before the rebuild, so we removed all of the redirects and resubmitted the htaccess file but that hasn't helped Internal anchor text is relevant There aren't a huge number of external links to the old site pages, and many of these pages didn't exist at all so I don't think that's an issue Most of the pages were built at the same time so there's no real reason why one would have more authority than another There are no canonicals interfering with these pages I can't really canonical these since we do want the pages to rank, it's just that they're all ranking for the wrong thing (so the SERPs are a lot lower than they should be). Most of these pages are pretty new, as I said, so while we have tried smaller content changes I don't think a full refresh will really help. To make it even weirder, the pages that rank for each term change regularly but it's never the right page. Help! EDIT: Thanks for the responses everyone!

Wrong page getting ranked
Hi all, we have product category pages on our ecommerce web site and we also produce blog content (such as buyers guides, setup guides etc) to help with ranking and give our site some good quality, unique content. However we are sometimes finding that the buyers guide / blog content gets ranked by Google over our product category page. I'm hoping, if I give an example or two, some one smart out there may be able to point me in the right direction as to how we can avoid this and get the product category page ranked instead? You will see from my examples we are linking internally using the keywords from the buyers guides to the product category pages in order to show the most important page to Google for these keywords and are trying to structure the product category pages as well as possible to make it the most optimized page for the term. Example: Keyword "twin dvd player"... product category page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/dvd/portable-dvd-player-car/twin-dvd-player/ ... blog page actually getting ranked for this keyword: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/advice-center/dual-screen-and-twin-dvd-player-explained/ Keyword "site radio".... product category page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/audio/radio/site-radio/ .... blog buyer guide page actually getting ranked for keyword: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/advice-center/Site-radio-buying-guide/ Any help / pointers appreciated. Thanks.

Where are we going wrong?
I've been going over all the top ranking factors, running my site through Moz analytics and page graders, just researching the heck out of this, and I'm trying to figure out where we're going wrong. The site is www.imageworkscreative.com - and we're being outranked by newer sites. We need to rank for terms like web design va, custom web design, web design firm, etc. We publish blog updates on average once a week, and promote those via social media and a few syndication services. We were using a link builder who wasn't following our instructions regarding competitor backlinks ... pretty sure her work ended up hurting more than it helped. I'd like to hire a consultant or high-quality link builder to help get things going, for us and for our clients. Any recommendations would be much appreciated, as well as any advice for us in terms of overall issues that need to be resolved. Thanks!

I can't help but think something is wrong with my SEO
So we re-launched our site about a month ago, and ever since we've seen a dramatic drop in search results (probably due to some errors that were made) when changing servers and permalink structure. But, I can't help but think something else is at play here. When we write something, I can check 24 hours later, and if I copy the Title verbatim, but we don't always show up in SERPs. In fact, I looked at a post today, and the meta description showing is not the same, but when I check the source code, it's right. What shows up in Google: http://d.pr/i/jGJg What's actually in the source code: http://d.pr/i/p4s8 Why is this happening? Website is The Tech Block

High ranked web site on Google GONE - but webspam team says nothing wrong
We purchased several weeks ago a .org blog that has been highly ranked (number 1 on competetive keywords) for at least a year. it is a blog We moved the blog to our IP range and it went from #1 on top keyword and first page on another to the home page just gone. Now there was a secondary page indexed that stayed on page 5 for the keyword the home page was ranked #1 but the home page (which was high ranked page is just gone) We wrote the Google Webmaster team for reconsideration but they wrote back and said the web spam team said nothing wrong. A contact of mine who works for one of the most well known SEO compaines in the world says because we moved it the site could disappear for a week or so but the "algos would realize" and return it to that top spot soon. Does anyone know anything about moving a site to new IP and issues that can result?

Am I Doing This Wrong? Ecommerce SEO
I ran my site through the SEOMoz On-Page Optimization tool and one of the problems noted was "Keyword Self-Cannibalization" in this case, it was stating I was using the keyword "Board Games" too much. Site in question: http://theboardgamers.co.uk/ The problem being is that every product link contains the word "Board Game" - Which makes sense, but I guess it may look spammy to the SEO world. Would it be best to remove the "board game" part from each internal link and only leave it in the URL structure?
