Two Different IP Addresses For Different Parts Of One Site Okay?
-
I have a client who has a site in Drupal and, for reasons too complicated to go iinto, wants to host part of the site in Wordpress from a different server.
So it would be like oldsiteexample.com being in Drupal and the new oldsiteexample.com/marketing and everything below /marketing being in wordpress on a different server, obviously with a different IP address.
Are there SEO considerations in this? The existing oldsiteexample.com has a lot of authority/rank/traffic and don't want to inadvertently risk that.
Thanks... Darcy

Dear Darcy,
If I detected that you do not have a friend with this problem and maybe it's you? Just player and comment I do not want to lose all of the authority? I don't blame you I would not want to lose rank and authority for anything. However WordPress is a better platform for search engines way it is designed is easier for the Google bot crawl and if you build the site the correct way with static links via a CDN maybe take a look at zippykid.com they build in a true enterprise level content delivery network not one but two CDN's with Enterprise DynECT DNS for only $25 a month and 100,000 page views they are spectacular. At $25 a month total a lot of stuff for such little money on a enterprise level firewall load balanced private cloud. I would have a look at them. Your site will be much faster With WordPress if you host it correctly and if you use a plug-in like WordPress Seo by Yoast On with the CDM to make every blink 100% static and what Google bought craves. Please do heed this warning do not use a free theme it is not a wise idea and 99.99% of the time. I would suggest going to WordPress.org then going to commercial some of my personal suggestions studio press number one Woo themes is a great platform and there are many many more like thesis or hybrid. Color labs project is also pretty awesome but with Genesis / studio press you can never go wrong. I challenge you to do this. Take your existing website and running on pingdom run it through all three servers and if your site speed is averaged over 3 Seconds on any one of your chosen servers get rid of your platform you can make it in WordPress and have your cake and eat it too. All you have to do is speak to one of the people that run the hosting companies I have spoken about or just going to WordPress and explain your situation or better yet stay here and keep asking us questions because you can do what you have set out to do and you will be okay. However WordPress is simply a better tool in my humble opinion and a much faster one that people are writing a lot more code for and look Accelerating much more rapidly then it's competitors so If your pinngdom speed is over three seconds switch everything over to WordPress
You can move your site to a different framework and retain your current rankings. I'm not going to lie to you and say that you will not have a small bit of lag before the search. But it will pay off strongly and if you're going to start messing with your Website you might as well to it the right way.
Respectfully,
Thomas
PS if you have any questions about what I've said please do not hesitate to ask I would be happy to answer

I hope this helps but everything Justin just told you is absolutely true. This is done more often in e-commerce websites where they're using stronger less similar frameworks and adding a word press blog. I would try to convince your friend not to mix-and-match to Paul with WordPress I don't understand the benefit but then again I don't get to see the projects so I should just tell you the fax. Yes you definitely can run WordPress separately on a different host and there are separate IP address is used all the time when you think about it in DNS your email, FTP sometimes that's FTPS definitely SFT P yeah I could go on. However I will spare us all. Remember with word press to get a strong managed WordPress post that's my best advice for your friend. I would look at WP engine, Pagely, zippy kid, web synthesis, page labs, they are the leaders in this industry right now and it really pays off a lot to use one of them. You can also help your friend I don't know if this is allowed or not you might want to check but you yourself get four months of WP engine for free through pro perks you can find it at the bottom of the page or 30% off for a life of Pagely through pro perks you can find it at the bottom of the page.
I hope I have been of help to you and please remember Justin's the one that told you first so don't forget to tip him well.
Sincerely,
Thomas

What you are looking to do is reasonably common place.
Websites that contain a blogs, download sections etc are often hosted on separate webservers (and IP's), so what you are looking at doing should be fine.
You seem to have the major SEO consideration covered and that is to use subdirectories from the existing domain (www.oldsiteexample.com/marketing) that way your new part of the site will benefit from the authority/rank etc of the old site, also any authority generated by the new part of the site will be passed on in part to www.oldsiteexample.com further boosting its auth.
If however you use subdomains (marketing.oldsiteexample.com) you would pretty much be starting your seo efforts for this part of the site from scratch, furthermore very little (if any) authority generated by this part of the site would be passed back to www.oldsiteexample.com
I hope that helps

Cost Difference Between Coding Custom Theme or Coding Child Theme
Assuming there is an SEO advantage to coding a Wordpress custom theme (wondering if that assumption is correct) versus modifying a child theme, is there a very significant cost difference between the two choices? Competition in my niche (New York City commercial real estate is keen) and I am dealing with competitors such as www.wework.com, 42floors.com and squarefoot.com with optimized sites built with quality code. In the event that we modify a child theme, I am leaning in any case towards have wireframes and illustrations provided to present to the developer. Should I expect a custom theme to be double the cost, triple assuming the design is provided? I have read that code maintenance on a child theme is less costly as modifications get pushed to the parent theme. How substantial are maintenance costs (time to maintain) for a custom theme? Thanks!!!

