New to SEO - Best Practice Example
-
I am new to the SEO world and I have been using the tools SEOMoz provides. I was doing some research and happen to find this website:
http://www.futuresimple.com/lead-tracking-software/
I noticed that their sitemap does not contain all of the links that are located at the bottom of the page. Also when you click one of the page on the bottom that you are taken to a landing page and it forces you to their software page.
Community feedback - do you think this is a good techique to do something like this or can you please provide me a some other good examples for a niche/smaller website?
Thank you.

Everett,
That is a great answer and specifically what I am looking for. The main reason I asked that question is because I working on a niche type site they are where there are 5-8 long tail keywords which people search for the product I am working with.
I was thinking of creating a 2-3 long tail keyword and have specific page focused with that specific long-tail keyword exactly like they have done.
Again - thank you for the feedback and great help!!!!

Hello Dsmolinksi,
It is very common for sites to link to pages from the footer that they don't include in the header navigation. Typically the header navigation is reserved for the most important pages. Also, the landing page you want to show a visitor who searches for "lead tracking software" may not be the same page you want to send a visitor to if they arrived on your home page, and some sites that are designed specifically for online lead generation conversions may want to keep the visual aspect very simple so they can funnel visitors exactly where they want them to go in order to improve conversion rates. Using footer links allows them to link to their topic-specific content without adding complexity to the site's primary navigation.
I do not see that they are doing anything wrong since the content on those pages seems to be well-written, unique, not overoptimized and somewhat useful. Where you need to be careful is making thin "doorway" pages, which is similar to this tactic but taken to a level of useless absurdity where you have a page optimized for slight keyword variations or geographic areas that doesn't provide the visitor with unique, useful information but is solely designed to capture search traffic for that specific keyword variant.
The site above is making full use of keyword optimized landing pages for search engine traffic, but in my opinion I don't think they have crossed the line into "doorway" page territory.

Chris,
I totally understand what you are saying. I was just trying to understand their reasoning on they setup their website with the various landing pages and the links on the bottom of the page and no top links on those landing pages.

Let me make it simple and better. You are talking about too many on page links and if I make it really specific too many footer links.Populating any area with large number of links is not a great idea but menus and footers sum on what you have on your site.
Check out this site. This is one of the biggest Article site in the world.
They have around 200+ onpage links.Too many onpage links are not allowed but around 100-125 is fine.Right now the site have 40-60 so its not bad.Make sure you do not make it go that big so that the Google start believing these guys are manipulating to have too many internal links.Make sure you do not cross the limit I mentioned above.Right now its fine.

Everett,
The main website http://www.futuresimple.com has a couple of top navigation links. The footer contains a number of links on the bottom right that when you click on them that they do not have header links.
Those pages do rank very well for the keywords they are looking to rank. For example:
"lead tracking software" http://www.futuresimple.com/lead-tracking-software/
My Question is: By having not have links on the top of the page and exact targeted keywords really help rankings or is this just how they choose to setup their SEO landing pages?

Hello Denny,
I am afraid I don't completely understand your question. I do not get "forced" anywhere from the footer links. I arrive at the URL I would expect to arrive at when I click on them. Were you being redirected to somewhere else? Or were you just commenting on the fact that all of these pages have a similar design with the "Sign up now" image and link on the right side of the page?
It is not uncommon for html sitemaps to only include popular pages. Also, these sitemaps may not get updated when new pages are added. It does not appear to me that they are trying to hide anything

Are new pages treated similar to new domains with respect to ranking?
Hello...I'm hoping to get some advice or guidance regarding the following. My website has gone from a 30 page site about loans, to a 500 page site covering a much wider range of products such as mortgages and other more specific loan related pages. All the new pages were made live at the same time, and I've been through GWT tools to add pages with in the Google fetch and most have been indexed fine. My question is, how should I expect Google to treat all of these new pages? The site has changed massively and many of the new pages are at pages 3-4 for their key terms. Will Google treat these new pages in the same way it may a new domain, e.g. it could be potenitally a couple of months before the pages start to rank better? I appreciate that the terms are very competitive. Thanks!

Creating A Scholarship For SEO
My client is a Law Firm just outside of Tampa, and I am trying to get her keyword phrase: "Tampa Car Accident Attorney" in the top 3. One of the strategies I want to use is to create a scholarship for "Tampa Area Students and how a car accident impacted their life" or "Tampa Area Students and how they think they can decrease car accidents." (that's still be worked on). Once the scholarship is created, I want to put it on our Tampa Car Accident Attorney page, and get other companies to link to that page. My question is what links should we go after? Because that will tailor it to who we give the scholarship to. We could give it to a University of South Florida student, and get one .edu link. We could do the same thing for the University of Tampa, or Stetson Law School, but we'd only be getting one link from each of them. If we set it up for high schoolers, we can get more links from the community and schools, but I'm not sure high school .edu links matter all that much. Is 10 high school .edu links as important as 1 college .edu link? I don't know. If anyone has had an experience with this or any insights, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

SEO and PR
In the home improvement industry (windows, doors and conservatories) what is the best approach with regard to PR in order to build quality links. It's a lot easier if you are selling a computer, mirror, widget etc as you have an actual product that you can send magazines, bloggers, journalists to review/feature for inclusion in their publications. It's a lot more difficult if you are a builder, double glazing installer etc to get this PR coverage as you have nothing to send them to review, feature etc. What approach do the experts on the forum think that would work best in the double glazing industry to secure coverage across publications both online and offline?

Ex-Googler: “To Please Google With Your SEO, Forget About SEO”
Lets discuss, Ex-Googler (Search Quality/Webspam team) talking about SEO. http://searchengineland.com/ex-googler-to-please-google-with-your-seo-forget-about-seo-136800 The bit that got me thinking was 'title tag over optimisation' so what we looking at, shorter title tags with a max of 2 keywords? And the PR quote, does relevance come above PR/DA/PA? Thoughts?

SEO value in Twitter bit.ly links?
When I use opensiteexplorer for my webpage www.novelaspect.com and go under the "linking domains" tab, there is only 1 Twitter link that shows up. However, my competitors have multiple Twitter links. I've posted many many times on Twitter and linked the posts back to our website, but I've always used bitly to shorten the URLs. Is this what's keeping me from getting more backlinks from Twitter (which has a high domain authority!)? I haven't been able to find a straight answer anywhere yet, so I assumed using bitly is ok. Could it also be that opensiteexplorer takes months to register links? I seem to be missing many external links...In fact, the number of external links have dropped by around 10,000 in the past 2 months, and I know I didn't remove any links. Thanks!

Best link building activities to increase velocity.
I'm running my own web based company selling security software. I'm a one man band and do the programming, web design, SEO etc. all myself. I've taken a very white hat approach so far and spend all my time writing guest posts and getting them published on tech blogs (I get 3-5 links per week doing this). The only tool I use is Buzzstream and I've been doing this for about 6 months now. I'm starting to see a few results but whenever I look at my competitors I see they have links from thousands of root domains. I feel like I need to increase my link building velocity with a new activity which will yield a much greater number of links than I am able to create using my guest posting strategy. I'm not keen to start spamming article directories or any other short term activity. I dedicate about 8 hours per week to SEO and I could afford to spend around $700 per month if necessary. Any help would be much appreciated.
