Penalty for many domains pointing to the same URL?
-
I've searched around on the Google forums, and other sources (including the Q&A!), but haven't seen a solid answer on this one.
I've recently discovered that throughout the years we've had several hundred domains pointed to our homepage. These are our domains and are related to our niche. I believe they were pointed for the purposes of attracting type-in traffic.
Before last month I knew at least some existed, but I didn't realize the extent until last week.
I know there isn't any positive SEO effect to doing this (except perhaps if any of the domains have links to them, and a few do), but is there any negative SEO effect? I realize that there are legitimate redirects for type-in traffic, like misspellings and such, but most of these are just exact-match-domains. It just screams unnatural to me, but perhaps I'm just a little paranoid.
-
It's probably natural, as lots of sites have and continue to do this. The problem comes when lots of domains are 301 directed all at once, or there are spammy link pointed to the 301 domains.
In the old days, misspellings and exact match parked domains got a fair amount of traffic, so this practice was much more common than it is today. Now, Google is much more sophisticated and these types of domains don't pack much of a punch.
On the flip side, you're probably gaining little or no SEO benefit from this either. If you are concerned about it, you might test stopping the redirection for 30 days and see what happens, or change the 301's into 302's, which don't pass PageRank and are therefor considered a little safer in shady situations.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your SEO!

It seems like the answer isn't so much the quantity of domains, but how each individual domain is used. So I think what I'll do is look out for any domains with a bad link profile, but leave the rest for type-in traffic.
-
If they're just domain names, it doesn't matter one way or the other. If the domain names have penalties, then sure there'd be a risk of passing a penalty on with the redirect.
I worked on a project once where the customer had purchased several hundred domain names. Some were microsites that had little value but a couple of links, some had mask redirects to their main site, others were just empty. I created individual pages on their main website to reflect the microsite content, then redirected the microsite domains there. I 301 redirected every masked and every floating domain name they owned just in case there was type in traffic.
The consolidation was done alongside other SEO efforts and the site in question has been consistently near the top of the SERP's for their target market. You have to look at your motives for doing something... if you're not working to be manipulative and have legitimate business reasons for doing something, then chances are it's ok. A lot of SEO is just about common sense.
-
Just like Kyle said, you could be hurting your website's Google rankings with these 301 redirects. You will also have a bigger chance of being penalized if some of your URLs have some identical content. Your question also pops up in another SEOMoz question: http://www.seomoz.org/q/can-penalties-be-passed-via-301-redirect
-
I see no possibility of a penalty as it sounds like these domains were purchased just to grab type-in traffic, protect the product and brand, etc. This is natural and logical behavior.
Unless you're actively building links to one or more of these redirected domains (something that spammers do), I think you can sleep easy.
If you want to be extra careful, you could monitor backlinks to all the domains you've got redirected and make sure that no one is linking to them...but if your site already has a good link profile and trust with Google, I'd say who cares.
-
You can get penalized for this if these domains are created for the purpose of getting extra exposer on the internet for the domain they are all pointing to.

Tool to Generate All the URLs on a Domain
Hi all, I've been using xml-sitemaps.com for a while to generate a list of all the URLs that exist on a domain. However, this tool only works for websites with under 500 URLs on a domain. The paid tool doesn't offer what we are looking for either. I'm hoping someone can help with a recommendation. We're looking for a tool that can: Crawl, and list, all the indexed URLs on a domain, including .pdf and .doc files (ideally in a .xls or .txt file) Crawl multiple domains with unlimited URLs (we have 5 websites with 500+ URLs on them) Seems pretty simple, but we haven't been able to find something that isn't tailored toward management of a single domain or that can crawl a huge volume of content.

Hyphenating a Domain Name - What would you do?
So I have some chums setting up their own digital outfit. When discussing SEO, naturally domain names came into play. They were looking at 'Gray Digital'. So, initially they jumped to the conclusion that they ought to buy 'graydigital.com' and the .co.uk variant. But a best practice post: http://moz.com/learn/seo/domain - Leads me to think that 'gray-digital.com' may be the better option as far as readability is concerned? Then of course you start thinking - 'should we just make it 'Gray-Digital-Marketing.com' instead?' From your experience, what would you ladies and gents do? Kind regards, John. (EDIT: Having read more around the subject I realise more than one dash is a bad idea. So instead would you bother with the singular hyphen?)

