How can a small business compete with a larger business?
-
I work for a web and graphic design company. We're not a huge shop but we do fairly well. We're starting to dig into SEO, especially for ourselves. Our biggest problem is our backlinks and competition. We need to be able to rank for keywords like "web design boston" and "graphic design boston". Yet our competition has those locked down and only because of their backlinks. Normally I would say well okay lets look at what they're doing and do it better. The problem is most of their backlinks come from their clients websites that they themselves have designed and put a link on the footer of each page. We do that too but because we're smaller we don't have anywhere near as many clients as they do.
I know I can try and rank for more "niche" keywords. But I want to know in all honesty what my options are for these same keywords. What realistic methods can I use to achieve the same kind of rankings they are?

How much of webdesigners business is from people seeing them linked on a website they made I don’t know. If you know then you might be able to decide if my following advice is useful.
Find a website with poor design that has been around since the internet was born, has good backlinks, a load of traffic, and offer to make them a website free of charge and get yourself on their footer.
Maybe a silly idea, if I missed something I wouldn’t know. One site like this I am looking at with really amateur design has 96,724 per month SE traffic for google US according to SEM rush. Often sites like this use ads to make a bit of money, so that might make them more likely to say “yes” if it increases direct and referral traffic, and ad revenue.

Sitewide footer links are not valued that highly by Google, so your competitor may not be as strong as you think. If you can get links within the content of a post or the about pages of your clients, that may carry more weight than a sitewide footer.
If you are looking for link building ideas, here is a good list:

Link building isn't about money, although money can help. It's about being creative, standing out from the crowd, and doing the outreach necessary to get people to link to you.

Hey Steve
You state that your biggest problem is backlinks but that probably is not what you want here. Search results are becoming ever more localised so if you are based in Boston and target Boston customers you will be able to gain more visibility by focusing on local SEO strategies and the GetListed.org site is as good a place as any to start.
I am in the UK but we are seeing more and more 7 packs of local results above the organic results for localised search queries and for specific service based queries (plumber, web design) where the user is in the location they are looking for.
If we search for graphic design boston or web design boston I am seeing some localised results and yelp listings but if I search for "graphic design in boston" and "web design in boston" then there are even more so.
This is what i would do.
1. Survey the landscape - search for your key terms: web design, website designer, graphic design, graphic designer + then localise them and then localise them including 'in'. Look for localised results in the organic listings and look for results pulled from Google maps. Make yourself a little spreadsheet and keep note of localised results and 7 packs.
2. Ensure your pages targeting graphic design and web design are localised and have the location you are targeting in the page title.
Graphic Design Company in Boston - YourBrand.com
Web Design Company in Boston - YourBrand.com3. Look at Local SEO and make sure you have that sown up.
- Ensure your name, address and phone number is standardised (NAP)
- Optimise your site and use schema markup on the contact page
- Add your NAP to the footer of every page
- Start looking at building high quality citations
- Optimise your Google+ Local listing (fill it in)
- Start building reviews and create a review policy
- Try to build co occurrence of your keywords in your citations
- Get creative with your citations and make sure the big social platforms are utilised (get your address in your Facebook about us section, get your city, postcode and phone number in your twitter bio etc).
- Try to build some local links from important Boston sites and directories
- Look at industry vertical directories
- review top competitor citations and get them yourself
There is plenty of info out there about Local SEO and https://getlisted.org/ is a good starting point. In my experience, most companies that do link building are lazy when it comes to local so the door really is wide open. You need a policy to build reviews and gradually add citations but there are plenty of

Steve - I did some quick searches and most of the top 7 from the local results have no Google+ reviews which is likely a good sign that this is not mega competative and with a bit of work you can easily compete. This is real small business SEO that we do every day at BowlerHat.co.uk for UK folks and there is some serious David and Goliath fun to be had here.
Hope this helps!

You can actually use the competitor ranking to your advantage. By forcing you to focus on more long tail keywords further down the purchase cycle, you can actually end up generating better leads than focusing on those broad keywords such as "web design boston." Find the niche you can fit into and exploit it.

Have you tried any paid search traffic? That could have you ranking #1 by the end of the day. If you know of some niche keywords you think would work well for you, you might try some paid search out first and see if the traffic converts well before embarking on an SEO campaign to rank for those terms.

Most of those backlinks are probably not that valuable (especially if they are not contextual relevant and/or non-authoritative).
The bests solution is to create unique, compelling and valuable content for you visitors and to use as link-bait. Do your keyword research and focus on kw/topics that will give you an opportunity for rankings They obviously have a start on you, so it's going to be difficult.

Does sharing same Business Name affect Google ranking?
Hey guys, We have been working for a client who is offering graphic design work almost 2 months. It is a new business and let's say the business name is ABC Graphic Design. So far all the pages are indexed, we built natural links through local directories, blog postings on relevant niche blogs and social media. We optimised the content and meta tags like we always do. However, none of the target keywords appear on the first 10 pages. This is quite odd considering we had a client who was doing the same business and we managed to show some progress in the first 2 months. We did some research and noticed that there are 2 ABC design websites with similar domain names and offering same services. They have nothing to do with my client and they are located in overseas. When i search ABC Graphic Design, the results show other companies instead of my client. My question is whether having a similar business name would affect the ranking. Obviously the other 2 websites have longer history and better ranking. Any suggestions?

