What happens if I 301 Redirect my homepage to a different page on site
-
If i were to 301 redirect the index page of my website to a page in a different subdirectory of my site would that adversely affect SEO?
Does your home page need to be in the root of your site?
I'm asking because a developer has told me that it would be best to do that since he needs to install OpenCart on the root of our domain...
-
why wouldn't you put in root and why no subdomain?
We aren't planning on doing a subdomain. We're planning on using two different domains with Multistore
-
Not to mention opencart is in Hong Kong which makes reaching for support really fun.
I would definitely not put in the root and would not put on a subdomain, also you need two SSL certs i think, one for each site.
-
Sorry, I meant of course a subdomian as opposed to a sub directory ... In theory I do not see why it would be an issue to create your new store within the subdomain, I can see why in a subdirectory (with OC)
We use a lot of solutions, as web agency we use what fits the clients, I am assuming you are going down the Open Cart cause the platform itself is open source. e-Commerce off the shelf solutions can be quite expensive ,and a lot of the main ones as expensive as they are ,also insist on hosting with them, which is not what you need.
It really depends on what you want for an e-Commerce solution, do you need the big inventory backend, do you need a CMS.
Foxycart is a brilliant e-Commece solution we use as much as possible ,we use Perch as the CMS if the client needs one. Its so flexible from a design perspective ... and although not free ,is very cost effective compared to some solutions
But it really is horses for course, one mans foe is another mans enemy.
Though we have worked with WP and Woo-commerce ,we have one or two clients still using this platform, and to be honest it works great, considering its all open source, granted modules can cost, but its relativity cost effective to some of the more known solutions, and in my opinion WP is a much more stable platform that OC.
But everything I say up above is debatable ,plenty of people use OC and love it (or at at least tolerate it )
Good luck with your project

I've found every shopping cart software I've touched to be a nightmare. What's your preference?
What do you mean by Add on domain?
-
I've worked with OC before, its a nightmare at the best of times, I do know there is some issue with the URL rewrite across mulitstores, well I have read of it at least.
Have you considered an add on domain instead
-
Ok! Yeah I did but he told me that since we are using Multistore across two different domains (not subdomains) that it had to be in the root. It seemed weird to me, I'm trying to figure out if that's the case or not.
-
Seems weird. Tell him to install opencart in a subdirectory like we did here
-
The opencart directory (index.php) wouldn't redirect just our home page which is index.html
-
301 redirects will pass on your link value, so it shouldn't have any impact from an SEO perspective. But if your developer installs OpenCart in your root directory, and the root directory redirects to a subdirectory, won't that cause problems for OpenCart?

A question about title tag when the page has 2 services.
Hi all, Assuming a company has two services: SEO and PPC. Here is the situation: I would like to focus on SEO for now but also don't want to leave my PPC service out of the page. SEO accounts for 60% of the content, while PPC accounts for 40%. Assuming the content (SEO + PPC) of the page will not change, which title tag would you prefer, and why? SEO | brand name (Is it appropriate that the title focus on SEO but the content of the page contains PPC) SEO | PPC | brand name (Will the keywords dilute each other?) SEO | SEM Agency | brand name (The idea behind it is that SEM includes SEO and PPC so I think Google would be OK with the page ranking for SEO and also including PPC in the content. I really appreciate your help and explanation. Thank you!

Ecommerce site in Europe
A client is looking to expand their ecommerce business into Europe. They have already purchased a number of European brand domain names and want to start their expansion in Ireland. Is it better to have a single website with pages translated for each language or a seperate site for each domain/country? With Ireland the only obvious difference is the currency, language shouldn't be an issue. But if we choose seperate sites for each domain/country will having the same product content/descriptions especially in the case of Ireland be an issue? Thanks in advance

Manufacturer, New Direct-to-Consumer Site (Separate Site, or Sub-Domain?)
Hi All! Working with an established manufacturer, been around for many years, it's an internationally known brand, and their products are sold by thousands on distributors. They recently started a new website (separate from their old established B2B manufacturer site) which will be used to sell direct to customer. The new site is great, with a nice responsive design, clean look, flexible, etc. The problem is, it's a new site with low Domain Authority. The manufacturer's B2B site has been around a while, very high Domain Authority. So, I'd like to be able to harness all the link equity they've build instead of trying to optimize a brand new site. The problem with this old established site is that it IS in fact old. The design is terrible, it's not responsive, old code, bad look and feel, etc. We could incorporate the new B2C site (which has its own CMS) into a sub-domain, like store.site.com. But, I'd worry that site.com's crapiness will limit growth potential for the new pages at store.site.com. Same issue were we to add the new site into a sub-folder, like site.com/store/. On the other side, we could just keep the new site, with it's own domain, sitestore.com, and have product pages and/or category pages from the manufacturer's B2B site link to the relevant pages on the new B2C site. Thanks!

Site Speed for Magento Site
We have our site all ready for test users but the site speed is painfully slow. Our developers are a bit stymied about what to do. Is anyone a site speed expert or know of anyone good that can evaluate our site and tell us what's going wrong? Thanks!

Best Practices for home page design for ecommerce website
I know this question is not directly related to SEO, but I figured I have been getting some good help from this forum, so why not? The website is www.vrtack.com. I am looking to redesign the home page. It is an ecommerce website selling equestrian clothing and leather goods. My goals are: 1. Reduce the very high bounce rate and drop-off rate. 2. Fine tune the relevancy of the website towards a handful of keyword phrases. 3. Engage the visitor to create better click-through and to increase the average time spent on the page/site. 4. Page Loading time is of importance. It has to load quickly. I would love to hear some specific suggestions, examples, best practices.

Custom 404 Page Indexing
Hi - We created a custom 404 page based on SEOMoz recommendations. But.... the page seems to be receiving traffic via organic search. Does it make more sense to set this page as "noindex" by its metatag?

Suggestions For My Ecommerce Site
I am starting to work on an ecommerce site that I am part owner of. My partner who is the other owner started the site a while back and because he has no internet marketing experience the site didn't come out very well. I am currently overhauling the site and here is a list of things first on my list so I can at least get started on some seo and even ppc. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at our store and see if you think I am missing anything or you could suggest anything else that really should be done immediately or something that is wrong. The site is www.clubfitnesswarehouse.com Update magento to newest version Fix url structure to be SEO friendly for homepage, category pages, product pages etc. For an example of a site that has great seo friendly urls please refer to examples on http://www.bigfitness.com/ site. For example these pages. http://www.bigfitness.com/treadmillstore.html , http://www.bigfitness.com/bosplincy.html , Remove top navigation menu and instead create left sidebar navigation menu created to navigate site and products. For example of these types of sidebars please refer to sidebar on http://www.bigfitness.com/ or http://www.americanfitness.net/ We will NOT be using same structure as what is in top navigation currently. Categories and keywords of categories will be changed and some will stay the same structure as is currently in navigation For header we would like to feature our shipping policy, returns, privacy policy, no sales tax etc. For example I have seen that I like refer to http://www.spiderofficechairs.com/ Obviously we do not want to copy but something similar for our own site. All images on homepage must be changed to include clickable txt so google can read text not just pictures. We would also like product pages modified to make more user friendly and conversion increased. Add to cart button needs to be changed, text needs to be brighter instead of dull grey color. Add to cart button must also be moved ABOVE THE FOLD! Also on product pages we would like to add sections in addition to Product Description, of Specs, and About section for each product page. We also need the ability to change this information as needed when we need to.
