Identifying conversion rate for product
-
Hi,
I need to identify the conversion rate for a product, lets call it a spanner.
I have 100s of spanner product urls and I ensured that the url protocols must include the product name e.g /red_spanner so its easy for me to work out the conversion rate in analytics for all my spanner pages as I just add 'spanner' to the landing page filter, hit the ecommerce tab and bingo.
What I cant figure out is how to work out the conversion rate for all spanner sales which includes alot of sales which didnt originate on spanner pages e.g. home page > search result > checkout. Theres 1000s of variations of this e.g. email > home > search > product page > checkout.
How can I work out the total conversion rate for spanners which needs to include: people landing on a spanner page and people who didnt arrive at a spanner page and did a search with eventually got them to the spanner pages.
Hopefully its not as complicated as I think!
Thanks in Advance!

Google themselves pointed me in the right direction and I figured out another solution with a tech friend.
Googles solution:
Surprisingly simple - I created advanced segments for visits to each product page e.g. for views of pages containing 'spanner in the url'. Then view traffic reports/ecommerce tab and bingo, conv rate for anyone who visited the site and looked at 1 or more spanner pages. Thankfully, and this is the key, analytics shows the visitor numbers for those that looked at 1 or more spanner pages so it avoids duplication.
Solution we came up with:
Create a session level custom variable which tracks when a visitor visits a product page i.e. 'spanner' page within a session and ends up purchasing. the custom variable is set so that is someone visits say a hammer and then a spanner page and buys a spanner, its the latter product i.e. spanner which is tracked for conv rate purposes. The exact setup of this is beyond me but it works in theory.
Hope that helps someone else with this vexing issue!
(On Mikes point about tracking page value instead, its a great one but conversion rate is an important metric for lots of reasons but not least as an indicator of sales performance. If AOV went up it would increase page value but conversion rate might be static or even falling).
-
Thanks mike. That makes sense but again there would be alot of opportunities for duplication e.g. the page value of spanner search results would be x, the page value of spanner product pages would be y and because of how people get around the site y would be included in x and vice versa. Ill check out that article.

David, thanks for replying again. That might work. Theres other issues here which might mean its just not possible e.g. to track conversion rate for a given product I think we can only do so if there is intent for that product e.g visit a spanner page, conduct a spanner search from home. All the visitors who e.g. type in the domain direct and bounce immediately (and the 1000s of other similar connotations) cant be included in conversion figures for a given product.

I would be a little wary of combining hit-level dimensions (page) with session-level metrics (conversion rate). A better option would be to look at a hit-level metric like Page Value. More info here in this great post by Avinash:

I see the issue
What if you made a custom report with filter- spanner product urls- you should be able to see uniques visitors as a dimension
-
That doesnt work because a purchaser may have viewed 20 spanner pages. The conv figures in that scenario would vary wildly based on how many spanner page views there were and not give you a true conversion rate based on a unique visit.
-
You can try making a advanced segment showing views of pages with spanner in it - Then Find how many transactions of spanners you got and do the math.

Hi Ashley,
Thanks for the reply. That gives me the landing page that originated the purchase but not the conv rate?

Howdy Andy!
If you don't already, you will need to have eCommerce tracking setup on Google Analytics.
Once you do, you can scope down to Product Performance.
Apply the Landing Page as a Secondary Dimension, and this should give you the information you are looking for.I hope this helps!

Bounce rate and Chrome
My client had a large spike in their bounce rate at the end of June, 2017. After spending far too long looking around Google Analytics I discovered that the bounce rate increased 5x when version 59.0.3071.104 of Google Chrome appeared on the scene. Version 59.0.3071.102 and older had a bounce rate of about 13%. Version 59.0.3071.104 increased to 65%. Each subsequent version is about the same.FireFox, Safari and the rest are showing no significant changes.Any idea what is happening here? Many thanks.

Problems with analytics, conversation data and assisted conversions
Hi guys. Having issues with analytics. Firstly, it doesn't record all our sales accurately. My boss downloaded a sales report directly from our site, and it doesn't match up to the analytics, our actual sales were significantly higher than Google analytics was reporting (by about a 1/3). Any idea why Google is missing so many of the conversions? Also, I'm trying to work our how many assisted conversion we are getting from our ad words campaigns. I've been looking through our top conversion path data to try find conversions that started with a paid click. However, I seem to have some inconsistencies. We have only one ad words group that is on the display network (Re-marketing V1 Ad group 1) , and according to analytics we have a conversion from it (See Screen shot 1). However, there is no record of this in our ad words data. (See screen shot 2). This is over the same time period. I don't know what to take from this. Can anyone help? Isaac. Offline conversions not as e-commerce transactions in universal analytics
I am working on a project to measure offline conversions with the new Universal Analytics from Google. When a lead gets the status "order" in my custom made lead management system, we sent the earlier grabbed Google client ID with the code below to Universal Analytics. The upload is working, although Analytics reports the conversion as an e-commerce transaction. I think the conversion must be uploaded as a analytics goal / event but I don't know what we can add to the code to let Analytics report it that way. Does anyone know how I can modify the code or Analytics settings to make sure that Google Analytics does not report it as eCommerce transaction? My code for uploading the Google Client ID to Analytics: <code>$ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, 'http://www.google-analytics.com/collect'); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION, 1); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, false); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HTTPAUTH, CURLAUTH_ANY); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)"); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, "v=1&tid=UA-XXXXXXXX-42&cid=379445656".urlencode('.')."1380816256&t=transaction&tr=123.00&ti=43388&z=".time()); curl_close ($ch);</code>

Has GA changed how it calculates bounce rate?
Updated website from Magento backend to Wordpress and since the redeploy, my bounce rate has dropped from 40% to 4%. I did check to see if there was duplicate GA tracking code but only one call. I checked reports under "visitor flow" and one page visits seem inline with the previous bounce rate. Weird. Never experienced this before.

100% Bounce Rate in my Checkout??
I am currently building a report on our bounce rates for the past few years. When I look at older data, from 2010-11 I see varying bounce rates for the checkout, which is fine. When I move to new data, 2011-12 and 2012-13 I am seeing 100% bounce rates and exit rates for my checkout. We do use a 3rd party for our checkout, Shopatron and yes we do have it set up to track. Any thoughts on why I might be seeing this high rate for my bounce rate oh and this also goes for my exit percentage as well.

New GA interface - Number of conversion by source
Hi Guys, Hope this is an easy one for a GA ninja. In the new GA interface, how can I view the number of conversions by source, instead of the default conversion rate by source. For example, if I want to view the number of conversion from Adwords. I'm looking at Goals > Source / Medium > Google CPC and looking at Goal Set 1. However all data is expressed in percentages. Thanks in advance!

Organic bounce rate after site re-launch
3 months ago a client of mine re-launched theoir web site (after having a lot of work done on it). Since then, many of the SEO indications are good - more non-paid keywords sending search visits, more organic visits overall, more URLs receiving entrances via search, etc. The issue is that their bounce rate has been increasing pretty much EVERY week since. Has anyone seen a similar issue and what could a potential solution be for this? Thanks everyone!