Site Migration due to Corporate Acquisition
Hey everyone, Wanted to check-in on something that I've been thinking way too much about lately. I'll do my best to provide background, but due to some poor planning, it is rather confusing to wrap your head around. There are currently three companies involved, Holding Corp (H Corp) and two operating companies, both in the same vertical but one B2B and the other is B2C. B2C corp has been pushed down the line and we're focusing primarily on H Corp and B2B brand. Due to an acquisition of H Corp and all of it's holdings, things are getting shuffled and Ive been brought in to ensure things are done correctly. What's bizarre is H Corp and it's web property are the dominant authority in SERPs for the B2B brand. As in B2B brand loses on brand searches to H Corp, let alone any product/service related terms. As such, they want to effectively migrate all related content from H Corp site to B2B brand site and handover authority as effectively as possible. Summary: Domain Migration from H Corp site to B2B Brand site. Ive done a few migrations in my past and been brought in to recover a few post-launch so I have decent experience and a trusted process. One of my primary objectives initially is change as little as possible with content, url structure (outside the root) etc so 301s are easy but also so it doesn't look like we're trying to play any games. Here's the thing, the URL structure for H Corp is downright bad from both a UX perspective and a general organizational perspective. So Im feeling conflicted and wanted to get a few other opinions. Here are my two paths as I see and Id love opinions on both: stick with a similar URL structure to H Corp through the migration (my normal process) but deviate from pretty much every best practice for structuring URLs with keywords, common sense and logic. Pro: follow my process (which has always worked in the past) Con: don't implement SEO/On-page best practices at this stage and wait for the site redesign to implement best practices (more work) Implement new URL structure now and deviate from my trusted process. Do you see a third option? Am I overthinking it? Other important details: B2B brand is under-going a site redesign, mostly aesthetic but their a big corporation and will likely take 6-9 months to get up. Any input greatly appreciated. Cheers, Brent

Moving to new site. Should I take old blog posts with me?
Our company website has needed a complete overhaul for some time now and the new one is almost ready to go live. We also have a separate "news" site that is houses around 800 blog posts and news items. (That news site will be thrown away because it's on a completely different domain and causes confusion.) So we have a main site with about 100 decent blog posts and a separate news site with 800 poor posts. I plan on bringing all the main site blog posts over to the new site (both WordPress), but my question is whether or not to bring over the news site posts? All, handful, none? Another issue is the news site doesn't have Google Analytics, so I'm not sure if any posts actually generate traffic, but I can from the main site we do get some referrals from it. As far as quality of content goes, it's poor. Not sure who wrote it all, but it's mainly text press releases that aren't very interesting. Is it worth bringing over for SEO purposes or simply delete the site and create a mass redirect so all of those pages will direct to the new website's blog page? Any help is greatly appreciated.

How do I optimize a site designed to be one scrolling page of content?
Our website uses section ID's as its navigation so all the content is on one page. When you click About Us, the page scrolls down to About Us. Products, the page scrolls to Products section, and etc. I am getting crawl errors for meta descriptions but will this go away once the main domain has this info? We just added the meta keywords and description to the header and since the navigation sections use the same page, I assume it will correct the errors. Any other advice on optimizing for site designs like ours would be great. www.theicecubekit.com is the site. Thanks,

Best Way to Re-Direct traffic from existing site to new site?
Good Morning, I have an existing site (http://goo.gl/QKkpi) running on a slow server. We decided to create a new site (http://goo.gl/XUH3f) with the intention of de-commissioning the first one. Both sites are on the same WMT account. What is the best way to permanently redirect any backlinks/traffic (all levels, from home page to product pages) from the old site to the new site (prior to shutting down the first one). Thanks a lot!

I need to buy a website template - anyone knows a good place to buy it? where you should buy one template?
I used the www.templatemonster.com or http://themeforest.net/, but is difficult to find a template with a focus on SEO. Also with the necessity to include text in the beginning of the website, is difficulty to found something really good.

Setup of three major retail sites.. need advice.
I recently have taken a new position responsible for three large national retail sites which are all owned by one parent organization. Through a series of acquisitions, these three major brands have been brought under one umbrella and a brand consolidation is likely not to happen within the next 2-4 years. I have a number of questions I’m hoping to get some feedback on, but first a little more background is necessary. A year ago (before my time) the three sites were over-hauled, but were designed to use one common custom CMS and all of the navigation and nearly all the content is the same (with some exceptions, such as tags, url, etc.). All of the brands have identical products and services; however, each one services a different demographic in the US. The design was intended for ease of management, but is terrible for seo. Additionally, without the geographic reference, they all compete for the same keywords. They have now begun a very large ecommerce project utilizing an ATG platform. The initial direction is to use one platform for all three brands, but keep them on separate domains and with the use of basic switching, replace nominal content such as logos and references of the brands for each of the domains. I’m concerned with this approach and would like to hear your feedback.. When optimizing a page for one keyword set, are they likely to be filtered due to dup content? The argument that management has is that all three current sites rank very well for one keyword on all three sites. They feel it won’t be an issue due to this. One option, that is currently still available, is to tri-band one ecommerce site, but it would have to be on an entirely new domain. The other three domains are very well established and are PR6s. Management, and even I, is afraid to abandon these other domains, but having a single domain would allow us to have unique content and really leverage all efforts to one domain. Thoughts? Any knowledge or thoughts what kind of impact having three domains on one ATG platform will be? Thanks much! John If you feel it will help, please message me and I can share the urls... Also, how would you handle a company blog in this case?
