Moving off page blog to on page blog
-
Hi,
I was using free wordpress blog and i have around 18-20 content on the blog. Now, we've managed to have blog on our main website which has www.mysite.com/blog extension. We did this so we could create more links on the website/
I am a little unsure how to move the blog now. Should we copy & paste the blog articles from old blog to new one and remove them from old blog? I am just not quite sure how would it effect the links.
If i keep the old articles on the old blog and create new articles for the new one, it'll take me a while before i get them written.
Any recommendation appreciated.
Thanks

Just to make sure you know, Sida - it's possible to migrate a WordPress.com blog to a self-hosted one (like www.mysite.com/blog) and still keep most of the ranking/influence/linkjuice of the original blog flowing to the new site.
It's relatively straightforward to do. The benefit is, you get the best of both worlds - everyone going to the old site gets automatically redirected to the new site, so no concerns about duplicate content, and the ranking value gets passed to the new blog.
This means the new site will have all the old site's content, so it won't look "sparse" at the beginning. It also means all the traffic going to the old site will automatically land on the equivalent page of the new site, so the new blog will immediately have traffic. And as I said, almost all the ranking value of the old site will be moved to the new site as well.
The key requirement to accomplish this is, you MUST buy the Offsite Redirect service from WordPress.com which is what will redirect visitors and linkjuice to the new location. It's only $13/yr last time I checked. (1 yr is often enough)
There are many tutorials on the web for how to do this. Here's a good tutorial from wpbeginners.com and there's a version with a video on Mashable's site. (Iin your case a couple of adjustments will be necessary as you'll be transferring to your blog in a subfolder, not at the root of your site)
In my opinion, if you've got some good incoming links to your existing content on the WordPress.com site, it would be well worth the hour or two necessary to properly migrate it to your new main site blog.
Something to think about?

Hi Tom/John,
Thank you for your time and insightful points.
I've just check the back links that comes to old blog and i have quite few of them and it don't think it will be easy to update them and i do get link juice from the old blog. It may not be good idea to move from old one to new one then.
In this case, it 's better to create a new blog from scratch. One thing that I wasn't happy to do is to sent users to a blog where there are only a few articles. I've just thought that i can create a banner letting users know that the previous entries are available on old blog. I think this will prevent us look we are very new in the business
Thank you again!

If you are getting some link juice form the blog, I wouldn't take it down, not in the short term for sure
Can you not start the new blog from a blank canvas, I appreciate you have 18 entries in your current blog, but in the greater scheme its not that much.
You could of course create new similar articles within your new blog, and then eventually redirect your old blog to the new one, that way you retain most of your link juice.
Defiantly do not copy the text ,even if you are taking the pages of the first blog down, just because you remove something from a web server, it does not mean the page is still not indexed, it might be a while before the robots come looking again.
Really I would suggest create the new blog and start from their, as you add similar posts to the new blog as is on the old one, redirect the old post to the new blog.
If you feel you are getting no benefit from the old blog, of course you can reomve it, but I would'nt just copy and past the data to the new blog until you knew it was unindexed, you could use copyscape to verify within a few days because even requesting Google to unindex can take weeks to happen
Regards
John

Hey there
Let's run through the two options and look at the pros and cons of each:
Moving content from old blog to new blog - if you do this, the first thing you'll want to do is remove the old content from the old blog, as you mentioned. This is to remove any chance of a duplicate content penalty.
Now, the links to your site from your old blog (plus any links to those blog posts) will be lost. You will know better than anyone if those links are high value or if they are nice authoritative links. You'd be losing those links in this method, but even if they were high quality I would be tempted to use this method anyway.
By having the blog content directly on your root domain, there's nothing stopping from high authority websites linking to those posts in the future, particularly if the content is timeless. That means you'd be getting the benefit of those links directly to your site.
As a contingency, if you find any links pointing to your old blog and would like to keep them, reaching out to the webmaster who owns the site is a good idea. I'm sure they'd be keen on not sending their own users to a 404 page as it makes them look bad. Tell them you've updated the URL and you can keep the link.
As for the other option - keeping the old blog and starting fresh with the new one. This will make your new blog appear sparse at first, which isn't that bad of a thing and certainly not from an SEO perspective. You'd be keeping the links from the old blog to your site in this sense, but the only problem is that if people want to link to your old blog posts, you're not getting the direct benefit of that to your new domain. The strength of that link will be diluted somewhat.
On a personal note, I always prefer keeping your content on your main site for contingency reasons anyway. I want my site, or whichever site I'm working on, to be the number 1 stop for users looking for information, resources, tools, advice etc. For that reason, I'd go with option one and take the necessary steps outlined above.
Hope this helps.

