Link Profile, is the keyword ratio too high?
-
Hi,
Our website (www.NutritionMission.co.uk) has dropped from 6 to 30 in the ranking for our main keyword (Nutritional Therapy).
Pulling a spreadsheet off of all the inbound links looks like 41% of anchor text is related to Nutritional Therapy.
Is this ratio too high for the new google update? There are also a lot of directory submissions from the SEO people we were paying before.
Anyone point me on the right track to get some idea to how to work things out? ie. add more links to ratio of anchor text is lowered etc.
Kind Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian,
I would have to agree that it does look like your backlink profile may have contributed to your recent drop in rankings.
The recent Google update, as rightly stated by Jordan, has centered around over-optimization. This has meant that many sites which have focussed on creating links with mainly commercial anchors such as 'nutritional therapy' or 'nutritional therapist' have been hit hard by the latest algorithm update.
Rob Kerry produced a really interesting Whiteboard Friday recently, where he talks about the over-optimization of anchor text.
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-penguin-update-whiteboard-friday
Having looked at your backlink profile I would suggest that you focus on building more brand specific anchor links (http://www.nutritionmission.co.uk or Nutrition Mission) as these look more natural than the large number of commercial anchors you currently have.
Adam.

Thanks Chaps, really good info as usual.

Hey Ian,
Hard to say for sure without doing some more detailed analysis, but I would say it's a warning flag for sure.. A lot of Google's changes recently revolve around "over-optimization" and spam/crap links, blog networks, etc.
41% of your backlinks are exact match anchor text for "nutritional therapy", that doesn't look natural at all.
We are doing a back link study right now and some sites who are ranking very well for big keywords have little to NO exactly keyword match anchor text links to their site. They have really good on-page describing the KW they are targeting and have very high quality/authoritative links spread through their sites, usually with their brand name or URL, and sometimes with a keyword.
You should check out a very good article on SEO Gadget about this

Hope that helps,
Jordan

Hello Debi-Ann!
In my opinion I think your drop in the serp is because of links coming from link directories and spam blogs. These links don't count much (if any) after Google's Penguin update.
Yes it's possible Google uses the anchor text to spot unnatural link building.
For you getting some really good links from some authoritative sites might be really helpful.
I'm not a Google employee, just my guess.

A large number of high spam links are negatively affecting my DA, how do I remove them?
I have identified a large number of very high spam score links to "free wallpaper" coming into my site.
Technical SEO | | beckygh
I am running a wordpress blog and would like some advice on the best course of action. There are thousands of spam domains linking to various images on my site with the anchor text "get free high quality hd wallpaper" The webmasters for these domains are not contactable so I am planning to submit a disavow file to google. I am aware these links have negatively affected my DA so would like to do more to remove them. My questions are: will deleting the images they link to help?
As this is on a wordpress site deleting the images will result in a soft 404, should I force a hard 404 to properly break the link?
Will this positively improve my DA?1 -
How to Break Up a Page with Too Many Links
My client has a live page with 100+ links subdivided into 10 categories that each have great potential keyword targeting opportunities. I'd like to improve this page and my intuition is to split it into 11 pages, one page with links to all the others and a bit of content about each. Here's an example of the potential IA: Dog Rescue Groups

Too many navigational links
Hi there, I have an issue with the amount of internal links on my webpages. Moz campaign manager gives a lot of 'too many on page links' issues. Over 7000.
Technical SEO | | MarcelMoz
I know the importance of a good internal linking structure. 1. Not too many internal links (over approximately 100) is good for flowing through some authority from authoritive pages.
2. Too many internal links can spend all of the 'crawler budget' so the crawlers won't crawl the complete website anymore (right?). This can cause problems with indexing new webpages (right?). This is the situation: The website is a webshop The header contains 6 links, the footer contains 32 links, the homepage contains 42 links, the body content of some category pages contains a variated amount of links from 30 to a maximum of 100 links. Product pages do contain a maximum of 25 links. There is no problem here. Now here's the problem: The website navigation is a dropdown menu that contains 167 links to tier 2. These links are very important for our visitors. They can immediately find the right category/product by it. Removing or shrinking this dropdown is not an option. But the dropdown navigation is causing all of the 'too many on page links' issues. Question: is there a SEO (indexing, PA) problem in this situation which i should solve? What should I solve and how should I solve this? Note: pages have good organic positions and authority. Thanks a lot. Marcel0 -
Keyword in Domain or not?
My on page optimization grade is an "A" with the following factors; Factor Overview

Critical Factors

4 / 4

High Importance Factors

7 / 7

Moderate Importance Factors

8 / 9

Low Importance Factors

11 / 11

Optional Factors

5 / 5

The main thing I appear to be missing is keywords in my URL. How truly important is that in today's SEO world and how much time or ranking would be lost if I do not have control to change the external links to my website if I decided to migrate to a keyword relevant url?

How do you find bad links to your site?
My website has around 900 incoming links and I have a Google 50 penalty that is sitewide. I have been doing research and from what I can see is that the 50 penalty is usually associated with scetchy links. The penalty started last year. I had about 40 related domains to my main site and each had a simple one page site with a link to the main site. (I know I screwed up) I cleaned up all of those links by removing them. The single page site still exist, but they have no links and several of them still rank very well. I also had an outside SEO person that bought a few links. I came clean with Google and told them everything. I gave them all of my sites and that the SEO person had bought links. I gave them full disclosure and removed everything. I have one site that I can't get the link removed from. I have contacted them numerous times to remove the link and I get no response. I am curious if anyone has had a simular experience and how they corrected the situation. Another issue is that my site is "thin" because its an ecommerce affiliate site and full of affiliate links. I work in the costume market. I'm also afraid that I have other bad links pointing to my site. Dooes anyone know of a tool to identify bad links that Google may be penalizing me for at this time. Here is Google's latest denial of my reconsideration request. Dear site owner or webmaster of XXXXXXXXX.com. We received a request from a site owner to reconsider XXXXXXXX.com for compliance with Google's Webmaster Guidelines. We've reviewed your site and we believe that some or all of your pages still violate our quality guidelines. In order to preserve the quality of our search engine, pages from XXXXXXXXXX.com may not appear or may not rank as highly in Google's search results, or may otherwise be considered to be less trustworthy than sites which follow the quality guidelines. If you wish to be reconsidered again, please correct or remove all pages that are outside our quality guidelines. When such changes have been made, please visit https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/reconsideration?hl=en and resubmit your site for reconsideration. External Sitewide Links and SEO
I have one big question about the potential SEO value -- and possibly also dangers? -- of "followed" external sitewide links. Examples of these would be: a link to your site from another site's footer a blogroll link a link to your site from another site's global navigation Aside from the link's position in the HTML file (the higher the better, presumably), are these links essentially the same from an SEO point of view or different (and how)? There used to be an influential view out there that the link juice value of a sitewide link was the same as that of a single link (presumably from the linking site's home page), even though a sitewide link may in fact result a huge number individual links. Is this true or false? What is the math here? Should one worry about having "too many" sitewide links, in the sense that this may raise red flags by way of the algo? I talked to someone a few months ago (before the recent algo updates) who believed that he had got a minus 10 penalty or whatever it was for getting too many sitewide links We offer website design and development as well as SEO, and we put a keyworded link to ourselves in the footer. I think this is a fairly common practice. Is this a good or bad idea SEO-wise? One opinion is that for external sitewide footer links, you should best have a dofollow link on the home page, but nofollow it on all other pages. What is your opinion about that? Is there anything else that is distinct, interesting or important about sitewide links' SEO value and pitfalls? Thank you!