Merging two sites to one Rel Can Question
Hi All, We have 2 brands (1 main 1 product as a satellite domain) that we're merging into our main brand. When doing a 301 redirect - should we redirect everypage of the product satellite to the new site or is 1 main redirect fine? I'm Confusing ....yep. Ill do an E.G www.nike.com & www.air-jordan.com we are now shutting down www.airjordan.com and will be migrating all the content to www.nike.com/air-jordan Just of course there will be other pages like air-jordan.com/order-now . Should i do a rel can from air-jordan.com/order-now to www.nike.com/air-jordan/order-now ? Or is simply a 301 from www.airjordan.com to www.nike.com/air-jordan sufficient? Cheers!

What other SEO strategies and tactics can be accomplished at this point?
The client specializes in home, commercial and restoration cleaning services and offers carpet, upholstery, area rug, wood floor, drapery, tile and gout, stone and restoration services such as (water damage, fire damage, mold remediation). This company has over 40 franchises. Carpet cleaning service is their core service that gets them to the customer’s door, then technicians get to up sell on the secondary services (tile, upholstery, stone, wood…) One of the main strategies we have implemented successfully is to be more visible at the local level was a local SEO strategy with every locations having their own unique landing pages for each of the services they would offer ( for instance the san diego location would a customized page for carpet, upholstery and all services they would offer). We have done a great job optimizing each of these locations. Optimization includes on page optimization, unique NAP information, local citations (manual insertions + Yext). We also added local markups and for some of the franchises we added review snippet. Link building around carpet cleaning has been conducted as well through guest posting and in links content. Most of our locations have a google business updated and optimized as well. We are working to get as many reviews as possible but it is still very challenging. In summary basic SEO tactics have been implemented following google’s guideline. Traffic & rankings got us a positive progressive boost in mid 2013(April to August) but in april 2014 the site got hit by manual penalty affecting all carpet cleaning queries only. I was able to cleanup the mess within 2 months luckily but unfortunately we still saw a drop of %40 in traffic (vs 2013) on average in all carpet cleaning pages YoY (april to august). 2015 Q1 traffic has improved by 6% compared to Q1 2014 which is good but still not at the level we were. With the pigeon update and all the high authoritative directories (yelp, angieslist) taking over more and more of the organic real estate in the SERP and increase in competition we have had a hard time getting back to where we were (2013) and we may never get back unless another algorithmic change happens. Another frustrating thing is local competition which has the worst sites as far as UX and content and still outranks us ( such as http://www.carpetcleaninglosangeles.com/). My main goal is to figure out a plan to increase traffic within the carpet cleaning pages and therefore increase conversions. Like it or not rankings for carpet cleaning queries is affecting our CC traffic, so working towards improving them is one way to go even though I shouldn’t focus all my efforts on just rankings. 2015 SEO main activities has been:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Ideas-Money-Art
-local link building= somewhat successful (Seeing some rankings improvements but not consistent across all franchises)
-content marketing projects= quiet successful as far as traffic, branding and link acquisition but not seeing enough ROI
-new web design (launched late 2014)
-google business reviews
-local citations duplicate removal
-weekly blogging ( successful as far as traffic and branding) Things I would like to work on:
-improve Bounce rate within site
-improve CTR by adding review snippets across all franchises
-add industry certification logos to build trust with users and improve conversion
-add before and after pictures of services performed
-site speed (has slowed down compared to the old site) I would love get feedback on what other crucial components(that I am missing) can be done to improve most of these franchises rankings. I am a bit out of ideas as far as what else can be done. Thanks!0 -
Can Google read content/see links on subscription sites?
If an article is published on The Times (for example), can Google by-pass the subscription sign-in to read the content and index the links in the article? Example: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/life/property/overseas/article4245346.ece In the above article there is a link to the resort's website but you can't see this unless you subscribe. I checked the source code of the page with the subscription prompt present and the link isn't there. Is there a way that these sites deal with search engines differently to other user agents to allow the content to be crawled and indexed?

Title tags seem to be going against Rand and suggestions here, what can I do? Can you help me please?
Hi to all, Ok so I have been beating myself up trying to figure out how to create a good ranking title for my websites homepage. My competition uses commas in its title tags But these are 100% against what Rand and many posts say here. I watched his whiteboard where he says don't use commas. There are posts that say, don't use commas. The biggest one is mortonbuildings(dot)com - followed by - lesterbuildings(dot)com They basically have the same title tags with commas. So what's the catch here? What am I missing? of course these sites have Great Domain Authority, but I swear what they are doing is going against what Rand and many other seo professional's are preaching. I thought it should read better for visitors? But to me it looks like keyword stuffing with a brand name? Any help is greatly appreciated to let me know if these commas and strategies are good to do? or bad news? Again thank you for your time to help a small business. Chris

What is the best: one big site or several small ones?
Sometimes I've felt that my choice was incorrect. I know taht with a big amount of content on the same subject a bigger one is better: it’s easier to maintain, and a big number of pages is good for Google ranking, but when you have many small sites, each one focusing on a totally different subject, you can crosslink them and this will improve your rankings. Furthermore, many small sites allow you to focus in specific niches and help you rank better for different keywords. So, what is the best choice?

Anybody know good SEO success stories in the field of small business directories?
We are helping a small business directory in their SEO. They address 20 service categories(300 subcategories) with 60000 profiles. We are focusing on following elements: 1. Cutting the flab (they have 3.4 million pages indexed), but they get only 30000 visitors on the website. This will be done by removing long list of cities & by using "Nofollow". 2. Improve internal navigation & use Anchor texts 3. Focus SEO (Backlinks) at business category pages 4. Clean URLs, Titles 5. Implementation of Rich Snippets (Schema.org) 6. Cleaning data If we can not take traffic volume to 300000 in a month, this project will be considered a failure. Does any directory has achieved this recently? We are in first 2 weeks of the project and It will help us our "To do" list 😉
