Guest Blogging. Is it a good thing?
-
Hi,
We are looking into guest blogging to get links out there to our site. Is there any pitfalls to avoid? Any good advice to share? Is it actually a good thing to do?
We have seen some site that offer to help for example http://guestblogged.com are these good or a con?
All advice welcomed.
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew
Guest blogging can be a great thing - if done correctly.
I'm never much of a fan of a service that makes you blindly commit, so if you were going to go further with that company, I'd request some samples of their work and websites that they have written for.
But to be honest, I think you'd have better luck in looking for guest blogging prospects yourself. You can do this in a number of ways - MyBlogGuest is a popular place to start finding prospects. I like searching for blogs listed on Technorati as well. Gaz Copeland also put together a brilliant spreadsheet that will combine your target keyword with a number of search terms, so you can search Google for sites that have pages like "write for us" or "contribute to this site" etc. This can be a great way of mining prospects.
Now that you have some prospects, here's how I filter them: the primary feature that I look for is an engaged audience for the industry I am working for. That means, looking at the social shares and comments left on the blog in previous posts. This is key for me, as I see guest blogging as a traffic and relationship builder first and as an SEO tool second - for the simple reason that I believe traffic and relationships are higher converters.
For the SEO aspect, I look at a solid PA and DA score and also I verify their backlinks using Open Site Explorer. Check that the highest quality links going to the root domain look to be relevant and editorial and not just spammed somewhere like in a comment section.
You may have heard from some doomsayers that guest blogging is going to be penalised - these are exaggerated claims but not entirely unfounded. Guest blogging has been spammed by some and you do see some really crap quality articles put together for the sole purpose of getting a link (on equally crap blogs). You want to avoid those. This is another reason why I primarily look for engaged audiences and social media interactions - if you find blogs like these, you're more than likely to have found a place that only wants quality content. Get your content on there and everyone wins.
Hope this helps you to get started!

Sitewide links from blogs we sponsor - A Bad Thing?
We sponsor a few blogs in our niche. As part of the sponsorship, they include an advert on the RHS or LHS of the blog page. Links are dofollow and are sitewide. Should I be concerned? Should I be asking for a nofollow instead, if possible? I've recently disavowed links and am waiting to see what happens with this - hopefully there's a Penguin update soon - but I wondered if the blog links were part of the problem.

Question about links on blogs
I have a number of blogs, but I'll use this one as an example: http://www.totalpackers.com/. If you look in the left column, we have "friends" links and "more Packers" links. In every case, these were links that we traded or links to our own sites. We get traffic from a number of these sites because of the link exchange, but I'm worried having these is hurting our SEO (as well these sites posting our links). It's crossed my mind that I should remove all these links from our site and ask that our links be removed from their sites. Would that be overreacting? Or is this something I should do? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Monty

Blog Networks
We have found a couple of blogs that would be good for some unique content but I suspect they may be part of a network. Apart from checking the IP and for duplicate content of them both, are there any other signs that they may be part of a network?

Guest Blogging
I am looking to get into guest blogging for our retail brick-and-mortar store to increase more local search traffic. 1. Any local SEO recommendations/tips you have? 2. Can you post the same article in multiple places? Or is this a huge no-no? 3. For local search, should we focus on article directories or guest blogs? Thanks in advance for your feedback, and sorry that it's a three-parter! 🙂

Re april 5th post on over optimization - need clarification blogging
I mainly do content creation for clients .e.g. site and blog on word press - then link the blogs to the related static page. I have been just linking to the static page using keywords that match the title tag keywords. Is that correct?

Blog Commenting good or bad?
I spend a good amount of time on SEO forums and I found a thread about building links within comments.. I personally don't see how putting my keyword in my name place and linking it to my site will benefit me, I feel like google is already on to this and no one is going to click on it. Is this a waste of time?