Overly Dynamic URLs
I have a site that I use to time fitness events and I like to post the results using query strings. I create a link to each event's results/gallery/etc. I don't need these pages crawled and I don't want them to hurt my seo. Can I put a "do not crawl" meta on them or will that hurt my overall positioning? What are my other options?

Migrating a better performing domain to a less well performing domain
I have a customer who has many domain names and assets but she's wanting to consolidate some of them to help her simplify things for her customers but mostly she wants to build up her website through which she sells products. Grief Reflection - www.griefreflection.com is a personal journal that she's keeping to process the impending death of her husband and it's also linked to her business website which sells healing from grief types of products. Storybooks for Healing - www.storybooksforhealing.com is the website through which she sells workbooks and memory books for people who want to keep the memory of their loved one alive after they've gone. I've setup both of these domains as campaigns and have been looking at the metrics for both. The grief reflection blog out performs the storybooks for healing website. If we merge the two then the Grief Reflection blog would likely become a subdirectory under www.storybooksforhealing.com and be more fully integrated which she thinks will help her visitors not get confused while navigating her website. www.griefreflection.com has 12,637 links while www.storybooksforhealing.com has 1,462. Also, Google has indexed 380 pages of Grief Reflection and only 100 pages for Storybooks for Healing, though that may be because there are fewer pages to index. Grief reflection also has a 4.36 mozRank and 5.30 mozTrust, where Storybooks has 4.13 mozRank and 5.15 mozTrust. Should I counsel her to keep these domains separate? If not, would simply setting up 301 redirects from the www.griefreflection.com domain name to the new subdirectory under www.storybooksforhealing.com be the way to go? Thank you ever so much for any wisdom anyone can provide.

Trailing Slashes In Url use Canonical Url or 301 Redirect?
I was thinking of using 301 redirects for trailing slahes to no trailing slashes for my urls. EG: www.url.com/page1/ 301 redirect to www.url.com/page1 Already got a redirect for non-www to www already. Just wondering in my case would it be best to continue using htacces for the trailing slash redirect or just go with Canonical URLs?

Should I be redirecting a .gov.au domain to a .com/.com.au Marketing URL?
Hi everyone, First time post - what a great community! On a trial at the moment but will definitely be signing up to PRO. The situation I'm helping to promote an event in Australia (lets call it "myevent"). The event also goes by a nickname "myev" (which isn't searched as much as "myevent"). The event for the most part is promoted offline as www.myevent.com. As it currently stands (and appears to have been the case for a number of years), www.myevent.com and www.myevent.com.au 302 redirect to www.mylocation.gov.au/myev The event is pretty much number 1 for keywords around "my event" and "myev", despite little attention being paid to on page optimisation and issues around duplicate content which I intend to fix. The domain being indexed by Google is www.mylocation.gov.au/myev . Open site explorer stats Open Site explorer shows www.mylocation.gov.au/myev as having a strong domain authority, and hundreds of backlinks. www.myevent.com and www.myevent.com.au have domain authorities in the 20s and about 30-40 backlinks each. The conundrum I've had a chat with the IT guys running the site(s) and they mentioned they'll be switching the way the redirects work, so everything goes to www.myevent.com NOT the .gov.au URL. I've done a bit of reading on the forums and understand that 301s should be used in order to pass the juice/authority from the existing domain (in this case www.location.gov.au/mye). I understand not all of this will be passed. What I'm not sure about is which URL should be the final preferred destination. I may not have a choice - www.myevent.com has been the preferred URL for a long time - but want to know if this will affect the performance in search results if the .com.au isn't used as the final destination (even though we would be redirecting from it)? Any suggestions / ideas / help would be most appreciated. I hope this all makes sense - I'm relatively new to the whole SEO world! Best wishes and many thanks.
