Relaunch - How to find URL's to keep
-
Hi,
During the process of redefining our business I'm planning a relaunch of our website. My goal is to restructure my content and URL structure. I have a lot of non relevant and not ranked content.
My question how I can find out the top 10 or top 20 URL's of my actual site that are worth to keep.
I'm not familiar with this kind of research...
Thanks in advance

Hi Bastian,
Finding urls to keep is simple. Just login to your Google Analytics and Check the tab "Content". You will find all the urls and their pageviews. Sort down the necessary urls.
Recommended: It is recommended to add 301 redirects from all the old urls to new urls. Also add a custom 404 page after the launch.
Login to webmaster tools to find more errors.

Infant Raj

Hi Bastian
This process can look quite daunting at first, but can be quite easy and fun to do once you know how.
First, I always look at two criteria for redirecting a page - incoming traffic and incoming links. If a page has a decent amount of either, I will redirect it. If it doesn't, I let it 404.
Finding URLs with incoming traffic can be an easy one with Analytics. If you have Google Analytics, login to the dashboard and click on Traffic Sources -> Sources -> All traffic on the left-hand side. Once it's loaded, just below the graph you will see "Primary dimension" - at the end of this line click "other", then from the dropdown menu, click traffic sources -> landing page.
You'll now have a list of URLs that people have used to enter your site. Pick a time frame of about 3-6 months and see how many people have entered the site via that URL. If you have URLs with 5 or more visits (or whatever threshold you think is best), save the URL as one that will be redirected.
I think it is important to redirect landing page URLs as it is the very start of a user journey that people have used in the past. It can be off putting to see a 404 straight on entry, so ensuring that the user is taken to an appropriate page via a redirect is highly recommended.
Redirecting URLs that have been linked to the in the past can be an important step to take to ensure that you keep all of your link "strength" or "equity" when you relaunch. For this, we can use SEOMoz's Open Site Explorer.
Go into OSE and type in your site's URL. Once loaded, click the "top pages" tab. Export the results into a CSV and open that with Excel. Enable filters, which can be done by clicking "data" and then "filter" while having any of the top row cells selected, and then filter out results in the "inbound links" column to exclude results containing less than 2, 3, or 5 links, depending on your threshold.
You'll then be left with only the pages on your site that have links pointing towards them. Now, rather than just redirecting all those pages, it is worth checking each URL in open site explorer again to look at what links are going to those pages. This may take a bit of time, but this way you can ensure that you will only pass on links that you're happy with. You may have a page that has 5 inbound links, but on review you think those links are spammy. Don't redirect this page and you will not have the new site associated with these links.
Hopefully at the end of this you will have a good list of URLs you should redirect. Try and redirect them to the appropriate pages on your site for a good user experience The rest you can leave to 404. If some pages don't fit in the new structure but you want to keep for user or link reasons, redirecting them to the root domain is no problem. And to add, I've redirected thousands of URLs to a root domain before and have not had any adverse effects.
Remember to update your XML sitemaps and resubmit them to Google/Bing webmaster tools as well once you're done.
Hope this helps and all the best with your relaunch!

Featured Snippet - URL change?
Hi all - we have a blog post that has ranked as a featured snippet. We are doing some cleanup on our back-end opening up a few other blog post categories which would change the URL address by one word. I'm wondering if anyone knows how this would effect the ranking of the featured snippet if we were to change this address even if we did a redirect?

How to deal with lot of old content that doesn't drive traffic - delete?
Hi community, i hope someone can help me with this, We are migrating our e-commerce site next februari. I'm preparing the content migration. For a large part exact copies of our product listing and product detail pages will be migrated.

However, we also have a lot of old blog content, which is, because of seasonality and trendiness, outdated and doesn't drive traffic anymore. It actually is just worthless content. (Not only as a traffic driver, this also counts for extremely low to none internal driven traffic (both internal search and internal navigation). We have about 4.000+ blogs of which about 100 drive the most traffic (mostly incited by e-mail and social campaigns and internal navigation promoted on important category landing pages during some period. Is it a bad signal to search engines to delete these old content pages? I.a.: going from a content-rich to a content-poor site?
Off course I will migrate the top 100 traffic earning content and provide proper redirects to them0 -

URL structure on moving from old nukedit site to Drupal
I am currently rebuilding a site in Drupal. The old site was in Nukedit and all the urls end in .asp. Given the new urls will not end in .asp is there any point in matching the rest of the url or will using 301 redirects (to better seo'd pages) be sufficient to minimise any (temporary) ranking loss?

Can having similar content on my company's two sites hurt our rankings?
We have a very successful website that has been up for a number of years (www.comellaortho.com). We rank high in the natural rankings for that site. A few months ago, we started seeing patients in another nearby city. I purchased a new domain name, www.dansvilleortho.com, and had our web company duplicate the website under the new domain name. The reality is that the content on these two sites are nearly identical. Some of the pages are different; for example, there are fewer pages on the new site. But the pages that do exist are nearly identical. My question is: Can having similar content on my company's two sites hurt our rankings? Based on what I've read thus far, I believe the answer is "Yes". However, I'm curious how bad this may hurt us. I'm not as worried about the new site (dansvilleortho.com) because our competition in that city is slim to none. But I AM worried about harming the original site/business (comellaortho.com). Which site(s) rankings may be affected by this, and if so, how bad? Thank you.

Blog and Website = 2 different URL's - Is it WORTH to merge content on to one site
Good day Mozzers! A friend of mine recently asked for my help in regards to online marketing. While getting familiar with his online presence, I realized that he has a blog hosted under a completely different URL Main Site = http://pardons.org/ (page rank 4)
Content Development | | vip4service
Blog = http://pardons.wordpress.com/ (page rank 3) What I am battling with is whether or not he should take all of the blog content he has, and merge it on to his main site. It has over 280+ blog posts spanning over a few years, so there is A LOT of content that could benefit his main site. However is it worth it, or should he continue to run everything as 2 different sites? Also, of you suggest moving the content over, what would be the best way to do it in your opinion? He currently has links on his blog TO his main site, so there is a little bit of link juice there, but with a average of 300 views a day, he only get about 10 clicks to his main site from the blog. Thanks a ton for your help!0 -
Keep or remove a link directory with 700 entries?
Hi, I've a site which has a link directory included. About 700 entries. Each entry has an own page with a title, description and of course a link to the extern site. The link is not marked as "nofollow". The site is only linking to similar / relevent other sites. Now the seo question: Keep the link directory as is? Add a nofollow to the links? Remove the link directory? (and about 700 pages) Best wishes, Georg.

Finding a copywriter
Hi seomoz, This is not quite a SEO issue, but I have a feeling you may be able help. English is a second language to me and copywriting is not my favorite sport. So, I've decided to find a copywriter. But have no clue how to look for one. I have hired ton of programmers, designers, and other technical resources in the past. People that have concrete skills - programmer where I could say do X, Y & Z and I can check if X, Y & Z were done - are no problem for me to hire. It still takes a long time, but that's not an issue. I know I want the copywriter to write in certain style (style of seomoz.org, woot.com or doubleyourdating.com). How do you define writing like that? Can writing like that can be defined? And put into requirements? Do you need 'customer avatar' or 'marketing voice' document or something similar? How do I find a kick ass copywriter? Optimisticly hoping there is a better answer than just 'test bulkload of them'! Thank you,
