Should I build & try to rank several pages for similar keywords?
-
I have a client who's domain already ranks #1 on Google for 'automotive advertising agency'. However we want several listing on the first page. Should I create a few more pages like
www.domain.com/automotive-advertising-agency
www.domain.com/advertising-agency
www.domain.com/automotive-advertising
I'm assuming I can get these pages to rank well, but I'm wondering if Google will penalize us for this.
Is this a good or bad idea?

You need completely different AND substantive AND engaging.
Most of my content attacking similar keywords has 500 to 2000 words and 2 to 8 images. Some have a short video.
These pages hold visitors.
Google has become very stingy about giving two positions on the first page of the SERPs. Two years ago I had three and four positions on the first page of the SERPs for lots of my good keywords. Now, it is hard to get more than three unless you are after keywords with very little competition or keywords that are very similar to your brand name. However, I have a product page and an article page at the top of the SERPs for lots of keywords.
I view the three keyword examples that you gave as being very distinct. I would not expect those three articles to be in competition with one another. Maybe "automotive advertising agency" sneaking in the the SERPs for "advertising agency". However, if you are going after this in the USA market the competition for "advertising agency" is not especially easy. I think it would be hard to get two listings on the first page of that SERP.

so as long as the content is complete different for each page, Google wont penalize me?

One of my sites sells a retail product line where big brands hold the top positions. My site ranks at about #5 for the primary keyword; however, I have bombed ALL of the secondary keywords with substantive articles, each featuring a product group that they can purchase from my site. I have video, photos, how to select it, how to fix it, how to use it..... I am still putting up content for every other keyword that I think might pull traffic and some that will not pull much traffic but are interesting to the visitor.
Each of these articles takes a while to develop and I don't get fast pay-back on them, but I know that they will be up there producing for years.... one of these days Google will realize that the big brands don't have shit for content and that I should be number one simply by brute force authorship.

EGOL - Your enthusiasm is contagious!! I was about to give up on this approach based on the first 2 responses. However after reading your answer, I'm going to build the pages.

I actually think that the keywords in your file names could each be developed into substantive kickass articles that are absolutely unique.
Advertising agency is a general topic about the wide variety of business that help their clients with advertising. How the business works, where ads are placed, how effective ads are developed and tested. (People write lots and lots of articles about SEO.... the same could be done here).
Automobile advertising agency is a specific type of advertising agency and a person with great expertise could tell most people more than they ever wanted to know about that topic and be distinct from the generic "advertising agency".
Automotive advertising is very different from an agency and articles on that could trace the history of this business, feature many different types of advertising for new and used cars, luxury and economy cars. This article would include web ads, print ads, metal signs, swag, premiums, road maps, road signs. This would be a fun article to write (if you are the right person who really knows this stuff) and the topic could actually be broken down into numerous sub articles with galleries of vintage signs, road signs, print, etc. Amazing content if you have the right person writing and that person knows where to get the info. I bet you could get the guys from that History Channel pickers program and they could do five articles on signs alone.
You see, a person with expertise could develop enormous unique content about these topics. Is this the type of content you are interested in? Maybe, maybe not, but if done well it will be the absolute opposite of spam.

This is similar to the Demand Studios model, wherein they tried to get as many pages as possible with very similar content (but not completely duplicated) based on minor keyword modifications. For instance, how to grill a panini, how to cook a panini, how to make a panini, etc.
Google smacked them for it, and rightly so.
-
I would consider this spam. If you are ranking number one for a keyword and someone visits and leaves your site without a conversion, there was a reason for it. Dominating multiple spots might sound like a great idea, but it is going to be hard to formulate unique content when you are targeting such similars keywords. I would rebuild my original content to reflect multiple variances of the keyword and make sure that page is super authoritative and try to rank naturally.

Competitor Ranking in Positions 1 & 2
I have seen an increasing instance of where the same company, one of our main competitors, are ranking in positions 1 and 2 for the same search phrase. It appears that both the homepage and dedicated service page relevant to the search term are ranking, but surely having them at position 1 & 2 is not something search engines like Google want to encourage? I have also seen other instances of the same company ranking twice on page 1 but not necessarily in #1 or #2. Is this an anomaly or just something I have to live with?

