Main page redirect affecting search results?
-
Question.... A recent change was made to our page www.BGU.edu by a marketing person. So now when you type in www.BGU.edu it actually redirects to a different page www.BGU.edu/inquiry
This is a really bad idea isn't it? I do not know enough about SEO to know a lot, and just joined SEOmoz but do I need to tell the admin to change it back?

Thank-you!

Ah that's ok I'm newbie myself..
When you go to a webpage the website returns a code to let the browser or Google, or who ever is browsing what the current status of the webpage is. Normally you go to a webpage and you are returned a 200, meaning everything is ok, but you dont need to know it all the time so the browser hides it.
If you try and find a page that is not there the server returns a 404 code, often people designing websites try and redirect you to a customised 404 code/error page, so that they can try and retain you, but in the background the server is returning a 404 code to tell the browser it couldn't find the page it wanted.
With a 301 redirect, what we do is force who ever is trying to access that page to go to another page and tell them that its permanent by telling the server to issue a 301 code.
This tells Google that the page is moved to a new location and should be considered the same page for future purposes. Its kinda like going to the post office to tell them you have moved address and to forward all your mail on.
Now you normally do a 301 redirect using a .htaccess file, but that's a whole other can of worms
Although saying all that I'd assumed it was a 301 but I wanted to give you a tool to check them out yourself and tested it. The website is showing a 302 code which is a temporary redirect. Very bad... but then you new you that
Use this http://web-sniffer.net/ and look mid way down under the yellow bar..

Very, very bad idea. To make matters even worse, they've used a 302-redirect, which further compromises the ability of the home page to hold it's rank.
Yes, you need to have the admin change it back, as there doesn't seem to have been any compelling reason for the change. The one bright side is that, because the 302 redirect was used, it will be easier to change it back.

What is the 301? Sorry for being a newbie!
-
Agreed very bad, looks really odd too.
What if you don't have an inquiry but to gain an overall impression of the site?
You could do the same thing with a jquery overlay or just a box for inquiries, but I always think the home page should encapsulate the business in an instant then give you direction for more resources. Why not have a prominent link to the inquiry, or generate lead pages on some of you keywords etc....
Adam
p.s. also all your links to the home page are going to leak link juice with the 301 in place.

Thank-you! This is a very small Christian grad school, who is ministry focused not tech focused. I am working with them in social media (which is my area of expertise) but the webpage is such a mess I have to find some solutions there to to make the social media pay off...
Thank-you for making my case clearly.
Fortunatly the IT person is very responsive to my suggestions, even though they do not appear to have much SEO or page management experience.
I have always understood that not only is it rude, but that now they are not getting the main index page indexed... A massive Faux Pas!

This is a really bad idea isn't it? In my opinion, it is a very bad idea.
It's best to keep the site locked up so that the marketing people can't monkey with it.
Universities are really bad about managing websites. They change department URLs from egol.edu/chemistry to chemistry.egol.edu and then to chem.egol.edu and then to egol.edu/chem
Somebody gets the idea that they need to change the URLs so they then run wild with it.
Then, thousands of high schools, other universities and other webmasters have linked to these various URLs, which have been changed at whim without redirects. It is really rude to the people who have linked to you and it shows that the university webteam do not plan and don't know what they are doing and are inconsiderate about the people who are willing to send them traffic.
I have a website that links to lots of university resources and we have to check those links every year because university marketing monkeys keep changing them. I am betting that 20 to 30% of the URLs must be edited every year.
Sorry for the rant.

Ecommerce Category Pages
First, let's define the terminology for the various types of ecommerce pages. The terminology differs from organization to organization: Product Description Pages (PDPs): These pages have a single product, pricing, an "add to cart" button, reviews, and a product description. Product Listing Pages (PLPs): These are product category/subcategory pages that have product image links and text links to Product Description Pages (PDPs). Category Pages: These pages have subcategory image and text links to subcategory pages. No product images are displayed Hybrid Category Pages: these pages combine sub-Category Images and text at the top of the page and product listings below. Our CMS currently does not allow us to create hybrids. This conversation revolves primarily around mobile. Our ecommerce team is having discussions around the appropriate use of PLPs vs Category pages. After doing a quick audit of the mobile sites of some top ecommerce players, there is definitely a trend to use Category Pages at the top of the category and sub-category hierarchy and use PLPs at the very bottom. The logic from a usability perspective is to allow visitors to navigate a site without ever using the hamburger navigation. ex: Baby (Category Page) => Car Seats (Category Page) => Convertible Car Seats (PLP) The sites I audited all had hamburger menus. A visitor would navigate from a home page image for "Baby," an image on the "Baby" page to "Car Seats", and an image on the "Car Seats" page to the Convertible Car Seats page. At that point, they would be able to shop for "Convertible Car Seats" on a PLP. This appears to be excellent UX and easy to use navigation. Theoretically, good for SEO as well. In short, category and subcategory pages are being used as navigation to allow visitors to easily navigate to the bottom of the hierarchy and shop on the most narrow page in the hierarchy. Much easier to use than a hamburger menu, but it does entail more clicks. The discussion revolves around allowing users to shop for product at a higher level in the taxonomy. For example, what if a visitor wants to shop all Car Seats? In the above taxonomy, we are precluding users from shopping in this manner. There is no "Car Seats" PLP. Our CMS has the ability to create both a Category Page and a PLP for "Car Seats". We could theoretically place an image on the "Car Seats" category page for "View All Car Seats", and allow users to click to a "Car Seats" PLP. None of the major ecommerce players I've audited are adding a PLP option higher up in the hierarchy. That doesn't mean that it's not good UX. Problems: From an SEO perspective, having a Category Page and a PLP for "Car Seats" would cause cannibalization - they would be competing for the same keywords. I am skeptical that canonicals would work. The pages are not near duplicate content. One page has category images, the other has product images. We could place content blocks on the page to make them more similar. We could noindex the PLP, but that's a waste of internal link juice. Need advice: Will canonicals work in this situation? Should we trash this idea entirely? Does adding a PLP add value or confusion? Is noindex a good idea? Is there an option to target keyword variations with the PLP? Is there another solution?