Unique pages per search phrase, Yes or No?
Hi People What is the general consensus regarding having bespoke pages for several search phrases? Should you have an individual page on your site for each main key phrase you want to target or should you target several phrases for each page e.g. Target 3 phrases per page. And if having separate pages for key phrase should there be links on site to these pages or is it enough just to have them in a site map? Thanks Andy

Build links to home page or internal to rank internal pages?
I understand that naturally people link to the home page and internal pages - probably the home page more often than not. In order to build a natural looking link profile I also understand that I need a variety of anchor text, brand and url links. Should I be building links mainly to the home page with only a few to internal pages? Ultimately I want my internal pages to rank for specific terms so in my head it makes sense to concentrate my link building effort to internal pages but that would seem unnatural to google I'm sure. For arguments sake if I only built links to the home page with a mix of the anchor texts described above would these internal pages rank eventually anyway as 'link juice' flows throughout the site? Or is it an absolute must to build some links to internal pages. Could a page rank for a keyword without having any links to the site with the keyword anchor text (simply url links) based on the page title/content? Also what is a good ratio of home page to internal links? I would assume around 10:1? A lot of questions I know but I'm confused as to what will be the best strategy.

Does the root domain hold more power then an inner page?
Question, Lets say a new domain is launched, the root domain and an inner page target the same term. Google comes along for the first time and indexes the website. Does it see the target term on the homepage as more important then the inner page because you are putting it on the root? I get the feeling terms connected directly with the root domain have a better chance of ranking then the term being on a inner page. Any thoughts on this?

Competitor links on unmaintained pages
hey all, this is my first posting... I have a webpage that is a great resource (ranked 3rd for my keyword) , and unarguably better than the site that is taking the first 2 places. Because my page is a much more useful resource for the same thing I have been looking at who is linking to them and asking them to take a look at mine in the hope that they will replace their link with my more up to date page. The problem is a LOT of the high value links they have (many .edu links) are from old, now unmaintained pages, where I have no chance of getting a link (or even contact with a webmaster) Its frustrating that they have so many good links to such an out of date page. I just wondered if any of you have had a similar situation. It just seems very hard to knock someone off that top spot if they have been established a long time, regardless of the quality of their content. I guess there is no solution to it except to find lot of other high value links myself - so not so much a question as a comment really! but happy to hear peoples own experiences of that sort of situation.

Merging 10 niche pages into 1 large page: how to go about it?
Good day,
Link Building | | rayvensoft
I am new to SEOmoz, so please allow me to take this opportunity to introduce myself before jumping into the questions. I have a small network of sites that focus on language education online. I have been working on them for about 3 years, and they were starting to do well. I am sure I made some mistakes along the way with regards to SEO (I paid for article distribution, and directory submission). I also did link exchanges - mainly with related sites, but some of them were kind of grey . I stayed away from blackhat entirely.
So, like many people I got affected by Google Penguin. Luckily it was not as bad as many of the people I have heard about. 7 out of my 10 sites, stayed on or near the top for the main keywords. They did however drop for some of the secondary keywords. 3 of the sites however got hit hard. Based on this, I have ventured to guess that google is telling me I was doing it about 70% right, and 30% wrong. Well, live and learn.
After April 24th I started to scower the web to find out what happened and to see what to do. In my readings I noticed that a lot of people were affected, but some where not. The one thing I found that most of the people who were affected had in commune was that they were on SEOmoz. So I decided to join. So now I am here to hopefully learn what I did wrong, and what I need to do right. I have no problem at all in starting from scratch and putting in the hard work. Now, as for my question. As I mentioned, not all of my sites were hit by Penguin. More of them survived than got killed. I was hoping to be able to leverage those sites to give the new larger site a kick-start. Just to give you some metric, all 10 sites have a quality rank of between 40-60 according opensiteexplorer. The linking is nothing extreme. The pages have anywhere from 200-1000 links. Nothing more than that. So here are the questions. 1) The SEO I did on all 10 sites were very similar. So I am afraid of just doing a 301 redirect from the 7 other sites in the future google may punish them as well, and as such my main page new page will suffer. What would you guys recommend. Instead of a 301, I could just ad a link to the sub pages on the new site. It would be less effective, but also less risky. What would you all suggest? 2) If I take the 301 option, what is the general recommendation on how to phase it in. I am assuming Google would not like it if all 7 pages got redirected on the same day. That would essentially make the page have 5000 or so links overnight. What is the general recommendation for these kinds of things. one 301 a week? one 301 a month? The 301's would not be to the homepage, they would each go to a relevant sub-section of the site. Sorry for the long first post. My wife tells me I don't know when enough is enough sometimes. 🙂 Thanks in advance for any assistance and I am excited to see what I can learn on SEOmoz.0 -

Tagged pages showing too many links
I'm confused - seo moz crawl shows I have lots of pages with too many links. 150 - 200 or so. I'm not sure how any of my pages can have that many links and they don't appear to to me. Here's an example: http://www.musicliveuk.com/tag/wedding-entertainment They all appear to be 'tag' pages. These pages are blocked by meta robots anyway so is this a problem and how do I fix it? I also am very confused by rel canonical. I have 300 odd pages with this warning. Is this good or bad? Plesae help!