I am lost at where to go. My optimization rating is 95% + and rankings are on pages 4+. I would like to know what I should do to increase my rankings.
My site is Glare-Guard.com. My Domain Authority has not moved from 17 in a long time. i have done everything to optimize the different pages. I have 90%+ ratings for the various pages, yet I am still not even close to the first page for many of the keywords I am looking to rank for. Do you have any tips or ideas? Should I try to rewrite my content and add more information? I am just at a loss for where I should go to get the right traffic to my site. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Silo not ranking for main silo page - what can I do?
Hi everyone, I set up a silo for my page http://werkzeug-kasten.com/ . Unfortunately only the silos inner pages rank very good. These are for example http://werkzeug-kasten.com/suchmaschinenoptimierung-seo-freiburg/keyword-analyse/ for "Keywordanalyse SEO Freiburg" <a>http://werkzeug-kasten.com/suchmaschinenoptimierung-seo-freiburg/onpage-seo/</a> for "Onpage SEO Freiburg" ... but the silos main page <a>http://werkzeug-kasten.com/suchmaschinenoptimierung-seo-freiburg/</a> does not rank for "SEO Freiburg". Do you have any idea why that might be? Cheers, Marc

I want my website to rank on the first page for a very competitive keyword
I am a WordPress designer and can service national clients. I want to rank on the first page for the keyword WordPress designer. This is a highly competitive keyword MOZ gives it a 68% difficulty. I rank locally in nj for WordPress designer nj and a multitude of local WordPress based key words. I rank on page 10 of serps doing a private browsing session. Some of my national competitors rank on the first page with not many links in. How could i be so low on the serps for the base keyword WordPress Designer but for local WordPress designer nj be number 1 everytime? What should be my best plan of attack if i want to Rank much higher for this one specific keyword hopefully page 1. I think this one keyword could increase business greatly so it is a top priority for me. I appreciate all advice 🙂

Automated Quality Content Acceptable Even Though Looks Similar Across Pages
I have some advanced statistics modules implemented on my website, which is very high level added value for users. However, wording is similar across 1000+ pages, with difference being the statistical findings.

Page Ex 1: http://www.honoluluhi5.com/oahu/honolulu-condos/
Page Ex: 2: http://www.honoluluhi5.com/oahu/honolulu/metro/waikiki-condos/ As you can see same wording is used "Median Sales Price per Year", "$ Volume of Active Listings" etc etc....difference being the findings / results are obviously different. Questions: are search engines smart enough to realize the quality in this or do they see similar wording across 1000+ pages and p-otentially consider the pages low-quality content, because search engines are unable to identify the high level added value and complexity in pulling such quality data? If that may be the case, does that mean I ought to make the pages more "unique" by including a little piece of writing about each page to make them look more unique, even though it is not of value to users?0 -
15 Keywords but only 8 visible on the page?
Hi we launched our site in June this year built using DNN - I have just used Moz's On page Grader for several pages and whilst it shows the KW in the URL, Titles, Meta Description, ALt Tag, it also says that I have 15 KWs in the body of this particular page and yet when i eye ball the page it only shows 8. Is this because of the templated navigation of the site. ie this KW also shows in the nav structure of other pages that are listed in the left hand nav menu? If this is correct will Google think that I am stuffing my page with too many KWs? Any solutions? Thanks Ash

Local Search Results Tanked My 1st Page Ranking
My site was routinely ranking in the top 2-3 in Google for my relevant search terms. Then I started working on my local SEO. Now I'm in the map list at 1-2, but my site no longer shows up with the rest of the search results. I've heard that this has been happening to other local businesses with a big Google presence. I'm thinking that I should create some micro sites for each location listing that gives a location specific intro and then links to my main site. Then I can sever my main site from Google places. Here are my two questions: 1) Is this going to kill my placement in the map results; and, How long will it take for my main site to get back to its 2-3 spot rankings in Google's regular results?
