Multiple domains?
-
I do own a domain for my business right now, and would have a few questions, regarding the increase or traffic for my website and getting new business
1. Is it worth to purchase multiple domains, keyword search relevant, to my business?
2. If so how is the best way to use it? : have them redirect to my own website? a specific type of redirect? do I make a separate website for each of them?
3. for ex if the keyword is " tile and grout". I figured would be best to own "tileandgrout.com". How about "tile-and-grout.com"?
thank you in advance

I own a lot of EMDs and the keywords that they represent range from very easy to extremely difficult.
EMDs will still rank extremely well if you have a nicely optimized website with a few pages that is in the google index and the level of competition is very low. You don't need a lot of links, you just need to get it in the index. Lots of people say that this does not work in google any more but I can tell you for a fact that it does. I have #1 rankings with sites like this.
This will work until some competition arrives. When competition arrives the value of the EMD is tiny compared to the value of links and other assets. Then you have to earn your rankings just like any other website.
Should you use EMDs as a business model? Probably not. If you have a website of reasonable strength you can simply add a nicely optimized page to it and quickly rank above an EMD in a low-competition SERP. I do it to EMD competitors all of the time.
I see lots of people coming into forums crying... "That spammer with an EMD is beating me Wah!" I chuckle at these because I have EMDs that get their asses kicked all of the time. If an EMD is above you that webmaster has probably earned it unless there is no competition in your SERP and you have a website with zero strength. Get off of your butt and get working. You don't deserve to rank. The EMD is a tiny advantage, if you are pissed off about it then just call the guy up and offer to buy it from him. Then, a week after you take over the domain another weak site will move above you and you will be cryin' again.

Additionally David, do your best to step out of the mindset that there may be some sort of shortcuts that you can use to get more traffic. For the new website owner, building traffic is an exercise in being a solid business person. You want to understand what you need to do to keep your shop in order (on-page seo), then learn all you can about your customers and competitors--who they are, where they are online what they like, and who they follow socially. Follow them, give them a reason to follow you by interacting with them and demonstrating to them why your company is the right one for their job..
Minimally, several hours per week, every week, spent on those activities will pay off for you and your one domain--and think about it, if that's what it takes to get one domain off the ground, would you have time for two? What working person does?

Hi David,
Exact Match Domain (EMD) names are currently being ignored by Google. A while back Matt Cutts (the leader of the spam team at Google) said it should have the weight people give it. Watch this video for more information.
In September 2012 EMD update first came into effect to prevent poor quality sites from ranking well simply because they had words that match search terms in their domain names. When a fresh EMD Update happens, sites that have improved their content may regain good rankings. New sites with poor content — or those previously missed by EMD — may get caught. In addition, “false positives” may get released. Our latest news about the EMD Update is below.
As Thmoas and Daniel said, focus on the quality of your content, usability (which is the biggest next thing in SEO) and accessibility. Ensure that your website is all about your customers and the product, NOT about search engines.
Ensure you help search engines and users find the useful content on your website, relate to relevant pages using internal linking, breadcrumb and relevant keyword optimisation between linked pages. Ensure you dont have orphan pages and watch your Analytics system to know which pages are being viewed most, have most time on site, referred, these are the pages users love. If you see high bounce rate and exit rate, or drop outs from some pages, these pages need some serious improvements.
And never buy traffic or pay to include your links in linking schemes, focus more on PR for external links and probably editorials. Partner with blogs and webmasters to host articles with relevant and high quality content on their blogs.
I hope this can help.
Regards,
Issa

Hi David,
Forget Exact Match Domains. Firstly, they no longer have the appeal (as they are not as easy to rank nowadays). More than one domain means that you need to work twice or multiple times as hard in order to get them to rank.
You are best investing the time in your site. Generate more content, run a news section or a blog. Guest post on like sites with engaging topics in your industry. Engage in forums, be known as the leader in your industry. One strong site is better than many small sites. You don't see apple run a site for tablets OR phones OR laptops.
Hope this helps,
Dan

I would strongly suggest that you focus on your one domain and do not worry about doing things like purchasing domains with exact match names. it would be one thing if you already had an exact match domain however I guess you don't.
that is not a bad thing. Google has devalued exact match domains greatly in the recent past and will continue to do so in my belief.
Focus on building your brand and not on a get to the top quick scheme.
Don't buy domains spend the time and money on building content that is relevant and engaging that way when people come to your site they will be interested and want to purchase instead of clicking away when they go to whatever your exact match domain name is and realize that that's not what they want.
I hope I've been of help,
Tom

