Moving content to a clean URL
-
Greetings
My site was seriously punished in the recent penguin update. I foolishly got some bad out sourced spammy links built and I am now paying for it
I am now thinking it best to start fresh on a new url, but I am wondering if I can use the content from the flagged site on the new url.
Would this be flagged as duplicate content, even if i took the old site down?
your help is greatly appreciated
Silas

Thanks nathan
yes I kinda doubt the disavow tool is of much use, hence why I am now looking at moving to a new url

Well after reading some other Q&A posts I made the discovery that the disavow tool doesn't permanently remove the link.
Others have suggested going through the effort or physically removing the link.
I found this article on backlink

Hi Nathan
thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately I already used the disavow tool a few months back when I realized what happened to my site. I was starting to rank up again then the new penguin update came along a buried me.
So you dont think I would be punished for duplicate content if I used my content on a new url after taking down the old site?
many thanks!

Hi Silas,
While moving content would probably solve your problem, a cheaper option would be to use the "disavow links" tools from Google. This is to be used if you know what links are causing the problem. I have not had to deal with this problem yet myself but from my reading i believe this may solve your problem as well as prevent you from any potential problem from creating a new url, the hassle of re-branding that url and just having to figure out a good new one!
Just simply Google "disavow tool" and it should be the first result. It will take you to your webmaster tools page but i'm not sure how to find it without doing a search.

Does ID's in URL is good for SEO? Will SEO Submissions sites allow such urls submissions?
Example url: http://public.beta.travelyaari.com/vrl-travels-13555-online It's our sites beta URL, We are going to implement it for our site. After implementation, it will be live on travelyaari.com like this - "https://www.travelyaari.com/vrl-travels-13555-online". We have added the keywords etc in the URL "VRL Travels". But the problems is, there are multiple VRL travels available, so we made it unique with a unique id in URL - "13555". So that we can exactly get to know which VRL Travels and it is also a solution for url duplication. Also from users / SEO point of view, the url has readable texts/keywords - "vrl travels online". Can some Moz experts suggest me whether it will affect SEO performance in any manner? SEO Submissions sites will accept this URL? Meanwhile, I had tried submitting this URL to Reddit etc. It got accepted.

Hi, SEO wizards! My company has a company blog on Medium (https://blog.scratchmm.com/). Recently, we decided to move it to our own site to drive more traffic to our domain (https://scratchmm.com/blog/). We re-published all Medium blogs to our own website. If we keep the Medium blog posts, will this be considered duplicate content and will our website rankings we affected in any way? Thank you!

Content Regurgitators
Hey, There are few websites such as http://bestthenews.com/ which regularly copy and paste articles from one of our sites onto theirs - along with all the links back to our site. The sites don't have a high spam score - but I cant imagine these sites serve any purpose (ie genuine readership) other than trying to boost their traffic. At the moment we haven't done anything about these, as they are backlinks after all - but could these sites have a negative impact and should we be asking them to remove? We have even had our content copied and pasted by AGDA (Australian Graphic Design Association) - which is OK as the site has great authority so the links are good, however it's still strange that a large reputable organization would just copy and paste articles without notifying us. Curious to here other experience / opinions on the matter. Cheers!

What tools do you use to find scraped content?
This hasn’t been an issue for our company so far, but I like to be proactive. What tools do you use to find sites that may have scraped your content? Looking forward to your suggestions. Vic

Duplicate content or not? If you're using abstracts from external sources you link to
I was wondering if a page (a blog post, for example) that offers links to external web pages along with abstracts from these pages would be considered duplicate content page and therefore penalized by Google. For example, I have a page that has very little original content (just two or three sentences that summarize or sometimes frame the topic) followed by five references to different external sources. Each reference contains a title, which is a link, and a short abstract, which basically is the first few sentences copied from the page it links to. So, except from a few sentences in the beginning everything is copied from other pages. Such a page would be very helpful for people interested in the topic as the sources it links to had been analyzed before, handpicked and were placed there to enhance user experience. But will this format be considered duplicate or near-duplicate content?

IP-Based Content on Homepage?
We're looking to redesign one of our niche business directory websites and we'd like to place local content on the homepage catered to the user based on IP. For instance, someone from Los Angeles would see local business recommendations in their area. Pretty much a majority of the page would be this kind of content. Is this considered cloaking or in any way a bad idea for SEO? Here are some examples of what we're thinking: http://www.yellowbook.com http://www.yellowpages.com/ I've seen some sites redirect to a local version of the page, but I'm a little worried Google will index us with localized content and the homepage would not rank for any worthwhile keywords. What's the best way to handle this? Thanks.
