Wordpress Designer - Have you heard of Jay Hafling?
-
We are currently browsing around to have a new site built for us as we are not happy with the current one. I checked out webdevstudio and it looks like they build quality sites, but they told me they aren't taking on small projects like mine currently. So browsing around I found this designer from the Ukraine with a nice site and nice portfolio. I am wondering if anyone has worked with him, and maybe to get some opinions on his work? I don't want to make the wrong choice here..
What do you guys think?

This is probably the best advice you will get, because, everyone has a bias answer about who is the best at something. SEOMOZ has a great list, sure there are many not on their, but take a look at that and you may find one you really like.
Do the following
1. Scroll to the bottom of your page.
2. Click Recommended Companies
3. Click web design and choose for yourself.

Think about how many people develop Genesis framework it's not a theme it's a framework that a theme would run on.
Regardless of what Jay tells you you're site will be called a theme that's what they're called when they are built.
I would choose a framework that web dev studios uses as their primary framework please feel free to check it out
along with other notables like Yoast someone who gets in the millions for traffic every month. Genesis is a better way to build a new WordPress site that is of course my opinion and the opinion of web dev studios along with Yoast
what is Web to say where the ones that literally wrote the book on WordPress development and that's because they have. Why would they build their expensive websites off of such a terrible framework who was not in their best interest? Why would somebody so well known in the WordPress community as Yoast use Genesis if it is a hindrance or in any way shape or form hurts the robustness of the site.
I can't look into the future but I can tell you this rather it's built from core or Genesis the site will be constantly updated through Genesis make it more secure than core that's the truth.
The simple fact is for many projects using a framework and the best framework in my opinion and in the people who wrote the book is Genesis
you don't lose anything at all have them explain to you what you lose by using the framework?
I would also agree with them there are many designers that can do fantastic things. That's not in dispute.
I will get you a portfolio link I apologize it was not in what I had given you however take a look over comments as far as the developer I believe there are other developers there that are quite impressed with Genesis 2.0 and his ability to master it before others.
Here is the 1st working website in the portfolio I found. When Jay said website speak for itself
here is one of his websites and the first one I could access.
I would keep everything in the United States that would be my preference however it's up to you.
Sincerely,
Thomas
PS
Jays work

Thanks I will take a look at them as well. So you wouldn't recommend a page being developed without using a theme?
-
Thanks for all the information. Is there a reason to be using Genesis -vs- not using a theme at all? This designer Jay Hafling doesn't use any themes and develops the site from scratch. Is this good or bad?
I took a look at Greg Reindels site but there isnt much to make a decision on from his website.

Demetrios,
there are no shortage of great wordpress designers and developers. Make sure your website is built on a responsive framework, this will ensure cross device compatibility
I know a great one based out of the UK http://www.ukwebcreations.co.uk/
I think their website says it all

Hi,
Unfortunately, I've never heard of the person you talking about. However, I do know of webdevstudios they do fantastic work. I wish I could give you more regarding the exact designer you are talking about however if you want a reference to a designer that works with Genesis primarily however can build any type of site needed. I would strongly recommend Greg Reindel http://www.gregreindel.com/articles/ one of the things that I am extremely impressed with that he is doing is building on the new HTML 5 Genesis platform the ability to take what I think is the best framework for WordPress and web dev studios uses the most as well which is Genesis and have the knowledge and capability he has for what I consider the best framework out there the HTML 5 Genesis 2 platform which is extremely new however if you look at this article you will be able to see he knows it so well that he is an extremely talented developer. He is also located in the United States Texas and in my past I can tell you that I've had negative experiences dealing with web designers outside of the United States simply because if something goes wrong there is no remedy legally however if you work with the designer inside the United States there's always a mutual respect for the law. I'm telling you because I was shorthanded by a Pakistani web development group and was left with absolutely no alternative, but to deal with what I was given. If it had been a web design firm in the United States I would've had legal options.
I would strongly recommend you have your site built from HTML 5 as it has so many benefits you can check that out by going to Yoast.com and read some of his articles about turning his Genesis site into a Genesis 2.0 HTML 5 site.
Here's the article http://www.gregreindel.com/genesis-html5-child-starter-theme/
Here's Yoast talking about using HTML 5 along with Genesis 2.0
http://yoast.com/schema-org-genesis-2-0/
The benefits of having a properly built HTML 5 website are huge and if you're looking at web dev studios I know you're looking at WordPress.
I hope I've been of help to you,
Thomas

