How much does a keyword focused domain matter today?
-
Is it still better to choose a keyword focused domain lets say over a branded domain in today's world? How much of a part does that have in the grand scheme of things?
-
Thank you everyone! As with anything there are two sides to ponder.

I think it depends a bit on what your plans are for the site and what kind of competition there is already.
Quite a few niches are still showing EMD or partial matched domains in their results rankings. These are often niches with either relatively little real competition in terms of real brands or else in some of the more shady areas of the search world (Matt Cutts was mentioning payday loans today I think, there is a good example).
If you are hoping for a big splash, get ranked, get rich, get out type thing then why not, an exact match domain might well help in that for the short term. If you are looking to be in business for the long term then you should probably be going the brand building route. If the latter and you can still find an available domain that does not look like what-a-lame-domain.biz that you think you can build a brand around, then.... go for it!

Based on everything I have seen from the direction Google in particular is headed, I would bet on it being less and less of a factor as time goes on as far as search results are concerned. However, that does not negate the benefit that can be achieved from the confidence a person may feel for clicking through to your site.

Hi Erin,
I have a keyword company name and domain name
Here are the pro's based on my experience
- I sign lots of websites in the footer with my company name with anchor text. Keyword link juice
- Many sites give the link in the company name. If you have a keyword in your company name you get the link juice
Con's
- If links go away in the future and co-citation gets big, generic name companies have an uphill battle

You can view Moz's 2011 Search Engine Ranking Factors, there is a proof that a domain that starts with a target keyword has more power than other sites. And, keywords which appears in the subdomain name, also boosts rank.
But keep in mind that the keyword should be relevant and the website should be a quality site.

Do sub-domain visits do not count for website?
It's a common understanding that Google treats sub-domains as different websites. Does that mean visits of sub-domain do not impact website in-terms of ranking or visibility or reputation at Google?

Is this spamming keywords into a url?
My company has previously added on extensions to a url like the example below http://www.test.com/product-name/extra-keywords My question is since there is no difference between the pages http://www.test.com/product-name and http://www.test.com/product-name/extra-keywords and you don't leave the product page to reach the extra-keyword page is this really necessary? I feel like this is probably not a best practice. Thanks for any suggestions.

Traffic drop only affecting google country domains
Hello, I have noticed that our our traffic is down by 15% (last 30 days to the 30 days before it) and I dug deeper to figure out whats going on and I am not sure I understand what is happening. Traffic from google country domains( for example google.com.sa) dropped by 90% on the 18th of September, same applies to other country specific domains. Now my other stats (visits organic keywords, search queries in WMT) seem to be normal and have seem some decrease (~5%) but nothing as drastic as the traffic drop from the google country domains. Is this an https thing that is masking the source of the traffic that came into effect on that date? Is the traffic that is now missing from google country domains being reported from other sources? Can anyone shed some light on what is going on? qk0CS7X

Google webmaster tool content keywords Top URLs
GWT->Optimization->Content Keywords section... If we click on the keyword it will further shows the variants and Top URLs containing those variants. My problem is none of the important pages like product details pages, homepage or category pages are present in that Top URLs list. All the news, guides section url's are listed in the Top URLs section for most important keyword that is also present in my domain name. How to make google realize the important pages for the important keyword?

Are Keywords Dying?
I'm freelancing in SEO work, looking to make it a full time career, and as a result I'm juggling the prospect of having to pick and choose what area I spend most of my time on when working on client sites. My background is in writing so I always lean towards creating content and engaging people via social media. But the standard is also to optimize page titles and - at a deeper level - descriptions for each page. For larger sites, especially e-commerce with many product pages, this is a daunting task. Is it worth it or is the better strategy to focus the limited time available to content creation? Will page titles, etc. eventually become obsolete anyway?

.Co Domains - Any thoughts?
Hi Guys I'm not sure which section this one belongs in as I didn't see a section for domains/tlds. I wanted an opinion on the future of .co domains. We own a gift company (www.xperiencedays.com), as well as a gift recommendation site (www.uniquegifts.net), and invested in a few gift occasion .co domains (www.birthdaygifts.co, christmasgifts.co etc). This was partly because they were cheap and easy to come by, but also with a hope that they soon gain some public recognition. My question therefore is whether anyone within SEOMOZ has an opinion on whether .co will be widely accepted, whether they will (as google claims) be treated as a non-country specific url, and early success stories you know of, and finally whether the recent news from Overstock to rebrand as O.co (http://www.overstock.com/guides/faqs-about-o-co) is the kick start that .co need. I realize that is more than one question
