Nofollow links to resources used to save bandwidth?
-
I have a site on volusion, www.ecowindchimes.com. Until recently I was doing fairly well (top 3 for keyword(s) for 6 years) in serps. I was hit by the an update around july of last year, and did a full page redesign in november. My site has been losing ranking for its main keyword "wind chimes".
One change I noticed is that no-follow was removed (when the designers added a lightbox popup for the sound) from the many many links I have for my sound files of the wind chimes (I house them on a separate server to save bandwidth, which is expensive at volusion). The webaddress the sound-files are on doesn't even have a page... it is just there for the files. (there are ~100 files linked to on almost every page of the site where a product listing shows).Should I go through and no-follow all of these links again? Is that hurting me?
I suspect it is, but it is a lot of work for nothing if that is not the problem. -
Are you using a CNAME of your main domain for that server? Like sounds.example.com? You should, if you aren't. I don't think pagerank can flow to a sound file. But I am not entirely sure, tho.

Will Google still treat them the same if they are on another domain... even on another server. Does Google know they are mine if they are on different domain/server? I was concerned that I will sending out link juice on every page of my site with these.

Those sounds are yours, therefore you don't need them to rank in SERPs as long as your Website ranks. Anyway, Google does not display "sound results" so I don't think following or nofollowing those links will do much difference, I don't think that is the problem why you could be loosing your rankings.

Is it still necessary to have a "home" page button/link in the top nav?
Or is it not necessary to have a "home" tab/link because everybody by this time knows you can get to the home page by clicking on the logo?

Pin It Button, Too Many Links, & a Javascript question...
One of the sites I work for has some massive on-page link problems. We've been trying to come up with workarounds to lower the amount of links without making drastic changes to the page design and trying to stay within SEO best practices. We had originally considered the NoFollow route a few months back but that's not viable. We changed around some image and text links so they were wrapped together as one link instead of being two links to the same place. We're currently running tests on some pages to see how else to handle the issue. What has me stumped now though is that the damned Pinterest Pin Button counts as an external link and we've added it to every image in our galleries. Originally we found that having a single Pin It button on a page was pulling incorrect images and not listing every possible image on the page... so to make sure that a visitor can pin the exact picture they want, we added the button to everything. We've been seeing a huge uptick in Pinterest traffic so we're definitely happy with that and don't want to get rid of the button. But if we have 300 pictures (which are all links) on a page with Pin It buttons (yet more links) we then have 600+ links on the page. Here's an example page: http://www.fauxpanels.com/portfolio-regency.php When talking with one of my coders, he suggested some form of javascript might be capable of making the button into an event instead of a link and that could be a way to keep the Pin It button while lowering on-page links. I'm honestly not sure how that would work, whether Google would still count it as a link, or whether that is some form of blackhat cloaking technique we should be wary of. Do any of you have experience with similar issues/tactics that you could help me with here? Thanks. TL;DR Too many on page links. Coder suggests javascript "alchemy" to turn lead into gold button links into events. Would this lower links? Or is it bad? Form of Cloaking?

Best strategy for multiple internal links
We have a website that has a whole heap of internal links. After re-structuring the footer links to the main categories we are now looking at the best way to display the internal links from each category (approx 20-50 links from each). At present they are simply listed on the corresponding category page, however this doesnt look great so we want to display them in a way that is user friendly and also seo friendly. Any suggestions and examples appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Using More Info javascript:toggleDisplay tag for More info text
Is there any harm in using javascript so a user can "toggle" open or closed additional text on a website? For example, if a user wants to read more about something, they can click on "More Info" and the text would then appear. Google is able to read the text, because I chose a random 8 word section of the text within the More Info and pasted it into a Google Search and the website showed up in search results. Just wondering if using this technique would have any negative impact. Here's what the code would look like:

<a <span="">title</a><a <span="">="Show Tables" href="</a><a class=" " target="_blank">javascript:toggleDisplay('table1')</a>">More Info style="display: none;" id="table1"> this is where the text would be, and from this section was where I grabbed text to search with in google. Then in the footer, here is the script needed so the more info will work: I am by no means an expert in coding/html/javascript. Thanks!0 -
Using a lightbox
Using a lightbox type thing for our new website (you click on an image and then get a bigger version of image). Is there any best practices SEO wise for this and any no no's I should be aware of? It's all hard coded so not going the normal way via wordpress of using thumbnails then the larger original image as you click on the thumbnail, using two separate images- this sound to you guys?

Is there any difference in using an underscore vs. a dash in the directory portion of the url?
A friend who is a software developer asked this question regarding the directory portion of the url: Is it better to use dashes or underscores? I know in the domain name Matt Cutts recommends dashes, but what about the directory extension?