In Wordpress getting marked as duplicate content for tags
Moz is marking 11 high priority items for duplicate content. Just switched to wordpress and publishing articles for the site but only have a few. The problem is on the tag pages. Since there aren't very many articles so when you go to the tag pages it lists one or two articles and hence there are pages with duplicate content. Most of the articles have the same tags / categories. Perhaps I'm using too many tags and categories? I'm using about 7 tags and around 2 categories for each post / event. I've read the solution is using canonical tags but a little confused on which page I should use for the tag and then I believe I need to point the duplicate pages to the correct page. For example, I have two events that are for dances and both have the same tags. So when you visit, site.com/tags/dance or site.com/events both pages have the same articles listed. Which page do I select as having the original content? Does it matter? Does that make sense? Someone was also saying I could use the Yoast plugin to fix, but not really seeing anything in the Yoast tools. I also see 301 redirects mentioned as a solution but the tag pages will be changing as we add new articles and they have a purpose so not really seeing that as a solution.

Migrate from HTML to Wordpress?
My website is currently HTML because in the past, I liked a more hands-on approach and liked to have a high level of control over my code. My organic search rankings are very good. I do have a blog on wordpress now. Despite all of this, I am considering moving to Word Press. The reason is that the fancier website techniques are very easy to achieve with a wordpress theme or plug-in. And some changes, such as menu, can be done at the high level versus the entire site. Auto-responsive is built within the themes, so anytime a new device comes out, they update it so I don't have to. And, I would like to be more tightly integrated with my blog. I am also getting to the points that I have no time to code and would like something a little simpler to maintain. BUT, I am scared to make the move and then completely lose my organic rankings. I know that I will have to 301 all of the pages. And I know that I will have to maintain all my current on-page SEO by paying close attention to the headers and whatnot. Do you all think that it is worth making the switch? Is there a good chance my organic rankings will drop?

Does anyone know of an easy way to create jump links in WordPress without having to hardcode it into the HTML?
I am using Genesis Framework with the New Pro child theme on my site called Learn Internet Grow and when I create long articles I like to have a menu so readers can jump to a specific section. I wonder if there is a best practice for how to create jump links quickly without having to switch between the code editor and the post editor. There are a bunch of plugins but I am wary of adding more. Maybe if someone can tell me about one they had a good experience with. Ideally, a resource that shows you how to create a custom plugin for this or a non-plugin way to alter the framework to enable easy jump linking.

Are wordpress themes like from themeforest bad?
Hi to all. Ok so as I read around the internet I see a lot of people who dislike theme forest and using their themes. I have a them from them, the Avada theme. Ok so they have made a TON of money. But would so many people buy the theme if it was that bad? Going forward, my question is, are wordpress themes a bad thing to do? I feel like its peer pressure to switch to a framework like Genesis. There are so many people who state that a framework and child theme is the way to go. But I am using this avada theme and having under 2.5 sec load times. A lot of people say the code is bloated and is horrible. I understand this and got a cache plugin that makes a huge difference. But I do want to learn and I do want to approach websites in a positive way. So if you have any thoughts on themes, please tell me your thoughts. I am no developer, so they seem to work, but is it at a price? Like bad seo and serps? Thank you chris

Responsive design and Google analytics mobile tracking codes?
Hi all, We are currently rebuilding a site using responsive design, however i have just had a thought. On another site where we have a mobile site under a sub-directory we utilise mobile tracking codes as we found that this was far more accurate for recording visits. On a responsive design site evidently all pages, desktop and mobile, will be under the same URL, yet the content will adjust to the screen size of the device. Should we also change the tracking code to be mobile code on the lower resolutions or would the same code be sufficient?

Wordpress drop down menu issue...
While I am tweaking my current site with getting rid of my footer links, my site will not allow a drop down menu for my service area parent page. It will do a drop down menu for any other tab. Could not find anything in a google search besides just link to parent for drop down... Any ideas?