High Quality Domains and what to do with them
Hi, I rus a travel photography business. The primary function of the website is to sell prints, though I blog about my travels on the same domain name as well as a few pieces of content that are helpful to users interested in some of the places I travel to. I do okay with it, but obviously, I am always looking for a way to increase visibility and sales of prints. I own a couple of high quality keyword domain names, that I've been trying to figure out what to do with. One of which is for a city that my prints of my photography are probably best known for. The domains I'm really trying to decide what to do with are basically a www.citystatephotography.com and www.citystatephotos.com, where the city and state are the ones I'm targeting. The question is, what do I do with it? I've seen various ideas from other photographers that have various levels of success. Here are the options I'm considering: Just redirect it to the photo gallery of photos that I'm trying to rank highly for. From what I read on various blogs, this doesn't really do much of anything, but maybe I've read wrong? Create a website or microsite with some quality content related to the city that also links back to my photography website on various places and possibly once in the navigation. I do have quality content I could put up that would be helpful to people from the city besides just trying to get sales. But there's always a chance this will cannibalize my original domain without helping sales, I assume? Spam my photo galleries across two domains. Most of my photography galleries would stay on my main domain that I already run, but the photo galleries that are key to that city would be hosted on that citystatephotography.com domain name. I've seen a photographer from Colorado do quite well with this method. (www.imagesofrmnp.com and www.morninglight.us) He's heavily known for his images of Rocky Mountain National Park and that seems to be his main brand, but all of his non-RMNP travel photography goes on the other site. The two sites look almost identical, though they link back and forth fairly extensively. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of duplicate content either. I've considered this method, but I'm nervous I'll kill what I've already built up if this were to fail. Do nothing with the domains. Seems wasteful, as these domains, particularly the citystatephotography.com domain seems useful in some way. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Do links to a domain that re-directs to my domain pass link equity?
Hi guys. We've recently taken control of a third-party site and we're going to set up a domain re-direct so any traffic comes to our site. With any existing links that the third-party site has, will these pass link equity to our main site through the redirect? Thanks, Paul

Multiple 301 Redirects for the Same Page
Hi Mozzers, What happens if I have a trail of 301 redirects for the same page? For example,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Travis-W
SiteA.com/10 --> SiteA.com/11 --> SiteA.com/13 --> SiteA.com/14 I know I lose a little bit of link juice by 301 redirecting.
The question is, would the link juice look like this for the example above? 100% --> 90% --> 81% -->72.9%
Or just 100% -----------------------------------------> 90% Does this link juice refer to juice from inbound links or links between internal pages on my site? Thanks!0 -
Do exact matter domain not matter anymore?
I need to buy a new domain and Im wondering if I should be looking at a exact matching domain or simply just some nice name. Did the last change from Google simply just lessen the importance of the exact matching domain or completely kill the importance of them?

Removed Duplicate Domains, What Should I Expect?
Hi All, So I have been at my current company for 5 months now. I quickly realized that they previously bought multiple domains. The domains do make sense (they are mostly our products, etc). However they did not just redirect to our main website, instead, they were a direct copy of our main website. They had it setup so that when we made changes to our main website, www.mainwebsite.com, that the same exact change went to www.productwebsite.com. Basically we had about 7 of the SAME EXACT websites with a different root domain. So I explained to them the problem with having duplicate content on the web and how we are basically just self cannibalizing our online efforts. This problem is fixed now and I am just wondering if anybody has seen the results before? To tell you the truth we already do pretty well SEO-wise. Just wondering if this will make it even better? I am assuming that this will also take a little while to take effect? Thanks! Pat

Virtual Domains and Duplicate Content
So I work for an organization that uses virtual domains. Basically, we have all our sites on one domain and then these sites can also be shown at a different URL. Example: sub.agencysite.com/store sub.brandsite.com/store Now the problem comes up often when we move the site to a brand's URL versus hosting the site on our URL, we end up with duplicate content. Now for god knows what damn reason, I currently cannot get my dev team to implement 301's but they will implement 302's. (Dont ask) I also am left with not being able to change the robots.txt file for our site. They say if we allowed people to go in a change this stuff it would be too messy and somebody would accidentally block a site that was not supposed to be blocked on our domain. (We are apparently incapable toddlers) Now I have an old site, sub.agencysite.com/store ranking for my terms while the new site is not showing up. So I am left with this question: If I want to get the new site ranking what is the best methodology? I am thinking of doing a 1:1 mapping of all pages and set up 302 redirects from the old to the new and then making the canonical tags on the old to reflect the new. My only thing here is how will Google actually view this setup? I mean on one hand I am saying
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | DRSearchEngOpt
"Hey, Googs, this is just a temp thing." and on the other I am saying "Hey, Googs, give all the weight to this page, got it? Graci!" So with my limited abilities, can anybody provide me a best case scenario?0 -
Buying domains with prior age and or PR
Is there any value to buying a domain for its PR or age? Or is it no better than a brand new unregistered domain name? On the flip side, is there any potential danger of buying domains with PR and age?

Is this Domain Change Worthwhile?
Hi- I have a client who has setup a new criminal law firm in the last few months. The URL is like: www.somenamelawyers.com ['somename' is the same # characters as their company name] I have run a successful AdWords a/c for them and many of the big traffic and conversion keywords include 'criminal lawyers'. From a SEO perspective, the long goal is to get traffic for 'criminal lawyers' and keywords that phrase match that. So I am considering migrating them to www.somenamecriminallawyers.com. I have researched this issue and understand the technicalities involved in moving. My question here is 'is this change worthwhile'. I think it is worthwhile because it really is in a sense rebranding them to be more clearly in a specific business domain, ie. criminal law. Also, they are a new outfit so they don't have a lot of backlinks yet. And mainly, they will get a SEO boost to their core keywords 'criminal lawyers'. Thanks in advance for your thoughts- Jules
