Competitors using unsavoury methods of link building. How to combat?
-
A lot of my competitors are using a lot of unsavoury/old-fashioned SEO methods to build links but are actually doing really well from it.
A few different competitors are buying links in directories, using blogspam comments, forum posts, buying links in other places.
The problem is, they all seem to be doing very well with it! What I've always been taught is that these methods are out and they could actually harm you - yet I haven't seen this happen to my competitors.
Should I be using these spammy methods too or just concentrate on building quality content and high quality link building?

Your competitors will need to pay to renew those links, you won't.
Your competitors spend $200 on a link for a year, you spend $200 on 10 quality articles.
After a year they have to renew the same link for another $200, you have the option to generate another 10 articles, either way your original 10 articles are still active.

I too see some of our competitors using the same tactics and beating us in SERPs. Google has been finger wagging about this for some time now, but on the ground the reality is very different.
I think it comes down to your strategy, do you want to win short term and build a brand relatively quickly or are you in it for the long haul? Short term gain Vs long term pain? The SEO community in general relies on most participants be conscientious with an unwritten set of 'good' behaviours Vs 'bad' behaviours constantly being touted as some form of social movement. This is all very well and fairly inclusive... but the rules of the game as far as I can see don't necessarily translate through in practise.
So, it's essentially down to you and what you want to do. Right answers.... there are very few certainties when it comes to SEO as it's a constantly shifting landscape. Personally I prefer to play by the rules because it's in my nature, others may be more commercially orientated depending on their goals and so they employ a different set of tactics.
Either way good luck!

Don't modify a good plan of attack because you see others doing something that you know will cause problems.
Hang in there. Work harder.
If these guys are beating you then it might be a good idea to get a site review to see if there is anything that you are doing that is holding you back or anything that you could be doing that will increase your effectiveness. It is never a bad time to reassess your methods.

SEO Links in Footer?
Hi, One of my clients uses a pretty powerful SEO tool, won't mention the name. They now have a "link equity" tool, which they are using on a lot of their client's sites, which include tons of fortune 500 companies. It involves add footer links to your site that change based on the content of the page they are on. The machine learning tries to figure out the most related pages and links to them with the heading tag of that page as the anchor text. Initially this sounds very spammy to me. But then, it seems a lot like "related products" tools that many companies use. The goal for this tool is to build up internal linking, especially for deeper pages on their site. They have over 10,000 currently. What are everyone's thoughts on this strategy?

Link Getting Deleted for Few Days
If a link gets deleted for few days and re-appears... Will Google treat it as a "new link" or give it the same old link-age.

Do dead/inactive links matter?
In cleaning up the backlink profile for my parent's website, I've come across quite a few dead links. For instance, the links in the comments here: http://www.islanddefjam.com/artist/news_single.aspx?nid=4726&artistID=7290 Do I need to worry about these links? I assume if the links are no longer active, and hence not showing up in webmaster or moz reports, I can probably ignore them, but I'm wondering if I should try and get them removed regardless? I've read that google is increasingly taking into account references (i.e. website mentions that are not links) and I don't know if inactive spam links might leave a bad impression of a website. Am I being overly paranoid? I imagine disavowing them would be pointless as you can't attach a nofollow tag to an inactive link.

Do Wikipedia links add value?
Do Wikipedia pages/links add any value to your website and SEO? We are not an advertiser or seller of products, whereas we help people with planning so say I add an external link from an established page relevant to our service, will we get penalised by Wikipedia? Or is it worth setting up a page about our company, similar to say - the BBC with an external link? Thanks!

Bot or Virus Creating Bad Links?
Hey Everyone, We are getting ready to engage a client for some potential marketing/SEO so in preparing for this have ran the site through OpenSiteExplorer. The site is relatively new and there are only two links under the inbound links section. They are relevant and add value, no issues there. Here is where it get strange. When I look under the 'Just Discovered' section there are many (hundreds) new links going back about a month. Virtually all of them have the anchor text 'Louis Vuitton outlet'. Now the client swears he has not engaged anyone for black hat SEO, so wondering who could possibly be creating these links. They do sell some Louis Vuitton items on the site, so I'm wondering if it is possible that some spam bot has picked up the site and began to spam the web with links to the clients site. So far today, 50 or so new links have been created with said anchor text and the clients root URL all on very poor quality, some foreign blog sites. Would like to find out why this is happening and put a stop to it for obvious reasons. Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be a bot? Or maybe someone with an axe to grind against the client? Anyone could be doing this on their own, but just seems strange for it to be happening to a new site that does not even rank highly at the moment. Any advice or info is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Is a directory like this white hat? Useful?
This is one of my competitor's backlinks: http://bit.ly/mMPhmn Prices for inclusion on this page go from $50 for 6 months to $300 for a permanent listing. Do most of you guys do paid directories like this for your SEO Clients? My gut is telling me to run away...but I don't want to miss a good opportunity if I should be taking it.