WordPress Category page title h1 or h2
Hi friends, I know this is a minor technical change, but we are in an extremely competitive market and I don't want to have any points against us. On our WordPress Category pages i.e. http://www.domain.com/category/tegory-title%/ I looked at the code behind the the Title of the category page, which is "Browsing: %Category Title%" The code is an h2. I look at the posts in the category archive below, and those are also h2's. The theme preview is here and you can click on Entertainment - Reviews to see exactly what I'm referring to - http://themeforest.net/item/smartmag-responsive-retina-wordpress-magazine/full_screen_preview/6652608 I changed the code for the "Browsing: %Category Title%" to h1, which I believe is more consistent and standard formatting. 1. Is this a correct technical on-page optimization? 2. Would it be beneficial to remove "Browsing"?

Should Our Mobile Responsive Version of our Ecommerce Site include the on Page content to Help with Rankings
Hello All, We are soon to launch our new redesigned website along with a mobile responsive version but i have noticed we currently don't include the on page Content we have on the mobile version which we have on the desktop version to help with rankings etc. I am not sure how google does mobile research with regards to rankings. We have designed our responsive version to be as user friendly as possible at the expense of having to much clutter/content but I am wondering now , if we will rank on mobile if all our on page content isn't present. Just wondered if we should include it at the bottom of the pages with say a "Read more" extension to help avoid clutter? Any advice greatly appreciated thanks Pete

What To Do When Improved Site Speed & Layout Result In Higher Bounce Rates & Lower Time On Site
We launched a new Bootstrap 3.0 site template 2 weeks ago. The site loads 5x faster and has a much improved layout (utilizing most common above the fold recommendations ). It's only been two weeks, but our bounce rate has increased 5-10% and our avg time on site decreased by 10-18%. Here is the page for one of our most common products so you can see the general experience: <a>http://www.jwsuretybonds.com/surety-bonds/commercial-bonds/auto_dealer_bond.htm</a> (here is the old version: <a>http://199.119.123.134/surety-bonds/commercial-bonds/auto_dealer_bond.htm</a>) We spent two months implementing the new design and working on a speedy load time. We had anticipated a drastic improvement, not mild downturn in user behavior. I'm hopeful that the Analytics metrics aren't showing the true picture on the keywords we care about (can't see anymore due to "Not Provided" listed as most keywords now. Argh!) and perhaps some of the more important/accurate user behavior metrics that we can't see are improving. We know our industry and our clients needs VERY well. We THOUGHT our new content/layout was perfect so it will be tough for us to try to make improvements at this point. We believe our best plan of action now is to add more content on each page and A/B test it along with other subtle changes. The problem is that our new content is very concise and hits on all of the primary visitor intentions, so additions of content could be redundant and making concise answers more "fluffy", which is what we tried to get away from. What do you think? Is there reason for panic? What would your plan of attack be if your "sure shot" new design didn't provide the improvements you "knew" it would? 🙂

Do pull quotes affect SEO positively or negatively?
I like the design element of a pull quote to ad interest and highlight an important point. If I use an exact quote from the page in a pull quote on that page, does that negatively affect SEO as duplicate content? Are there formatting or tagging methods that could help pull quotes to boost SEO? For clarity, by "pull quote" I mean a stylized bit of text that floats on a page in such a way that the body text wraps around it. It is actual text (not text embedded in a graphic) but it behaves like an image with text wrapping around it. Here's an example (in red on the right side): http://www.21ct.com/resources/news-room/21ct-announces-its-latest-us-patent-for-advancing-big-data-security/

Need advice on diplaying content for Search
Hi every body, I am doing landing page redesign(s). Does any body know or can refer a content carousel that can rotate video and pictures? The "site with images" search option result is a compelling reason to showcase pictures if your space competeiveness (showroom, merchandise, etc) can be improved with a strong image presence. here is my main landing page http://www.shearerpainting.com I know there is alot of stuff, and confusing call to action, but I am looking for strategies to clean it up, clear fous on action (get bid, learn more), but allow users to see that they can dig for more content.
